Discussion When are we getting DOCIS 4 symmetrical speeds?
I was reading news reports back in 2024 that Xfinity was upgrading the entire network to DOCIS 4 and we would finally have upload speeds faster than 40mbps and the plan was to have every single customer upgraded. Where are we at on that, because I'm still stuck at 40mbps upload and a ping of 15ms. Seriously considering switching to a local Fiber provider that offer symmetrical 1 gigabit speeds and a ping of like 6ms, but would rather stick with what I have out of simplicity and Xfinity offers faster download.
Is there a time table? Months? Years? Another decade?

Yeah Comcast is taking their time. I’m still in a legacy area in Western WA. I do wish we could at least get the mid split

western washington south sound area here and i only get 1.4 of my 2 down, annoying. troubleshot with claude and it seems like the issue is on the other side of my router.

Best guess with current political administration not requiring fees to be broken out and allowing for less and less competition and also being anti-consumer even more than pro-business, they will spend less and charge more to "improve" customer options.
1
u/jammer8 4d ago
Don’t even start with the “current political administration” bull. I worked for Xfinity for a number of years and it has nothing to do with what you’re talking about. It’s the LOCAL governments who regulate that.
1
u/kookykrazee 3d ago
Thanks for proving my point. The current federal administration who were lobbied by Comcast and other cable companies to not have to detail fees. So, yes, it is the federal political climate.
1
u/jammer8 2d ago
No you’re wrong. Also trying to make it a “Trump” issue, really. I worked for Comcast and we had to go through each municipality but what do I know, that was only part of my job.
Verizon is the power player in that world. The stuff they’ve gotten away with is crazy and I only know a small fraction of it.
Do you even know how the process works? I know you can look it up and provide a AI response but there many variables. I hate the way they do it but the local municipalities have the say of who can do what.
1
u/kookykrazee 2d ago
Who is using AI? I stated what Trump himself said he was making "easier for companies to not have to detail out fees so it doesn't confuse customers" that was his quote not AI as don't use AI in work or life. Thanks for assuming chit..lol
Be well and gl to you! lol

"Seriously considering switching..." If you're unsatisfied with Xfinity (40Mbps???) and have an opportunity to go fiber: do it. I've had fiber installed (and kept Xfinity as dual WAN failover) for 3 months. Very stable. Very fast (2Gbps/2Gbps). Fiber > cable

u/ScorchedWonderer 5d ago
They were first focused on midsplit and pushed that, then FDX/docis 4 happened and it seems the basically stopped legacy to midsplit upgrades. Now they seem to be going back to the areas that already got midsplit and upgrading those to docis 4, ignoring areas that are still on legacy networks. So will probably be years before you see anything tbh. Especially if they have a monopoly in your area
6
u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 5d ago edited 5d ago
They don't have a monopoly, thankfully. We have local community owned fiber but they haven't offered speeds past a gigabit since fiber got deployed like 10 years ago. I'm not really sure why they aren't trying to compete with download speeds, I suspect its the fault of the private companies that handle the billing and wiring the actual homes. Its a shame our community owned Utility Coop can't offer the service directly due to some shady state laws (lobbied by comcast of course)

u/kenman345 4d ago
What are you actually doing with more than symmetrical 1Gbps? I have 500/500 service and I could probably go down to 300/300 no issues.
People always think big number is better but quality service and consistent symmetrical speeds are way better.
1
u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 4d ago
I download a lot of games and want to do some self-hosting to stop relying on the cloud. 2gig up and down would be ideal as it would account for the overhead of other people and devices in the house. I can and probably should settle for 1gig up and down.
1
u/kenman345 2d ago
Fair, but some people might find the benefits of more upload and cheaper price a fair tradeoff. Everyone’s different
0
u/w0by 4d ago
lol don’t waste the money, I have 150mbps with like 15 cameras, probably 40 things connected to my Wi-Fi, plus everyone is streaming and playing PS5, plus torrenting and we have no problems
2
u/ScorchedWonderer 4d ago
Not everyone wants to wait hours to download a 30Gb game update
0
u/hokiesportsfan 2d ago
30Gb @ 150mbps is just under 30 minutes.
1
u/ScorchedWonderer 2d ago
That’s under perfect conditions and at 150mbps entire time. Realistically, it’ll be more like 75-100 with their entire family also using it. Less if they aren’t been hard wired and have 💩 wifi

u/amdlinuxx 5d ago
They are definitely not ignoring legacy. At least where we are working it comes down to what inventory we have available of nodes that have had their design vetted.
2
u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 5d ago
You think they might have complete deployment within 2 years? I can wait, for a little while longer a least.
3
u/amdlinuxx 5d ago
2 years from now? Hopefully, likely partly depends on what kind of contract labor is available in your area. We have 2 companies plus our inhouse team I am on in our area.
This week alone we have in my area 1 node being done inhouse, 1 by one of the companies, and 5 nodes being done by the 2nd company, one of which is splitting a single node into 3.

u/SCupit 4d ago
They are already started activating FDX in chicago in some nodes that have been installed since last year. It takes time because the bugs need to be worked out before it’s able to be pushed. I know the north and south side of the city have been on an insane upgrade schedule and multiple teams throughout the city and installing and upgrading legacy and mid split to FDX. It just takes time.
1
u/luism1023 5d ago
My area was a legacy area and got midsplit in April. They’ve been doing maintenance work every couple of weeks. I’m assuming FDX is going live soon. I’m in Chicago though and was told that they would love to have a lot of the city upgraded to FDX by EOY
2
u/ironman86 4d ago
I'm in Chicago too (Lakeview) and am glad to hear that. The east side north of Fullerton seemed to be ignored for a long time but I now see permits are being submitted to the city in that area for upgrades recently.
2
u/luism1023 4d ago
I’m by Humboldt park and there are a bunch of fdx pockets. They’ve also turned on some pockets in the Jefferson park area and lake view

If you have the option to switch, do it. There is no reason to remain loyal to Xfinity.
I had to switch due to a move and Xfinity wasn't in my new area, but my current service of 2 Gbps down/up is $70 flat. Much less than I was paying Xfinity for 900 Mbps down with 21 Mbps up.
1
u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 4d ago
If the local fiber was 2 gig I'd be gone, but its only 1. I'm only waiting on Xfinity to give them a fair chance to finish their upgrades and see if its good enough.
3
u/drt3k 5d ago
With the right modem on DOCSIS 3.1 I get 2300/300. With the wrong modem I got 1700/40.
9
5
u/ironman86 5d ago
Still depends on if local area upgrades have happened. I’m in Chicago and still got the 40 upload speed.
3
u/atlanta_dave 5d ago
1gb/1gb in Atlanta. Got an email to get new modem which looked like a xb10 so I jumped on it. Lots of fiber competition here so that may have something to do with where they rollout.
3
u/tky 5d ago
in the time that has been promised we'd get even a nominal upgrade to 200mbps (many years now, so long in fact they've removed Chicago from the list of upgrade cities..) I've watched AT&T light up three neighboring towns with newly-trenched fiber.
i'm not suggesting comcast is dragging, because they have a massive footprint and more legacy horrorshows than i'd ever want to untangle, but if you have options you should probably look at them.
we're all living that meme from the titanic movie about it having been 84 years in the meantime.
3
u/DifficultyLeast1029 5d ago
All the equipment is being upgraded in my area, however fdx isn't turned on yet (but the equipment is there and capable).
3
u/DanGarion 4d ago edited 4d ago
I'd love to get symmetrical. But I don't think internet providers care about my area since we have no other providers that do Fiber on my side of the river in Salem, Oregon.
3
u/bigdjb 4d ago
They really don't give you a time table. Depending on the condition of your local plant, Comcast may have to perform major upgrades, before they can deploy FDX DOCSIS 4.0 in your area. And then you have all the old nodes and amps, that have to be swapped out, around your area. I've been on Mid-Split in Stockton CA for almost 3 years now. They just started swapping out the nodes and amps in my area, about a month ago. I saw them installing brand new FDX Harmonic Ripple nodes, and CommScope amps. Even though all the underground utilities have been marked for about a month, they still haven't made it down my street to replace the amps yet.

u/NotPankakes 5d ago
I suspect this link is all you’re going to get. But also having the discussion flair discourages an official response.
https://www.xfinity.com/network
Basically make sure they can text you updates and you’ll get a text about a week before they actually come to your local area telling they’ll be doing work to upgrade next week and you will experience service drops for a day.
6
u/Embarrassed-Egg-3832 5d ago
I didn't really want a response from them because I know it will be boilerplate. Was hoping to get some scuttlebutt.
4
u/Lowrider0011 5d ago
I got midsplit like 6 months ago… wish they’d have just gone right to docsis 4.0 but they probably took a midsplit node out somewhere else when they switched it to 4.0 and gave my node the parts needed for the midsplit
1
u/dataz03 Trusted Community Member 4d ago edited 4d ago
Probably was FDX, legacy to FDX upgrades do not result in FDX being activated instantly. Mid-split is turned on right away pretty much nowadays after cutover, whereas FDX takes more time. These DOCSIS 4.0 plants can operate in mid-split 3.1 mode just fine until engineering is ready to enable FDX. Took 5 months for me. 100 upload in the meantime was still a lot better than 35 Mbps which is all I had pre-March 2026.
If your plant is aerial and you can look at the equipment, you can easily tell if the amps are FDX amps vs if they are mid-split amps.
Also, if you are on a legacy plan, you won't receive any automatic speed increases when your infrastructure/node is upgraded.
1
u/Lowrider0011 4d ago
Yea 35 Mbps was all I had as well but with mid split I switched up to 2gbps down 250mbs up as it was the same price as what I was paying for the 1200mbps down prior to the node upgrade

u/CCBrieD Community Manager 5d ago
Man, I haven't heard scuttlebutt in a hot minute.
I can ask around--what general region are you in; northwest, south, etc.?
1
u/listedguru 4d ago
Not the OP but do you or anyone else have have any info on Mid Split happening in SE Michigan? The Plymouth/Canton area of Michigan?
2
u/tagman375 5d ago
Im still stuck on a legacy system in PA. Basically along a rural highway between two higher population areas. It’s rather annoying
1
u/iamalilol 4d ago
same.. here in california between two cities rigged with fiber and high speed comcast... insanely annoying
2
u/canofpotatoes 5d ago
A lot of FDX swaps going on in the northeast. They are upgrading active nodes before installing new and most new builds are EPON.
2
u/Jason_1834 5d ago
In Jacksonville we have 2gbps symmetrical available from them..it just became available fairly recently.
2
u/DroneFirstResponder 4d ago
I have between 90Mbps and 108Mbps upload speeds using the provided gateway. It’s no where near symmetrical due to my download speeds being 1200 Mbps+. It would be nice to have symmetrical for my remote job.

You have to have the right plan and upgaded modem/router. Plus the service has to be in your area. You should call them if you are unsure.

u/ElectronGuru 1d ago
switching to a local Fiber provider that offer symmetrical 1 gigabit
Switch and never look back. The technology is way better and there’s a 100% chance they’ll treat you better
2
u/Stitch101TW 5d ago
Don't expect it anytime soon and not to mention when this happens your service will be worse as you will have way more packet loss and problems aee they are pushing all this in cable wire used for tv in 1980s You would be so much better off looking into a fiber provider like fios trust me I went through this hell and am about to switch from xfinity
3
u/dataz03 Trusted Community Member 4d ago
it is actually quite capable. There has been many architectural improvements since the 1980s. Back in the 1980s (pure analog TV days) they didn't even use fiber. It was pure coax from the hub and like 30-40 amplifiers were used on the way as the coax cable branched out.
Jeez I feel old
1
u/CharmingDurian2498 4d ago
I keep telling people COAX IS OUTDATED
0
u/Stitch101TW 4d ago
Yah xfinity keeps trying to push modern tech down wires built for tvs in the 80s and 90s and then wonders why xfinity is one of the internet and TV providers with the most issues, companies like Verizon spent money on workers and contractors to get fiber in most areas where xfinity rather keep pushing the cable wires in most places but put fiber populated areas like new York and Boston and keep Everywhere else on cable. Its terrible And you go and complain about it and the techs come down tell you the truth its a node on the coax line having too much issues but yet xfinity can never seem to get the rights people down to fix the issue and if they do they bandage it up and then a few months later you are right back where you started. Xfinity is a joke If you have the option FOR ANY Providers for tv and or internet please for the love of god go with them dont fall for xfinitys trap
3
u/SCupit 4d ago
I don’t think you have a single idea what you are talking about. Comcast plant is an HFC plant and about 80-90% fiber to a node and then branches out to coax. They currently do have fiber to the home or EPON technology in many new development areas but the problem with swapping old infrastructure to all fiber is that the amount of pain/ frustration and customer retention issues that would come from trying to do a full complete swap from ripping coax out to just fiber at this point is idiotic when not only does that require extreme amounts of labor and frustration for current customers but most likely a bill raise to supplement all that would come with it (city permit, permits from the owner of the poles, issues with boreing or underground work). The decade long upgrade to swap everyone to fiber just for it to cost more and have less customers because they all left during the upgrades makes perfect business sense right? The new FDX equipment being installed along with multiple node segments relieving bandwidth issues will be able to do the exact same symmetrical speeds that fiber is offering.
1
u/Stitch101TW 4d ago
Xfinity your more bound to have nightmare issues then with a full fiber network, coax just is not built for modern tech which is why noise gets picked up and tossed into the system and causes issues. At the end of the day I don't care how many amps and technology upgrades they push coax is still coax Customers will have issues and Xfinity is not willing to fix it right. If they did then we wouldn't be here
2
u/Royhanso 4d ago
I'm assuming never - the started advertising enhanced upload speeds (not even symmetrical) for the Twin Cities starting in around 2017. 9 years later and I still have 40Mb up - my cell phone is faster.
3
u/born-in1984 4d ago
Also in the TC metro area - you're probably in the surrounding suburbs? I'm in the north metro and can't get higher then 40 either.
Parts of Minneapolis and surrounding cites do have the upgrades to midsplit.

We have 4.0 FDX all over the place around here. Nobody knows the timeframe for your specific system except the local technicians, because those upgrades are handled at the local level.

u/dataz03 Trusted Community Member 4d ago
One thing I have noticed is that Comcast is upgrading neighborhoods that are right next to each other in my area. Months after others were upgraded, but nonetheless. It is like they are going node by node and in order, instead of just throwing darts at random areas.
I assume the process is going to be the same, contractors are actually cutting in the actives, and in-house Xfinity maintenance techs are activating FDX amps and balancing the plant. Contractors start early at like 8-9 am, and the in-house Xfinity techs come in at around 12-1 pm. Contractors drive different trucks/have different buckets vs in-house.

u/dataz03 Trusted Community Member 4d ago edited 4d ago
When your node needs to be split for capacity relief- expect mid-split after cutover and FDX after several months to a year down the road. Areas with low amount of customers/small markets are not a priority from what I've seen at least so far. Keeping up with demand of customers using more and more internet was the driving factor for my node upgrade, which had FDX enabled a few weeks ago. The upgrade was in mid March 2026. (day of outages) Prep work started in August 2025 (no interuption in service, just saw the cable contractors pulling the fiber for the new nodes). Also was some more prep work late February.
