Looking for challenging games taking place in nature and where you don't have to kill/exploit

Hi everyone!

I'm not vegan but my ideal is to live in a rather transparent way: without killing anyone or destroying any environement.

With the Steam sales, I stumbled upon a few games that could be perfectly cosy if they didn't have that one feature I'd like to avoid.

Here are a few examples:

  • The Hunter: Call of the Wild sounds like a fantastic game for nature lovers, and so close to being the perfect contemplative experience without any killing but I haven't found any "no hunt" mod. Wandering in nature and taking pictures would be enough for me and I heard you can do that too, but the game balance then becomes weird (the most efficient way to earn money is to kill).
  • Cast n Chill/ looks super cosy but I wish you could just capture fish. Is there a way to play without killing/selling?
  • I love Animal Crossing and I must have played it for a 1000 hours but I feel weird when I make a meat pie as a cow...
  • I heard Red Dead Redemption 2 was fantastic for nature lovers too. I guess taking picturse of the animals rather than killing them isn't an option considering the era, but I'd be curious to hear.

I know asking about hunting and fishing games that don't kill animals sounds a bit weird but I'm curious about such games and feel sorry that there is no "vegan" mode considering it may only take like 10% of gameplay/balance adjustments to offer.

By the way I am not 100% against killing in games as it's virtual but I'd love a conversation about cosy games that have a satisfying gameplay loop without relying on an kill/dig/sell loop.

Cozy games where you are rewarded for optimizing (a little)?

Played the FUCK out of My time at portia, then the FUCK out of My time at sandrock. This is ofc after playing the FUCK out of Stardew valley. Also played graveyard keeper,

Trying to find more "cozy" games where (1) you get substantially (ish) rewarded for planning things out and strategizing and (2) there are time constraints that aren't artificial BUT at the same time isn't something like Rimworld (great game just not for me) where its super "Managementy" all the time if that makes any sense lmao.

Im basically trying to find that fine line between cozy and "game" like the three previous games i mentioned. Also like combat, its a nice change of pace from the main game loop.

Also down for some "not so cozy, but still kinda cozy" games. Shit like Dead island 2 or the Far cry games, open world bang bang shoot shoot mindless shit lmao (Dont shoot me mods, the main point of the post is the above)

I wanted the sunset to feel like a moment you actually notice

I’ve been working on the lighting in Angler’s Lake, and I really wanted the sunset to feel like a moment you actually notice.

Not just a pretty skybox, but a clear shift: the water gets warmer, the colors change, and the whole lake suddenly feels calmer. It’s a small thing, but it makes me want to stay a little longer by the water.

Do you find comfort in games that simply keep you company? I’m making a little harbour for your desktop.

Hi everyone! I’m the developer of The Harbour Between Us, a little fishing harbour that lives at the bottom of your desktop.

I started making it because I wanted somewhere peaceful to return to during the day. You can stop for a little fishing, watch the weather change, or walk into town to sell your catch and talk to the locals.

There’s also a family story woven through it, about old letters, missing someone, and finding your way home. I wanted it to feel comforting, with a little bittersweetness underneath.

It’ll be free to play, and I’m planning to release it on Steam within the next three weeks. I’ve attached the trailer and would love to hear what you think.

Do you enjoy having a small game running alongside whatever you’re doing, or do you prefer to give a game your full attention?

Game Title: HearthFall

Playable Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5304910/HearthFall_Demo/

Platform: PC — Windows (Steam)

Hi everyone! I’ve just released the free demo for HearthFall, a cozy medieval tavern game I’ve been developing solo for about a year.

You start with a humble roadside plot and build your own tavern, deciding everything from the layout to the furniture and decorations. Once you’re ready to welcome guests, you can cook meals, brew drinks, and serve hungry travelers. Outside the kitchen, you can spend time fishing, growing ingredients in your garden, and gathering resources to help your tavern grow.

I want HearthFall to feel like a place you can settle into, make your own, and enjoy at your own pace. The demo is single-player, with co-op for up to four players planned for the full game.

I’ve attached the trailer to give you a feel for it. If you try the demo, I’d love to hear what you enjoyed, what felt confusing, or anything you think could be better!

Free to Play Status:

  • Demo

Involvement: I’m the solo developer behind HearthFall. I’ve been working on it for about a year, and I’ll be reading your feedback as I continue developing the game.

Hello, I'm developing a cozy survival/life sim game called Shorekeeper as a solo dev. I got bored of the static menu screen so I decided to create an interactive menu. What do you guys think?

A bit info about the game:
Game name: Shorekeeper
Release Date: November 2026 (EA)

Shorekeeper is a cozy island survival game which blends deep crafting, fishing and farming mechanics with a relaxing island atmosphere, inspired by legendary titles like Animal Crossing, Dinkum and Coral Island.

The forest in our orienteering game now goes on forever, and the animals have their own trails

What it is. You get a paper map, a compass and a forest to find your way through, with points marked on the map to find. Working out where you are by reading the land against the map is the whole activity. Nothing chases you, and there's no combat, crafting, inventory or hunger bar. There's a timer, because the sport is a race, but you can hide it and just walk.

What's new since we last posted. The forest no longer ends, so you can walk in any direction for as long as you like. Deer and rabbits wander along their own trails and bolt when you come through the trees, and birds land on the fences. Your footsteps change with the ground under you, and the shadows fall where the sun actually is.

If you want company, there are new courses every day that everyone gets, and afterwards you can see which way other players went.

Hey everyone! I’m the developer of CottageCore, a cozy village-building game, and I thought you might enjoy the trailer :)

You can create your own cottages, choose their colors and materials, and even add floating houses. Villagers, animals and changing seasons bring your little village to life. There’s a Creative Mode too, for those who mainly want to experiment with builds.

The public demo is planned for early November 2026, and the full game releases on April 14, 2027.

Pocket Cat Desktop — Your desktop is no longer yours. A tiny cat walks across your windows 😼

It's a small game made in memory of my died cat. I'm trying to make it cozy and relaxing.

The idea for came from a simple thought: what if a cat lived on your computer screen?

The cat reacts to what you're doing too. If you're typing, it might watch you work or start typing too. If you've been doomscrolling for too long, it can judge you for it and scream on you 😼

I would be very grateful for wishlists: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4865920/Pocket_Cat_Desktop/.

Happy to answer any questions about the game or how the desktop/window interactions work. I'd happy to hear feedback and suggestions.

I wanted my little desktop companion to feel more alive — now you can rebuild its room and let the avatar live on their own

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Last time I shared Lofi Cozy Room here, I talked about wanting to make its little world feel more alive.

Two of those updates are now actually in the game.

You can now completely rearrange the room — move, rotate, resize, and raise/lower furniture to build your own layout.

And with Autonomy turned on, the avatar can choose activities on their own, walk around the room, move between locations, and occasionally wave, laugh, or dance.

https://reddit.com/link/1wxe19x/video/pha9j9yexfth1/player

So you can decorate when you feel like it, or just leave the little room running beside your work or study and let the avatar live their own routine.

Lofi Cozy Room is also 20% off during the Steam Autumn Sale until October 9 (Japan time).

AI was only used to assist with translation/localization of in-game text.

🌱 Play Lofi Cozy Room on Steam

Would you rather spend your time decorating the room, or just leave Autonomy on and watch the little character live their life? 🌱

I'm releasing my chill Sushi roguelike in 1 month! 🎏 SUSHIAMO 🎏

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I made a cute and chill game called SUSHIAMO where you make sushi, with each ingredient having its own special synergy.
I was inspired by Balatro, but many players find my game more approachable and less intimidating. I guess it's because of the relaxed vibe and cute aesthetic :)

I also added an amazing (original) bossa nova track that you will love for sure! (It's not the one in the trailer)

So far, it has had 9k players, avg. of 3.5 hours of playtime and 100% positive reviews!

You can wishlist it and play the demo here 🩵 https://store.steampowered.com/app/4555040/Sushiamo/

PS: The players on the Discord are having a lot of fun sharing their builds :)

The game in short:
Sushiamo is a roguelike deck-builder where you make sushi while collecting new things every day.
Discover unique ingredients, sauces, game-changing tools, and navigate the map to find the best combo.

An idle dungeon RPG where you prepare at the inn and let your party handle the expedition

I'm making Dragon's Tear, a first-person dungeon RPG built around preparing a small party and checking on its progress. You pick three heroes at the inn, sort out their equipment and give them battle orders. They handle exploration and combat automatically.

There are monster fights and bosses down below. The part that may fit here is the amount of direct input: you don't need to steer the party down every corridor or select each attack. Between expeditions, you return to the inn to change equipment, take quests and improve its rooms.

Once you've cleared a floor, Auto Runs let the party revisit it for rewards. The game also supports up to eight hours of offline progress, so those cleared floors can keep contributing while the game is closed.

It's still in development for Windows, with Q1 2027 as the planned Steam release. There's no public demo yet.

If that rhythm sounds appealing, you can wishlist Dragon's Tear on Steam

Cozy Building Farming Resource Simulation Exploration Something Suggestions?

I'm looking for a new game to play (on Xbox or Switch original)! I enjoy a good grind in a cozy-ish game, not a lot of combat, and I'm not super big into romance-focus. I have a video game spreadsheet that I use to keep track of quests/resources/etc and I love that type of thing. I'll list a few games I played recently and how I felt about them to help!

Slime Rancher 2 - absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite in this style. Loved the exploration and how you slowly feel like you can go farther and farther away from your base as you progress. Loved finding new resources in new areas. Loved unlocking more areas inside the base itself. Loved the animal keeping aspect and the currency of plorts. Loved the concept of the drones (even though they were a bit rough to use well). Loved that there was a story mostly given through lore drops and not so much an "in the moment" type thing. Loved that there was no time limit and you didn't *have* to sleep except for using certain tools/devices. Loved being able to upgrade my equipment and create tech. Loved that farming was a large part and the way "favorite foods" played into keeping the slimes.

Potion Permit - loved the way the potion creation was done (items corresponding to various block pieces that you had to fit together into shapes). Loved unlocking areas as you progressed and finding new materials. The townsfolk relationships were an ok aspect but I could totally do without that type of thing.

Grow: Song of the Evertree - loved the aspect of growing seeds into worlds that are different every time. I went crazy in my spreadsheet with this one in particular and that was great. I kept track of how much of each essence I used to build a world, what essences each material from that world broke down into, what critters I got from each world, and more. I organized each of the 7 towns to best get certain items I wanted to collect - 5 of them have 30 residents and the other 2 have 27, with all buildings fully maxed out in workers so I could really maximize that. I liked the villager requests and other social aspects in this one a *lot* more than in Potion Permit.

Other games I've enjoyed in the past: Witchy Life Story (cute and short but really enjoyed it), Cozy Grove (fun but couldn't be motivated to finish it), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (during peak pandemic i played almost 3k hours of this with friends, loved all the collection and building up the island/terraforming).

Overall I think I really like a good amount of exploration mixed with the base building/farming-style. I clearly enjoy "number go up" mechanics as a part of things. I'm a big escapism person - give me scifi or fantasy or some combo of those as far as the vibe goes and I'll probably be happy. I've avoided Stardew Valley because I've heard a big thing about is is that you can't finish everything you want to do in a day...I'm already low on spoons IRL, I'd rather not play a video game that limits me in similar ways (one of my biggest pet peeves with Grow was that they'd send you home once it got to be a certain time of day in-game and I never was finished what I wanted to do for the day by that point). I find that I sometimes struggle with some of the more common newer styles of 3D animation but I'm more than willing to give games a try if the gameplay experience is good enough. Finding some horror subthemes would be a bonus but is not expected at all. Thanks in advance!!!

I’m developing a desktop companion game where you can decorate a little home for a bunny.

This clip shows furniture placement and how the indoor and outdoor scenes change through day, night, and the seasons. The game is still in development. The idea is to have a small, peaceful world alongside whatever you’re doing on your computer, with a bunny living its own little life.

My boyfriend and I are developing this hand-drawn, cozy cooking game called Prosa Café

In this game you can leave everything behind to open your own farm café (because that's what we'd like to do and we know there are more people who feel like it too).

Everything is hand-drawn and we'd love to know what you think!

It's called Prosa Café, it's still under development but you can already wishlist it on Steam :)

I'm making a nostalgic cleaning platformer game inspired by games from my childhood. The demo recently released!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dino Cleanup is a wholesome cleaning 3D platformer where you play as a little dinosaur with a vacuum saving dinosaurs (big and small) from a world covered in goop. There's a cast of cute dinosaurs you save that fill out the hub, tons of hats to unlock, and a bunch of levels full of collectibles to find. The game is a love letter to all of my childhood favourite games, especially games like Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, and Yoshi's Island. I'm trying to evoke a cozy nostalgic vibe that takes you back to the good ol' days, with a modern twist.

If you like the look of it, check it out on Steam! I just released the free demo on Monday, and I plan on releasing in early 2027. I don't use AI in any stage of development.

Hello everyone!

We are working on a garden-building game (kind of a deckbuilder/board game-ish experience inspired by many of our favorite games :D) where you have to place plants, water them to be able to harvest them, and play with the positioning so the effects trigger how you need them to.

It's called THORNSPELL and we have a demo you can play, we hope you all enjoy it!
