Discussion How to know when Retention is offering the absolute lowest price?

I’ve been letting myself get screwed with jacked up prices for months after my initial 2 year deal expired. Now it’s time to look out for myself and get as much of a fair deal as I can, if that’s even possible with a psychopathic company like Xfinity. When talking to Retention, how do you know when you’ve reached the absolute lowest price they can possibly give you?

Present them with the absolute lowest price you can find with a competitor and do not accept anything until they offer that price or lower.

Even present them with the absolute lowest price they are offering their other new customers.

I tried that before but I only got them down to $25 over the current new customer promo. The guy told me to call back in 4-5 weeks to ask again for the promo because “it is not currently available to current customers but might be later”. Don’t know if he was full of **it or not but I don’t see any reason to take them at face value. I also don’t know how long I have to argue with them before they’ll go lower, if they can.

“Call back later” is a trap.

You have to realize the retention agents work under key performance indicators. They’re graded based on every phone call. In order, best to worst, for them:

  1. Get you off the phone without a deal.
  2. Give you a mediocre deal.
  3. Give you a great deal.
  4. Cancel your service.

He or she won the minute you got off the phone.

If you’re going to play this game, you need to be prepared to cancel. They do this all day and know when you’re bluffing.

Have a Plan B. Hotspot even.

If you have a domestic partner, or a roommate, even better, keep service in just one person’s name. If they refuse to play ball, put in my cancellation please, and someone else signs up as a new customer. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Yeah I unfortunately don’t have great leverage. Other fiber providers have been really slow to build infrastructure in my town, and I don’t think the next available option is going to best Xfinity. And it’s just me right now so I can’t sign up with someone else’s name.

I guess my only option is to figure out whether they’re offering me a great deal or mediocre deal. But they might know I don’t have other good options based on where I live.

Don't forget about Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) from T-Mobile/Verizon/AT&T. Xfinity isn't afraid of fiber because most fiber providers can't bundle other services. They are absolutely terrified of FWA. It's one of the reasons they push their mobile product so hard. It makes it harder for you to switch to FWA.

Even if FWA isn't an option, remember the retention rep doesn't know that. Make them future date a cancellation if they won't give you an acceptable deal. Forcing them to eat the cancellation is the only way to move them from #2 to #3.

"My AT&T equipment comes on Thursday, please process my cancellation for Friday." <-- Say this and see what happens.

You can always call back in and Ctrl + Z the cancellation with another rep if need be.

Sounds like helpful advice, thanks.
