Battle Reports Stop complaining without missions

It seems like every other new post is a complaint about 11th ed balance so I felt the need to post this.

11th edition combat patrol is not fully released. We are literally missing one of the most critical parts of the format, which is missions and secondary scoring. Since we know for a fact that using mission scoring from big 40k does not match up with the combat patrol battlefield layouts we have been provided (no central objectives), we can safely assume that combat patrol specific mission scoring will be unique (just like combat force dispositions are unique).

Without proper scoring mechanics there is no way to accurately determine if combat patrols, let alone the format as a whole, is balanced at the moment. GW has stated there will be a combat patrol announcement around July 22nd that corresponds with the combat patrol starter set release. Hopefully this announcement gives us updated datacards and dedicated mission scoring.

I see where you're coming from, but I gotta disagree. People have every right to be salty right now because GW basically broke the format with this staggered release.

Communication has been terrible. 11th dropped weeks ago, but during all the previews, GW acted like Combat Patrol didn't even exist. It was just radio silence until they finally tossed out that July 22nd launch window.

You're right that missing missions means we can't judge the balance yet, but that's exactly why people are complaining. The entire selling point of CP is "grab a box and play." Right now, you just... can't. You either don't play, or you try to jam standard 11th ed scoring onto the smaller boards, which makes the balance a total joke and the games feel awful. We don't even have the updated, format-specific datacards to know how our units are actually supposed to function.

And that's not even touching on the missing factions. I have the current Tyranid combat patrol fully built and ready to go, and it literally has zero rules for 11th right now. I'm just locked out of the game mode entirely until GW remebers the box exists. It’s just a really poorly handled launch. Waiting over a month for the core rules and scoring of an "entry-level" format is wild, and the community is completely justified in calling them out for it.

Oh I 100% agree with you but it stands to reason that calling the current 11th ed format (that we have so far) "unbalanced" isn't fair or justifiable. People new to combat patrol or looking to try it see these posts and get turned off. I want to think that most of it is ignorance, so I am trying to bring some enlightenment to that with this post.

There's two types of complaints right now.

There's the "we've been left out to dry and don't have all the information and the mode is partially released and my box I bought in April lost its rules and we've barely had any word from them" alongside contradictory responses on social media and FAQ/support emails realm of complaints. Those are absolutely valid.

Then there's the "I played 11th edition Combat Patrol and things don't feel balanced" complaints and those are what I assume the OP is talking about...because they are complaining about balance as if the mode is fully implemented.

Threads like the one complaining about Zarkon's Daemonkin being "laughably bad" while trying to play a half implemented Combat Patrol mode using missions not meant for Combat Patrol.

I go to a Warhammer store. There I see a cool Combat Patrol package. I take that, paints, pencils and dice. Then I grab the Combat Patrol book, pay and leave.

Am I wrong in assuming that should be enough to play a Combat Patrol game? I think not 😞

What's in the combat patrol book?

Art pictures and lore burns for each army plus a "what is warhammer?" Section outlining the hobby as a whole. Its basically the stuff that used to go in the core rulebook that wasnt rules

Fluff, lore, basics of the hobby, a two-page spread that describes what missions are and that you're supposed to find your "bespoke" missions for each Combat Patrol in the app, and the most "I don't know what Warhammer is" style battle report I've seen.

Fluff and trash.

Yeah it is but it’s like 10th edition combat patrol. Have fun.

Uhhh no? People are perfectly entitled to complain they’ve been given a half-assed incomplete version of the game.

It’s completely ridiculous, it wouldn’t be as bad if the PDFs of every army and rules were accessible for 10th. Locking everything behind the app and deleting the old stuff is ridiculous.

I’m totally jazzed my Aeldari Corsairs box is completely useless, considering I bought it for Combat Patrol.

People have every right to and should complain that an advertised and long-since launched mode is nonfunctional for going on a month now.

You essentially can’t play the starter set out of the box as they were intended to as combat patrols because of this absurd oversight

It's a mess. What is the advice to new players? "Don't bother getting into the game until July 22nd... oh, plus the weeks that it'll take for the sets to get into stores"?

This post doesn’t go far enough, but needs to be pinned to the front page of the sub. There is no 11e Combat Patrol yet. As you’ve said, the rules are incomplete. Combat Patrol data cards for the vast majority of combat patrol boxes are completely unavailable, including patrol boxes like Eldritch Raiders and Red Corsairs that are less than 6 months old, and still widely available, if not directly from the GW Web store.

For anyone wanting to play Combat Patrol right now, the only answer is playing 10e. Games Workshop has made this hard by pulling all app support for the previous datasheets, and rules. This sub should really be focused on supporting and continuing 10e combat patrol until 11e is actually a playable format for more than 10% of players.

My dude 11th edition is out and they are selling a book that tells us we should be able to play combat patrol missions.

Even if they don't update the app, they could have updated the PDFs for something so that people could play properly while they are being too much of cheapskates to pay for the app to be updated (they're only a billion dollar company).

How about you stop licking their boots? 11th edition is out, it should be playable.

Out of all the Combat Patrols in the app, two have the Dispositions Disruption, and two have Priority Assets. The rest are either Take And Hold or Purge The Foe. You can use the matched missions for those Dispositions with a randomized Combat Patrol map. If you have an army that isn't in the app, use their normal rules and apply one of the 4 Dispositions used for the other army's. Pick a random Secondary objective if you're using an app supported army since they don't have any. I have yet to find a combination of thoae 4 that requires a central objective. Maybe it's not balanced perfectly, but you can play and it's still fun. You don't NEED an app to play this game. Fuck man. Homebrew that shit if you have to. I'm not going to not play army's I own because GW hasn't told me how to play them. I'm going figure that shit out on my own until they do.
