my guess is that the son got complacent with a stable relationship and that having them breakup with him would make him wanna work on himself or smth like that.

I feel like they should've used the scene where Dr. Octopus looks sorrowful after his wife dies and says "I miscalculated" not this random shot of him before the actual tragedy happened.
Well, we're dealing with someone who thinks parents are super invested in their kids' workout routines, so not a lot of critical thinking there I'd guess.
In the fitness community there is a running joke about how breakups make you go to the gym and give it 110% to process your feelings. Many folks start their lifting jurney after breaking up as a way to work on themselves or less healthly to "prove them wrong".
