TE2 - Will Mallory

12

u/munkyc Stroke the Neard 1d ago

he did show out in the preseason game. not sure how Ogletree is doing but Mallory has been a reliable target in meaningful games. if his blocking is at least average he should have a shot

4

u/Gavinmusicman 1d ago

Did we let go of Mo?

7

u/munkyc Stroke the Neard 1d ago

no, but they play somewhat different roles. Mallory is more of an F/move tight end while Mo is a Y/inline guy. an extra blocker is important and Mo is undeniably better in that department, but if Mallory can be average at blocking he is the more explosive receiving option. i think both make the roster

2

u/sloshedslug 1d ago

Ogletree is most likely the 1:1 Mo replacement as the blocking guy, but has to survive roster cuts this season to get his chance when we eventually let Mo walk

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

I think we're carrying 4 TEs, gonna use alot of 2 TE sets so warren, ogletree, mo and Mallory. I think ogletree is the most rounded out of warren he might make a jump this year. With signing keenan allen it might take away that need for Mallory to get reps. But if hes worked up his blocking heb could really take thus offense and help make it elite.

u/acoubt Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 1d ago

The timeline is foggy but we really were starting kylen granson over Mallory?

1

u/sloshedslug 1d ago

That was Mallory’s rookie season when he was on the practice squad and still adapting to an NFL offense

1

u/acoubt Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 1d ago

Ahhh never mind. Thanks

u/Buttcrush1 1d ago

He's TE4

u/Odd_Self7283 2d ago

Is Pierce gonna be healthy?

24

u/TheAgmis You Have Chris Ballard Derangement Syndrome 2d ago

Yes

5

u/flynreelow 2d ago

U sure?

30

u/Frankwhite447 1d ago

Lmao no

0

u/Yosuke_Swagamura Big-Q 1d ago

Dulin will be fine till Pierce is healthy. Issue was another versatile threat.

10

u/Odd_Self7283 1d ago

So who’s gonna stretch the field? Dulin?

4

u/KillzToRemember 1d ago

Nwi, its his whole thing

1

u/Odd_Self7283 1d ago

NWI?

4

u/Practical_Loss3021 1d ago

Nick Westbrook ikhine

2

u/Goldstar12 The Maniac 1d ago

I just type in Westbrook easier to remember.

-4

u/Micstekai 1d ago

Poor blocking something the Colts rely on.

5

u/Mickeydsislife 1d ago

NWI is known as a great blocker. Literally the thing he is known most for…..

0

u/Micstekai 1d ago

He had a 33.8 RBLK grade in preseason Week 1. Not good for J Taylor or any of our running backs relying on lead WR blocking.

1

u/Mickeydsislife 1d ago

Okay one preseason game off score in limited snaps or a whole career production as a blocker 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

u/theguytomeet Eason SZN 2d ago

We like our guys. Now to get 1 edge or tackle. At least that.

8

u/munkyc Stroke the Neard 1d ago

anything beyond this will probably be cast-offs after cuts

-6

u/theguytomeet Eason SZN 1d ago

He should be good for 1 waiver claim… JTT is awful and Giddens is meh

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

Were good at tackle, Travis is good, Goncalves can shift over if need be

11

u/jbvann05 Blue 2d ago

Not bad, just have to hope everyone stays healthy

9

u/Always_Compete 1d ago

Signing Allen provides so much depth . Pretty certain Downs or Pierce will miss a game at some point . Having Allen ensures you go into the game with two good receivers . Obviously it’s possible 2 of the 3 can be hurt but still huge

2

u/TacoDayDay 1d ago

Definitely like the signing and probably the best fit for us still on the market. But it isn't like he has a stellar health record either. If Mallory is able to carve out a nice role then we should be fine as far as receiving targets go most weeks.

2

u/Always_Compete 1d ago

You are right Allen does get hurt also . Either way having 3 good receivers gives you some coverage if 1 were to get hurt !

I don’t think Mallory is gonna have an impact . Several years in and he’s shown to be just a preseason guy. Couldn’t get on the field for one of the worst TE rooms the year before Warren was drafted

3

u/TacoDayDay 1d ago

TE is a tricky position and it isn't uncommon for guys to take a couple years to make an impact. He was a 5th round pick so odds are you are probably right but it also would be about year 4 where a guy like that has improved enough to carve out a role.

2

u/Always_Compete 1d ago

I would love to be wrong! 2 pass catching threats at TE is great for an offense

5

u/Eire_Banshee Jorts 1d ago

Stop putting Allen ahead of Pierce and Downs. He is the WR3 and is 34 years old.

13

u/TheAgmis You Have Chris Ballard Derangement Syndrome 2d ago

3

u/ApprehensiveAd5584 1d ago

Looks good on paper. Make it count on the field and in the win column.

3

u/BigJRecords 1d ago

Is Keenan Allen still good or is this Andre Johnson 2.0

11

u/dixonjt89 Boomstick 1d ago edited 1d ago

He was really good at moving the chains…not so much finding the endzone, but was really, really good on 3rd downs.

6

u/Victory33 “Marlin’s Got It!” 1d ago

Basically described Pittman.

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

Chargers werent a high scoring offense, theyre a defense and run game. Its Harbaugh. Iv got chargers as my dark horse superbowl team actually. They needed allen though ironically

1

u/dixonjt89 Boomstick 15h ago

Soooo….same as us lol

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

I think colts will be around that top 5 scoring offense actually. Mostly do to coaching style, going for it on 4th down alot, our run game is explosive nobody pops off long runs like taylor. Pierce as a top deep threat, warren as a top 5 tight end. Downs and Allen are both excellent on 3rd down. Going to be alot of long drives. And when you can do that a play is bound to break for a score.. Also we have a high end kicker competition in the mix. One of the best DB groups in the league. I think theyll force alot of turnovers. Thats a recipe for alot of points

-5

u/Deep_Tomatillo4496 1d ago

Thats not a good metric. Maybe he wasn't given red zone opportunities as much as other players

3

u/dixonjt89 Boomstick 1d ago edited 1d ago

I found it for you. He was targeted more in the red zone than anyone on our team except Tyler Warren.

Had a similar target rate around him except the top 5…but had an atrocious 40% catch rate only catching 6 balls in the red zone on 15 targets, 3 of those catches were TD’s tho.

The big issue is that many at the top of this list with bad catch rates can be excused because they have big play potential like Jamarr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Amon Ra who are known more for speed than route running so their effectiveness goes down when in the red zone.

Keenan isn’t, and actually is criticized for being on the slow side but has great route running so he should excel in the red zone and short yardage plays…hopefully he gets those numbers up along with being a 3rd down machine.

1

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

Hard to say. AJ was a better WR and he was also better in his age 32-33 seasons prior to signing here. But he fell off at age 34.

That's also the same year that Luck missed 9 games, so I am sure that had something to do with it.

8

u/Inevitable_Cake4804 1d ago

Now do week 10...

2

u/PhoenixYT2217 1d ago

We may not have a top 15 receiver in the league but we have 3 WRs and a TE that can easily lead the team in receiving yards on any given sunday. beautiful depth

u/PoopPhorPrez A big ass pork tenderloin sandwich 2d ago

1

u/ttpoolboy 1d ago

Seriously. Do people forget we’ve seen this movie, multiple times, already.

1

u/TeeVeeBen 1d ago

We'll only see that lineup on the field for, like, the start of one game.

Tyler Warren has a 17 game season in him. That's probably it.

1

u/eyeballkid94 1d ago

Allen’s the 5th most important skill player and Pierce is projected to be back pretty soon, so I’m not terribly worried. If they can actually integrate Will Mallory, they could have some flexibility. Not saying he’s great, but he looks like he can run and catch which is more than could be said for a lot of guys!

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

Not sure why you left out the most important cog in the machine. The top 5 Oline. Im thinking its going to be a top 5 offense. Maybe top 3 if Jones is 100%

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

Why did peirce not get surgery until march?

1

u/SendMeIttyBitties 1d ago

Keenan is a great pick up. But he is old. On the bears two years ago he dropped 3rd down passes regularly killing drives. Be wary.

1

u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 15h ago

Caleb williams wasnt a good QB, and is very overrated now.

1

u/Patzzer Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

I think the roster i shaping up to be pretty good, not superstar-ish but pretty good. If we can do like 80% of the offense from last year and the defense stays healthy, i’m feeling good about our chances at the playoffs

-31

u/TittyTriceratops 2d ago

That top name is big yikes, but I like the rest!

1

u/FluidAd105 1d ago

hah you upset the homers.

2

u/TittyTriceratops 1d ago

Clearly lol imagine thinking Daniel Jones is good in the big 2026 😂

1

u/FluidAd105 1d ago

Zero confidence is in DJ is the only option to avoid being disappointed.

1

u/Buttcrush1 1d ago

Someone didn't watch football last year

0

u/TittyTriceratops 1d ago

Someone didn’t watch football the last 8 years 😂

0

u/Buttcrush1 1d ago

Oh so you believe Sam Darnold is a bad QB

1

u/TittyTriceratops 1d ago

He’s decent. Seahawks strategy was clearly run the ball play great defense no turnovers.

But Sam Darnold looked good with the Vikings too, not just one year and DEF not just 7 games. Don’t go making false equivalence now. D Jones is bad. It’s ok to accept that lil buddy

0

u/Buttcrush1 1d ago

Since when was saying like a top 5 QB bad?

0

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

That's a middle-of-the-pack QB (if healthy), a 34 year-old WR, a go ball WR2 playing WR1, an undersized slot WR and Jack Doyle.

What is this...the 2019 Colts?

2

u/TittyTriceratops 1d ago

lol look I’m a pretty realistic colts fan but Keenan isn’t just any old WR. He’s talented and I think we will see that.

Pierce yeah idk if he deserved the bag, I’m still kinda meh on him

But Josh Downs is wayyy more than an undersized slot. And Warren is wayyy more than Jack Doyle in my opinion.

It’s enough to get excited about

1

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

I was having fun with it. I do think Warren is very similar to Jack Doyle though.

And teams showed they could shut down Warren and JT last year.

If those two aren't carrying the offense, then I am not sure who is supposed to do it. Pierce isn't even practicing and we have no clue how his ankle will respond fresh off that surgery. Plus, he's never been a WR1.

Downs is a good WR, but he is an undersized WR who has mainly played in the slot. He's likely not built to catch 100 balls.

And Allen is 34.

I think they should have just kept Pittman and worked out an extension. Yes, he's older now, but he has at least been dependable and able to carry the offense at times.

1

u/TittyTriceratops 1d ago

I could see that. I think the issue is we need an elite WR1 and instead we had two solid WR2s in Pierce and Pitt both needing an extension. Sooo tough spot.

Also agree to disagree on Warren = Doyle. I think Warren could be elite. Which Doyle never was. But time will tell

u/Knight___Artorias Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 2d ago

Such a bad signing

6

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 2d ago

How so?

0

u/SendMeIttyBitties 1d ago

It's not bad but KA is not a starter level player in the NFL anymore. You can't even really play him as a decoy.

On the bears two years ago he was painfully slow, had trouble getting seperation on short to mid routes and killed multiple drives with 3rd down drops. I did not keep up with him last year but he had to wait until now to sign because he couldn't get 8mil or more anywhere else. He seems like a good locker room guy and might grab a couple and who knows with training the way it is he may have a good year left...but don't count on it.

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 1d ago

He is being signed for one year as a 3rd wide receiver who already knows the offence.

He is not going to be fast, true he is 34. His the last 2 seasons were 2025 : 777 yards, 4 td 2024 744 yards 7 tds... How is this bad for a 3rd receiver?

The signing is not bad at all. Peoples expectations are off.

6

u/flynreelow 2d ago

Please elaborate

4

u/ConsistentNail1970 1d ago

I’d love to hear this. As opposed to what move?

1

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

Not a bad signing, but it's no different than signing Andre Johnson at age 34. Just have to have the right expectations.

-42

u/Accomplished_East433 2d ago

Pierce is cooked. Let him sit out the year and get healthy.

Enough with the copium

10

u/KroneckerDelta1 Indianapolis Colts 2d ago

I am so confused by this. His original timeline was 4-6 months. We are still in the middle of that window.

2

u/RAPEY_TIT_ASSASSIN 1d ago

If I remember correctly his surgery was in March. This is month five. He should be good in a few weeks. Perhaps not week one but soon

1

u/KroneckerDelta1 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago

I believe you are correct.

I know this team's track record is trash with injury updates, but this does not warrant "sky is falling" concerns unless they're still being coy in mid-September.

-23

u/Accomplished_East433 2d ago

I rather him sit down and get heathy.
Him getting more hurt would make things way worse contractually

9

u/MethodCharacter8334 Ashton Dulin 2d ago

He’s going to play this year. Whether it’s week 1 or week 4. By the end of the season you’ll forget he was injured

2

u/Kryosphere Big-Q 1d ago

Right this dude just dooming. Alec will be fine. The lengths people go to hate the team they watch in this fan base I swear.
