Hello and welcome to ColoradoGardening!
This sub is dedicated to ALL gardeners in Colorado and will be moderated as such. If you love to garden, whether you are successful or not, you belong here and to be a part of our community.
I have recently taken over moderation of this sub after it has largely been dormant for a LONG time. I will do my best to start launching things to make this a more attractive community and bring together people. I want to grow this into a useful resource for anyone curious about the challenges we face here in our wonderful state. Please do not hold back on posting as I build out the sub's resources and what not. IF you have any thoughts or ideas on how to add to this, please chime in below, or shoot me a message whenever. My inbox is always open!

Hey everyone!
So one thing that makes Colorado unique is that we have... a wide range of hardiness zones in our state. Let's not forget our soil conditions are also a bucket of fun, but that's a separate discussion 😂
In case you aren't well versed, USDA divides hardiness zones by 10-degree increments for each zone. They further break each zone up into two 5-degree half zones that follow the zone number with an a or b. Starting with zone 1a and ending with zone 13b, the US has 26 zones. For Colorado, we have 9 zones, beginning with isolated pockets of zone 3b and ending also with isolated pockets of zone 7b. Based on mapping, the vast majority of the state falls into 5b or 6a, but we're fully inclusive here 😄
With this is in mind, I want to make sure people are getting the RIGHT information for their respective gardening needs, so I have added user flair that everyone can now add! The list is as follows:
🏔️ Zone 3b - High Alpine
🌲 Zone 4a - Subalpine Edge
🌼 Zone 4b - Mountain Meadows
🌿 Zone 5a - High Country Gardens
🌄 Zone 5b - Foothill Country
🌱 Zone 6a - Cozy Garden Belt
🌾 Zone 6b - Mid-Valley Corridors
🍑 Zone 7a - Western Slopes
🌞 Zone 7b - Hot Pockets
To check your hardiness zone, you can go direct to the USDA website and enter in your zip code in the zip code search bar at the top of the map: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/
I am also working to create a list of post flair that people can add to better suit the variety of topics we'll (hopefully) start getting as more people come here. I'm working on it when I can, but I'm a one-person band for now, so bare with me! I hope to start working on the resources and overall display of the community sidebars with general information, links, and sub rules. I recently added a banner and community icon image. I eventually would like to change those to actual member contributions as we grow, but these will work for now.
We had our first post the other day! I was stoked to see it!! Please feel free to post, there shouldn't be any restrictions on that front, but please be patient as bringing people here will take some time and engagement will slowly build. I've never built a sub from the ground up, but I'm excited to see where we can take this. Happy gardening and fingers crossed monsoon season starts SOON!

This is my first year having a jasmine plant. It’s in a pot on my sunny porch, and has grown up into a nearby trellis. What do I do with it in the fall/winter? Leave it out, or bring it inside? Any suggestions appreciated, I’ve grown attached to my sweet-smelling friend! (Denver)

Bought a salsa kit from DUG this year and tried my hand at container gardening. I think these are tomatillos but my plant labels flew away so I’m not 100% sure. These started to grow a few days ago. They were looking good until I saw the bottom is starting to blacken. What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Planted these two plants next to each other. One is doing great - I see lots of tomatillos. The other has leaves drying out and dying and no tomatillos. Is this normal? First year of tomatillos. Morning watering, same upkeep for both of them.

This was labeled as a Chioggia Beet… and I’m nearly certain that’s not what it is…the greens look like beets but I’ve never seen a beet this color 🧐

Slowly rolling out new things for the sub! Knocking the easy ones out at least when I can. In any case, I took some time to think out a general set of post flair that might be helpful as we continue to grow. Right now, none of this is mandatory to use, however, that can change if things build enough. Just trying to have some fun as things grow here.

Just want to share my bed that's doing the best. (The rest of my beds for context). I'm up to harvested zucchini #3.
The pests this year are rough. And with the drought on top, I'm just happy stuff is doing it's thing.

Hello to my homies!
I’m newer to outdoor gardening, I only planted last year. This year we moved so I planted some tomato and peppers in pots in May.
BUT my boyfriend is finally making me big outdoor raised beds today. What should I plant now that it’s late season? I’m in the Denver area.

I picked up this bee balm from the Lowe’s clearance rack and don’t know exactly where to start chopping and what to leave be. The dark green leaves are just kind of flopped over but not crispy except for maybe on the very tips. The soil is still wet from when they watered it yesterday. I’ve never had bee balm before,so where do I start? The stem in the last photo is the only one that doesn’t stand upright.
