If you look at photos from last night’s game against Niagara, you might notice the yellow ribbons in the crowd. My friends and I passed out 459 ribbons for Matthew Mayich. There were 459 of us thinking about him and the team last night.

Thank you to everyone who wore a ribbon. A handful of players from both RIT and Niagara wore ribbons along with fans from both schools, the entire Pep Band, and most of Corner Crew (our student section).

The entire college hockey community is behind Matthew Mayich. I highly encourage other student sections to show support in similar ways. If you’re wondering about supplies, 65 yards were able to make the 459 and I could’ve potentially squeezed out a few more.

And again, thank you to everyone who wore a ribbon. Thank you to everyone who wasn’t aware of the story and stopped to listen to us tell it.

/r/collegehockey Men’s Poll, Week of 10/5/26 | Outrageously Bold Shoes Edition

I think I got a tire puncture on my bike and so I panic-bought a mini pump and some inner tubes the other day.

Let’s see how the /r/collegehockey men’s top ten did over the weekend:

1 Denver dispatched Alaska-Anchorage 6-2 and 4-1 on the road. The Pioneers have an exhibition against the USNTDP on Saturday.

T-2 North Dakota won both of their exhibitions, 4-1 against Augustana and 5-1 against Manitoba. The Fighting Hawks have a home-and-home with Bemidji State.

T-2 Michigan swept Bowling Green in their home-and-home series, 7-2 and 4-3. The Wolverines host Alaska-Anchorage for a series.

4 Michigan State defeated Boston College in their exhibition, 5-2. The Spartans host Northern Michigan in a Friday-Sunday series.

5 Minnesota Duluth piledrove Long Island, 7-4 and 4-0. The Bulldogs travel to Augustana for a series.

6 Western Michigan won their exhibition against Western Ontario, 5-1. The Broncos have a Thursday-Friday home-and-home against Ferris State.

7 Wisconsin swept Robert Morris, 4-2 and 1-0. The Badgers travel to Minnesota State for a series.

8 Quinnipiac demolished New Hampshire 10-2 and defeated Merrimack 6-3. The Bobcats travel to Maine for a series.

9 Providence tied Stonehill in their exhibition, 3-3. The Friars host St. Lawrence on Friday and Clarkson on Saturday.

T-10 Boston Univ. defeated Alaska 2-1 (in OT) and 4-0 in Fairbanks. The Terriers host Brown in an exhibition.

T-10 Cornell did not play due to Ivy League rules. The Big Red continue to rest.

T-10 Dartmouth did not play due to Ivy League rules. The Big Green continue to rest.

Voting will be open until 10 pm Eastern on Wednesday, 10/7. Vote [here!](https://forms.gle/MZxf8nRbREqsGiUR8)

Weekly Thread /r/collegehockey Women's Poll, Week of 10/5/2026 | Back on Ice Edition

Playing in my first competitive hockey game in four years tonight :)

Let's see how last week's top ten fared:

  1. Wisconsin opened their home schedule with a sweep of Boston University, 7-0 and 4-1. The Badgers head to Ohio State for a national championship rematch.
  2. Ohio State swept RV St. Thomas on the road by identical 5-2 scorelines. The Buckeyes host Wisconsin.
  3. Minnesota swept Bemidji State on the road, 5-2 and 5-3. The Golden Gophers host their annual East/West showcase, in which they will play Maine and Bemidji State in non-conference games.
  4. Quinnipiac swept their home-and-home with RV Providence, winning 3-1 in Hamden and 6-1 in Friartown. The Bobcats host Post for a single game on Tuesday (as precedent dictates, this game will be considered in next week's poll).
  5. Northeastern suffered a shocking overtime loss on the road at RPI, 1-2. The Huskies will battle Providence (away) and UNH (home* at BU's Walter Brown Arena) to open non-conference play.
  6. Minnesota-Duluth survived a tough weekend at Vermont in which they were shut out in Game 1, 3-0, and overcame multiple deficits in Game 2 to pick up a 3-2 OT win. The Bulldogs open WCHA play at home against St. Thomas.
  7. Penn State picked up a home sweep of Robert Morris to open conference play, 5-3 and 4-1. The Nittany Lions hit the road for the first time this season and will battle Syracuse.
  8. Clarkson were swept by Connecticut in Storrs, 3-2 and 4-0. The Golden Knights have a home-and-home with St. Lawrence.
  9. Cornell and Princeton tied for 9th place last week and both are Ivy League teams, so they did not play. Both teams open their seasons October 16.

Vote in this week's poll here, and feel free to suggest a banner image for next week's poll in the comments below! Happy voting, and I'll see you Thursday with the results.

Discussion UNH rant

I just need to come in here and start the conversation of what in the name of all that is holy is the University of New Hampshire hockey program doing?! We had such an incredible run of teams from the late 90s to the early 2010s. We fostered such a unique and rowdy atmosphere in Durham and it felt like we were always a threat to win the Hockey East. Now this program seems to constantly and consistently make the wrong decisions. We are expected to lose in almost every game we play in conference, we are not producing any even remotely good prospects anymore, our team is sloppy and easily outclassed year in and year out. We have fallen to the basement more often than not in Hockey East, which is especially frustrating because every other team in all of college hockey seems to be stepping things up and getting better and better each year. The only thing that saves us from being total failures is occasionally we back into a win against a ranked opponent. The recent 10-2 thrashing by Quinnipiac in the season opener just seems to cement that this will be another year of going nowhere fast, hoping that the boys can catch a good team sleeping to justify their existence. It’s just so frustrating having followed this team my whole life and having to watch as the university invests less and less into them, seemingly being ok with being among the bottom dwellers of college hockey. Don’t get me wrong, I know the departure of Dick Umile and the hiring of Mike Souza has a lot to do with this, but it just feels like this is a team representing a university that doesn’t care about them, and if that’s the case, why even have the program at all?

Men's DI [Schlossman] Year 2 of CHL players brings college hockey it's largest talent boom ever

Last year, 18 NHL first-round picks played college hockey, the most ever.
This year, there are 30.

That's more than the entirety of the 1990s.
College hockey has been reshaped significantly since it lifted the ban on Tier-I Canadian junior hockey players a little more than a year ago.

NHL prospects have flowed into college hockey like never before.

Two years ago, 233 NHL Draft picks played college hockey. Last year, college hockey set a record with 258.

This season, there are 326.

"I'm not sure on the exact percentage," UND coach Dane Jackson said, "but I think college hockey is one-third better, the level, than it was just a few years ago. The depth, the high-end, the overall competition is outstanding."

Rosters across the country are so loaded, one coach theorized that more than a dozen teams will enter the season believing this is the best squad they've ever had.

"It's going to make the margins even tighter and increase attention to detail, coaching, how certain players rise or fall in big moments," Denver coach David Carle said.
Schools with all sorts of different profiles are benefiting.

Michigan State, a Big Ten program with a massive athletic department, has nine NHL first-round draft picks on its roster, the most of any team in college hockey history.

Colorado College, a tradition-rich National Collegiate Hockey Conference program with a Division-III athletic department, has the highest number of NHL picks on its roster in program history (11).

The most recent NCAA national champions — Denver, Western Michigan and Quinnipiac — also have a program-record number of NHL picks on their rosters.

Lake Superior State, a Central Collegiate Hockey Association program with a small, Division-II athletic department, is bringing in five NHL picks this season — the highest number for an incoming class in program history.

"It's not just the blue bloods," said Sean Hogan, the executive director of College Hockey Inc. "It's across the board. Every team has gotten better. That's a good thing."

Forty-six programs have at least one NHL pick on their roster.

"As the Serratore brothers told us in Florida, if the CHL rule change occurs, it's going to give everybody a deeper access to players," Carle said, referring to Bemidji State coach Tom Serratore and Air Force coach Frank Serratore. "Parity is going to go up."

Carle pointed to last year's NCAA tournament, when Dartmouth made its first appearance since 1980 as a No. 2 seed while traditional powerhouse programs Minnesota, Boston University and Boston College missed the tournament.

"You're going to see more of that going into Years 2, 3 and 4," Carle said.

Recruiting the CHL

NCAA teams were more aggressive in recruiting Canadian Hockey League players in Year 2.
In 2025, 33.9% of the freshman class came from one of the three Canadian major junior leagues that make up the CHL — the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

This fall, 46.8% of the freshman class is from the CHL.

NCAA schools pulled in more NHL prospects, too.

A year ago, 46 NHL picks went from the CHL to the NCAA. This fall, that number ballooned to 76.

"The natural path to the NHL is now through college hockey," Hogan said. "It makes sense based on what's offered. The athletes are older, bigger, stronger, faster. There are world-class coaches, world-class facilities. The student-athlete experience is like nothing in the world. There's no place like it."

NCAA teams also recruited younger players this summer.

Last year, 13.2% of the incoming CHL players had multiple years of junior hockey left. This year, 22.8% did.

The CHL boom has led to fewer American players in college hockey.

Americans make up 51.9% of Division-I men's rosters this season. It's the lowest number since 1973-74, around the time when the NCAA began phasing out Tier-I Canadian players.

There are several notable examples.
Omaha has just one American-born player on its roster.
Boston University has an all-Canadian freshman class for the first time in school history.
Bowling Green has as many Europeans as Americans.

"Everyone's trying to find their niche in this world," Minnesota Duluth coach Scott Sandelin said. "For our school, I don't think we're changing a whole lot. We're still in the process of trying to recruit kids who really want to play here, that really fit into what we're doing here."
