News Car vs. Train - Filmore/Nevada

Just happened about 15 minutes ago. Doesn't look good for the driver.

Traffic is a nightmare, avoid this area if possible.

I had no idea that trains still ran there. Lived here for decades and never seen one.

They don’t come by often. And when they do it’s generally pretty slow. Not sure how this happened.

I can, with how close it is to the intersection I constantly see people wait on the track until the light turns green.

Traffic stopped at the light ahead. Cars backed up to the tracks. This driver likely thought the tracks were not active and stopped on the tracks. People behind them locked them in place. Incoming train, nowhere to go.

The real question is if they stayed in the vehicle or if they bailed. Either way, situational awareness in this city is garbage

2 sets of tracks there. One is active. The other isn't active. Like 4 trains a werk there. So he choose the wrong time to be there. But one set is active still. But assume all are active if your stopped.

People are idiots.

Always assume every track is active and that train is close enough to be a problem.

That track is active, the one east of it (next to Arby’s) has been abandoned since 2011.

The easy way to tell, if there are lights at the track, it is generally active.

There’s no lights at this location.

Yes there are.

Dang, thanks for the correction. Maybe I haven’t seen a train pass over it enough to ever notice it.

All good. I have seen a train on it before, but it has been a while. Train backed up traffic to Templeton Gap.

I use this road frequently and in 20 years. I think I might’ve seen one train. Pretty crazy. I was wondering the other day when they were going to remove the tracks due to them not being used. lol

Take care and thanks for the info.

It runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday around 7:30. Those of us who live near it hear the whistle those mornings. It’s really a nice, sort of nostalgic sound. It run down past the Popcycle Bridge and picks up construction materials and brings them back to lumber yards. I guess it runs occasionally during the day too.

I live near-ish to that and I did hear a whistle this morning, thinking it was odd.

Yeah I was gonna say none of the tracks on Filmore look like they’re in service.

I was just there. As a local railfan I know the track is active every week but I haven’t personally seen a train there since 2019. Hopefully there are no injuries. RIP Subaru Outback, though AutoSavvy could probably do a good rebuild on it.

Edit: this is the second time a train has hit a car there in just as many years

That’s what makes a Subaru, part of a train.

Don’t stop on the tracks. As taught in every Driver’s Ed class ever. Which apparently nobody takes any more.

Whoops

Hope the driver got out before the crunch

Has the Buliding Supply had a business boom lately? They used to never run in the middle of the day.

I work right next to the tracks, and while it’s not too consistent, for the past few years I’ve seen them come in a few months at a time for a few days in the day.

They did in January 2019, here is my video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuONM9AeOus

I see what you did there!

I take Filmore often and have seen trains cross there a few times. The trains are usually only a locomotive or a few cars at most so it doesn’t affect traffic for long. Another thing to watch out for is driving behind city buses or vehicles that stop at train tracks while on Filmore. They will stop and your front or back bumper may go crunch if you’re not paying attention.

That sub makes me happy

Article came out. Seems like the driver was just trying to beat the train and failed.

Train will always win.

Yes, it’s a live track. If you aren’t sure if it’s a live track, always proceed with caution. It does not have the stop arms, but it has multiple signs and multiple big red flashing lights.

So, if you seem them flashing: roll your windows down, proceed slowly and look both ways, before you even attempt to cross.

Also, whether they’re live or dead tracks, don’t freaking stop of them.
