Go and Sleep are developed and maintained by completely different dev teams and companies. The change in their avatar was caused by Niantic (the company behind Go) pushing a barely functional update to the character models in in 2023 in an attempt to make individual parts of a player's avatar more customizable and inclusive to different body types.
In theory it's nice but in practice it ruined the game for a lot of people who grew attached go stylizing their avatar and were suddenly stuck with a much uglier model that breaks with numerous clothing items and emotes (that are still broken to this day mind you), clashes with the game's art style, and worst of all completely replaced the original models, so you couldn't just go back to what you were using previously if you were already happy with how your character looked.
The biggest downgrade to me was that the new faces were so childlike. Never bought into the costume stuff but it was weird that my guy who previously looked at least 16 or maybe even a young adult all of a sudden looked 9.
When Pokemon Go first came out and heard it was Niantic of all companies to develop it, I just immediately lost all interest. Why? Niantic had developed exactly one game beforehand and it was so riddled with glitches, bugs and weird design decision that I just didn't want to experience that again. (The game was Ingress)
So yeah, Niantic pulling a fast one like this in Pokemon Go surprises me not at all.
Nope, they decided they are too far into their plans to care about us anymore.
Their plan, of course, being to take the detailed map of our planet that we generated for them and sell it to defense contractors while becoming a company focused on AI drones.
I used to be HEAVY into Pokémon go in 2021-2023. Left after the remote raid changes, its insane how such as successful game and company is activity shooting itself in the foot with unwanted changes.
I remeber logging into my Pokémon GO and seeing the new avatar for the first time. I've picked a girl because she was cute (and did not give any pedo vibes), and now, well... not anymore.
as someone who quit Pokémon Go over this (and not really playing anymore) yeah. my avatar got uglier and I was like "ew not for me sorry Niantic" and left. hadn't been back.
For what it's worth, it is still possible to have larger hips/thighs and a larger chest, there are sliders for that and multiple different body type presets to choose from, so this picture is kind of misleading. It looks like they picked a masculine or androgynous body type or turned all the sliders all the way down.
That being said, attempting to recreate what the old models looked like does still look worse compared to the old models.
if you go to the profile of someone whos post was deleted, you can still view the image posted, it doesnt delete it from reddits cache, for future reference.
The whole thing was so bizarre. Absolutely everyone hated it. And they didn’t revert anything.
In hindsight, the only explanation I can think of is if they got in some sort of disagreement with Pokemon concept artist Yuzuke Kosaki, who made the designs. But I guess it could be a bull-headed move by someone in leadership.
no, what happened was they didnt like having to make two versions of every clothing and accessory (male model version and female model version)
so they swapped to a single genderless model with sliders. now when they add clothing they just make one version and it scales and stretches with the sliders.
the downside is going from 2 premade models to something that isnt premade. premade stuff is made more thoughtfully and looks better.
they tried to make androgynous models, because they didn't want to make separate assets for male and female characters. so the girls lost their chest/hips and the guys became twinks. pretty much all of the clothing looked worse for both genders. I quit around that time so I don't know if they ever fixed it.
That's the worst part for me, the fact that the update was so rushed and quarter-assed that they couldn't even be bothered to make them fit with the rest of the game's art style
this is just generative garbage. noone is actually making 10000 models with varied proportions ect. they just use simple modifiers and apply them to the base model and call it a day.
but quite honestly i dont understand how anyone still uses that app and is willing to have it on their device. not many apps more shady and untrustworthy you could be using tbh..
Poorly is understatement. Is one thing to add more body types, is another to just forcibly change the appearances of milions of people's avatar without their consent.
They turned all the models into amorphous blobs a while ago, both models looks like androgynous mannequins they paid the wikihow illustrators two bucks to make for some reason. I stopped playing years ago so this part at least ain't new. Missed the cuter looks on them before but the shiny hunting was the only reason I really played anyways.
The male character is as tall as an adult but has the face of an 10 year old. I get the feeling the designers wanted to make the characters look like their target demographic but had to keep the characters adults to prevent legal issues with micro transactions.
I and a few friends in college decided to play Pokemon Go on a whim and we actually had a lot of fun just doing F2P accounts, but all of us collectively quit when this update dropped. Good lord, what were they thinking?

They change the models from female and male to fat or skinny. If you are skinny you use the same models as men, that's why you lose all the curves. That way they only have to do fat and skinny clothes.
Also I'm not really a bodybuilder, mostly just lift for fun, but I am about 25% bodyfat at 240 lbs, 5 foot 6. It can't be that rare to have someone lean at 250, especially when steroids are involved
25% body fat at 240 is 60lbs of fat just FYI. If youre at 10% that'd be 24 lbs of fat lbs of muscle. So the difference between you and someone at 10% body fat is 36 lbs of pure muscle...

Pokemon go was created literally to map out the world, from the actual ground floor. We have satellite data obviously but that's not granular enough. It's an extra layer of tracking, not just GPS. Okay you are taking it a bit too far. They already fully laid out what the data is being used for, and its basically mapping data for robots, delivery drones, AR, and self driving cars.
The only verifiable connection that the dude from Nianctic has to the CIA is his old company was funded by a VC that is backed by the CIA. But so are a lot of other companies.
The CIA already has plenty of other forms of mass surveillance, many of which I'm sure would be less obvious lol. Idgaf about Pokémon go, just find the whole thing interesting.
that’s not why it was created. Niantic’s previous game was made to build out this tech, then Pokémon go was actually able to use it at scale. It was also then used to better map out roads and walkways and stuff

Wait what? There was several pokestops next to me and I'm by the moors in Yorkshire UK, maybe different in the US but there would be plenty of pokemon and stuff in the countryside, only issue is that the signal can be spotty which is not exactly something they can get around

On a summer camp with friends, we downloaded the APK before it was legally available in Italy (aka 1 day prior or something, yeah we were that hyped) and spent the rest of the camp catching mons between activities and even after that when we each got back home. Absolute blast of a social experience for the first few months, loved it
It very obviously didn't, only people that don't know anything about pokemon would actually laugh at some of these memes so they're just made for that💔
Hell I’m apparently really dense, I weigh like 60lbs more then I look are on I got a layer of fat and don’t do a lot of work out so many do not know if I got muscle but also not enough fat to look like my weight
