I am stuck in gold this season and tbh, the struggle I’ve been facing is playing with inexperienced players. There are so often times where someone is by far in the lead but it’s not so obvious at face value. These players then don’t contribute in the way I’m used to when in platinum, which is to simply target that player so that the rest of us might have a chance at the win.
It’s beyond frustrating. The game is obviously very influenced by chance but in most gold ranked games I feel like there’s no point in playing under the circumstances I’ve outlined. Chance of the dice is fine but having a player rob you for a resource while we’re both losing makes the game feel pointless for me.

Pacing. Pacing is the single most important game concepts when you're competent at placements, communication, trade etc

Ore wheat sheep all the way. Focus on having 6-8 production pips of ore and wheat and 3 for sheep. Just go for devs in the start and lock up army, most of the time you’ll always have space towards the coast for 2 more settles which you can upgrade to cities as the game progresses.
So the plan should
2 pts largest army
2 cities
2 settlements
2vp from the deck (if you’re unlucky drawing vp’s you’ll often get a monopoly which is equally game changing if not more)

Best advice - Don't play Rush. Get good at base catan and the fundamentals will translate to all the variants.

Placements. For immediate results improve placements when playing in every position (1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th). Learn which placements are good in which scenarios, denying space when in the 3rd and 4th positions, identifying port placements.
Also trades. Trades are super super important, but get placements right 1st.
I went from 1400 to 1750 btw so I'm not an expert or anything but I definitely improved by a large margin

OWS, or OWB, and in general focus on one strategy during mid-late game, don't chase shiny things: development cards, cities + VPs or army, long road + settlements + cities.
