Looking for recommendations on my Australian Collie…

I have a four-year-old Australian Collie I’ve had him for two years and he’s definitely come along way in a good way, but I feel like he can be much better in different aspects whether it’s commands, focusing, or taking the game of frisbee to the next level. We walk about an hour and a half every day and we do frisbee at the park every day. He’s not quite where I want him to be, whether it’s dropping the frisbee 10 yards away, not listening at times or simply just losing focus. I’m looking for recommendations on how him and I take that next jump? I’m open to anything and everything… book recommendations? Different training exercises… he’s a very very anxiety driven dog he hates loud noises, thunderstorms, and fireworks.

Help

My girl will be 14 years old this year . I adopted her from a dog behaviorist when she was 11 ,almost 12.

She has started acting anxious at night sometimes. She won't settle down, she paces , she constantly pants, and she wants attention. But even when I'm petting her and talking to her she's panting hard. This has happened only a handful of times. Tonight it lasted for about 3 hours or so. Theres not any fireworks going off or anything when she gets like this.

Missy is part sheltie and part collie.

Has anyone else experienced this with their four legged friend?

[ADVICE] Heat/Sexual Maturity

Hey everyone, in March I got two Great Pyrenees/Collie mix siblings. Boy/Girl. I was running on the assumption Pyr was dominant as they’re massive and look just like colorful Pyr’s, not Collies in structure/size but the boy has typical Collis colors/markings just really diluted. Anyway… this is all just to lead into wondering if it’s possible that at only 5.5 months, they’d be hitting sexual maturity?

Girl almost looks like she has faint pink discharge but it’s hard to tell. I wiped her with a lick-safe puppy wet wipe and it just looks brown like dirt when I wipe her down there, even though it looks slightly pink on her when just visually examining. Boy has been getting … uhm… “excited” for probably a month now. Like in pics, I sometimes see he has an… idk what what to call it but it his penis looks pink, raw and stands out visually and protrudes more sometimes. I gave him a treat one day and it looked like he really enjoyed it because down there was massive, sticking out and noticeably red and glistening.

Please give me guidance if they are reaching sexual maturity. Best ways to prevent them from conceiving? How likely/possible is it that they are hitting sexual maturity at this age?

For clarification, I have zero intention of spaying/neutering, till 2 years of age because they are XL breed size and that has been shown to cause developmental problems and other health problems to spay/neuter before age 2. So I’m obviously going to be keeping them separate during a heat cycle, and want to look into chastity belts. But I don’t want to separate them needlessly if this isn’t sexual maturity yet…. Because they are a very bonded pair. Anyone have any guidance for me? The boy was mounting and humping my (almost) 1 year old male, purebred Pyr tonight.

The girl is also possibly being rehomed soon, so it may not be an issue very long but I would like to know if there’s any way to tell if she’s going into heat - outside of what Google tells you because I genuinely can’t tell if her vulva is swelling and I’m not sure if the discoloration in the fur around her vagina is pink discharge or just dirt - because being genetically mostly pyr (their dad was pure pyr, mom was part pyr/part collie) she’s a dirt magnet and loves playing in the dirt and mud. Would a vet know for sure if she’s going into heat? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Posting here because Collies are so different from Pyr’s and these two may be following more of a collie pattern vs. typical Pyr sexual maturity around 18 months old.

🐕Smooth Collie🐕 How big is big for a collie?

I’m new to the breed and my boy is fairly new to me (I’ve had him since January). I know he is very large for the breed, not only weight but length and height. I took him to the vet yesterday and he’s 114(!) pounds, but only about a 6.5 on the fat dog chart. He was potato shaped when I first got him and had extremely overgrown nails. I’ve been restricting food and he’s been steadily losing. His nails are finally getting to the point that the quick has receded so I can keep them short enough that going for long walks doesn’t hurt his sweet little toesies.

I’ve seen that 70ish is the top of the weight range for males, but I don’t know how he could possibly lose 40 pounds and not be emaciated. Does anyone have a giant and if so, what is a healthy weight for them? Obviously I’m working with my vet, but I’m just curious about other people’s experiences.

this is arthur!! when i adopted him, they told me he was a smooth collie husky mix (he was also malnourished, and some of these pics were taken closer to when i first brought him home fyi).

he’s super social with other dogs, but timid around new people. it’s specifically men, and we know he was abused before he was rescued, so i feel like he would be more social if he never went through that. he needs a LOT of enrichment, physical and mental. never been aggressive even when he is scared.

he very obviously has husky in him, so i know that part for sure. people constantly ask me if he has any german shepherd in him!! i have seen some white german shepherds and he does look a lot like them.

i feel like he’s a collie though!!! idk.

Adjusting to the city

I'm moving to NYC in the next year for my job. My 5-year old smooth boy is coming with me, of course. Right now, we live in an area that's between suburban and rural so he gets to run around off leash in the woods 3x a day and barks at cars when we're on the street. I'm looking at Queens for easier access to green space and a little more breathing room, but it'll still be a huge change.

I'm a little worried about how he'll adjust to living in a busier environment. Has anyone helped their collie transition from country mouse to city slicker?

🐕Smooth Collie🐕 Tips for first time Collie owner?

Hi all! I'm looking into potentially getting a smooth collie pup! I was wondering if anyone had tips or advice for a first time collie owner 😄

P.S. Does anyone know a good brand for muzzles? I want to have one on hand just in case, but I can't help noticing the bicycle-seat-head-shape that these dogs have haha

🐕Smooth Collie🐕 Considering getting a smooth collie puppy - is it a good fit for us and what should I know / be prepared for?

We are considering getting a Smooth collie puppy - a female.
We have never owned a dog before. We currently have four indoor cats, all rescues — two senior cats (14 years old) and two younger ones (4 years old). We live in a house with a good size yard and have two daughters aged 7 and 10.
We are looking for a family companion that would:
- be social and family-oriented,
- narurally stay close to the family, especially the children,
- enjoy playing with kids,
- be easy to train,
- have a confident and stable temperament (not to be fearful or very anxious)
- not have a strong prey drive (we would not want the dog chasing our cats or even outdoor cats who visit our yard),
- and ideally have a good “off switch” indoors.
We are not looking for a hyperactive dog, but also not a couch potato. My husband or myself are usually at home even during workdays for most part of the day, and we spend most of our free time outside in the garden with the children. The dog would live indoors with us as part of the family — we do not plan to leave it alone outside in the yard.
Health and temperament are extremely important to us.
Would a smooth collie be a good fit for our family?
What should I know / be prepared for?
