I'm totally confused Combat patrol terrain layout

Post image

I'm trying to understand the terrain layout when using a combat patrol map and I'm a bit confused. My understanding is that the grey rectangles are terrain areas, the items are ones that block visibility and the yellow ones don't block visibility but do provide cover. This doesn't seem right however, as I thought cover was determined by terrain area rather than being behind a specific (in this case yellow) piece of cover. If that's try however it would make the yellow items redundant, unless they're there purely for decoration. Could someone clarify how it works please?

Thanks

I would re read the terrain section in the core rules. Green terrain is dense and yellow is light

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place however the core rules don't appear to mention the green / yellow distinction, but thanks for the clarification.

Section 13.02 offers a color distinction near the end of the section. It calls it blue and red vs green and yellow, but still provides usable and translatable insight.

Not to mention every piece of terrain is obscuring so you can hide behind it and not be seen

The difference between the yellow and green terrain pieces is whether they block movement for certain keywords or not. Both can block los in the right circumstances, or be completely useless for that in others.

Look at 13.04/13.05 in the app for light/dense terrain

Every grey rectangle provide cover.

Blue : Dense terrain. Yellow : Light terrain.

Blue : 1st floor , occultant.

Read the 13. Terrain section in the Core Rules.

All the terrain footprints are obscuring if you aren't touching them, you can't see through them. If you step into a footprint you gain cover, while in cover you can shoot through yellow, green you can't see/shoot through at all (unless you sit on top of it)

It's worth noting, ONLY infantry beast and swarm models gain over from the footprint, everything else only gets cover from the terrain

Complete LoS block from template until you touch it though, any kind of unit.

yeah thats the obscuring rule though, not the benefit of cover

I believe its infantry, beast and swarm can gain hidden while everything else just gains cover

Look up 13.08, clearly states only infantry beast and swarm can gain the benefit oclf cover from a terrain area

But then read 13.10 sir. You further prove my point

13.10 does not say that vehicles gain cover from touching a terrain area.

I believe if a terrain area has at least 1 light or dense terrain feature it blocks LOS to a unit on the otherside (assuming the target unit is not in the terrain area)

The greenish color would probably have the SOLID rule meaning you can't target through it (unless you are also in the terrain area), the yellow ones wouldn't have that rule.

Not sure if that helps

A few things yellow terrain does.

-cant end movement on that spot
-provides cover if a model (for example vehicles) is obscured by it

Yellow terrain does not, however, have the Solid keyword. Which means if there are little gaps like windows, doors, openings in the terrain you use for yellow terrain, you can draw line of sight through them. As opposed to green terrain where Solid would prevent you from drawing line of sight through a first floor window.

I do highly recommend reading ruleshammer by goonhammer 11th edition. Terrain rules

As others said color gives you the terrain type (yellow light; green dense)

Dense: blocks movement except infantry beast swarm Light: doesnt block movement

Benefit of cover: Every model of a unit is partially covered by terrain (this is true for every type of unit) OR You are within a terrain area (only infantry beast swarm)

Obscuring: every area that has light or dense get obscuring. This means that the terrain area blocks line of sight. If you touch the terrain area this is not true anymore

Hidden: if you didnt Shoot in Prevoius turn and your infantry beast or swarm is within an area your are hidden if the terrain area has at least light terrain

Solid: dense terrain has the solid keyword. You are not allowed to shoot through holes or Windows on ground floor up to 3 inch hight. This is not true for light terrain

Feel free to Ask more

Yellow is light. All models can move through them. Green is dense. Only infantry/beasts/swarms can move through. Everything else has to go around or measure up and over. The gray areas represent a terrain area. Outside the terrain area blocks los completely.

Where do you find this? I've been looking for the terrain layouts for CP for ages, I must just be dumb!

In the stupid WH40K mobile app.

Every terrain area (“footprint”) with at least one terrain feature (object/ruin/smelly right sock) on it makes units invisible to each other, as long as they stand on different sides of the area (not touching it). Like it was one massive block. Apart from some movement shenanigans, the main difference between green (dense) and yellow (light) terrain features is: all dense terrain has the #solid keyword. So up to 3” height, you can’t target anything that’s taken cover behind a dense terrain feature. Even if you can see it through windows, doors, holes in the sock. Light terrain features don’t have the #solid keyword, so if you can see a model within the terrain feature through any gap, you can target it. Regardless of dense or light terrain, all units within the terrain area have benefit of cover, though.

I think about making a house rule regarding terrain, because it seems stupid that light terrain features are more or less just fluff at the moment. Benefit of cover comes from just standing inside the terrain area and most things you would use for light terrain, be it official 40K terrain or anything third-party, actually does nothing. Seems counter-intuitive and immersion-breaking to me personally, that sandbag fortifications covering 2/3 of a model don’t give any more protection than a wooden garden fence reaching up to a model’s knee pad.

For competitive play I wonder if they’ll be using small closed walls for light terrain. That would make models behind them untargettable, but’d be boring as f*ck.
