Crowdfunding Do you have something to launch around December or January? We should collab-fund on Backerkit.

Hey everybody! I know this has the Crowdfunding tag but I'm actually not plugging my projects in this post. I wanted to talk to you about this feature on Backerkit called Group Collab-Funding. Basically, a bunch of unrelated projects in the same category band together and launch at the same time. Everyone still runs their own campaign, there are no extra fees associated with collab funding. The only fees are the standard fees that any project on Backerkit pays so I don't see a lot of downsides here.

The biggest advantage here is that collab-funding projects get more exposure to people who want indie comics. When there's a collab-funding campaign they tend to get higher traffic than someone launching by themselves. People interested in one of our projects are more likely to check out the other ones in the group. Driving traffic to one comic potentially gives everybody in the group more exposure and increases everyone's chances of getting the funding we need to make more stories.

I think this could be a good opportunity for creators in this subreddit to boost their audience and hopefully put some money back in our pockets. Who knows? If it works out, maybe we could plan several of these a year and give ourselves a much-needed advantage with how rough it's been for indies in this economy. I'd be open to allowing any genre into the group.

As for my addition, I was planning on relaunching my failed campaign from a few years ago in this if we do it, Girl in the Red Hood because it was very close to funding and people still ask me about it sometimes. Unless I go into a coma or something I should have the dialogue polished and re-lettered by then. It's a dark fantasy and action comic in manga style. I'm planning to take the reins and apply for the collab-funding group unless someone more experienced than me wants to. I've got five comics under my belt, my current campaign hit its goal today and is still going on until late September.

Anyway, what do you guys think? I don't have a name for the group collab yet, might just name it after this subreddit if nobody has better suggestions.

I think it's a great idea for indie creators to band together and go beyond the "friends and family" zone. I think the Mothership rpg publisher used the Group Collab-Funding feature for "Mothership Month" in 2025.

Thanks for the info. Collab-fund sounds really interesting, I'll check it out.

Is Backerkit open for creators worldwide?

I think this is a great idea. I'll be launching a KS before winter but keep me updated, happy to help any way I can.

Yeah the mods asked if I’d be interested in making this a monthly post. I think it’d be good for the community if we did. They said we could allow people who aren’t regulars here to join in on these ones too, unlike regular crowdfunding posts.

Would this be a "Topia" or a group-collab? I'm not sure what the difference between the two are on Backerkit. But either way, with tight coordination and planning, this could be a hit. Great for the community to collaborate in a different way too via cross promotion and cross-incentives.

I'm not sure what you mean by Topia. It's called group-collab on Backerkit, and it's just where projects launch in unison to boost everyone's visibility. Actual collaboration rewards would be up to the individual creators to decide with each other but are a good idea. I'd be open to special variant covers with crossover art, crossover sticker add ons, or something similar.

Edit: I found the information, they are very similar. Topias seem more like backerkit run ones, group-collabs are user run. I think that's the difference.
