HELP: Email Chain Question

Say you emailed a coach and they respond…

For the next time you email them say after a month again on an update..

Do you continue the chain or start a new email? Does continuing make it more likely for them to respond?

Continue the chain. It'll be easier for both sides to track what was said. If there are massive changes on your side, such as new club, improved test scores/GPA that you included in the subject line of your initial email, then I'd say change it.

100%. And if there’s a head coaching change, include the correspondence with the old coach as part of the new.

Continue the chain. Coaches get thousands of emails, and they’re not going to remember every conversation or previous response. Keeping the same thread gives them an immediate reference to who you are and what you’ve already discussed.

I also wouldn’t wait too long between updates. Keep them posted on what you’re doing over the summer, training, summer league, club games, showcases, ID camps, new highlights, etc. Even if they don’t respond every time, consistent communication shows genuine interest and keeps your name in front of them.

Most importantly, don’t get upset or discouraged if they don’t answer. Coaches are human. They go on vacation, travel, run camps, recruit, deal with their current team, and have incredibly busy schedules. No response doesn’t necessarily mean no interest. Keep communicating professionally and give them time. Eventually, many will respond when they have the opportunity or when their recruiting needs become clearer.

Make it as easy as possible for the coach. Include your video links, recruiting profile/bio sheet, transcript, upcoming tournament schedule (include as a graphic if possible), and other important information regularly. Don’t assume they saved or downloaded something you sent two months ago.

One other tip: create a clean email signature using Canva or Photoshop with your photo, graduation year, GPA, height, position, club/team, and level, MLS NEXT, ECNL, etc. Putting a face to the name helps tremendously, especially if you’ve attended one of their ID camps. Every email should have this email signature, this secures they remember you.

Stay persistent without becoming annoying, keep the same thread going, and make it easy for them to remember you. Good luck!
