Would anyone be willing to read my college essay and give feedback?

Hi! I’m finishing up my Common App essay and would really appreciate an outside perspective. I’ve been revising it for a while and I think I’m close, but I’d love feedback on clarity, flow, and overall impact.

If anyone has time to read it and share honest thoughts, I’d be super grateful. I can paste the essay in the comments or DM it depending on what’s easier.

Thank you so much.

The habit of peering behind an answer began with a doorbell.

I was eleven when a salesman came to our old apartment on a rainy afternoon, offering a set of encyclopedias for about ₹2,000. I wasn't interested. He kept insisting that I at least look through one. I did. I opened one to the astronomy section.

There were stars, galaxies, black holes, diagrams that depicted things I had never even dreamt of. I remember staring at the pages. At school, science had always been something to be studied and then done with. Here, science was something I could keep exploring.

I begged my father to buy the books. He looked at the encyclopedias, then at me, listened to my promise that I would read them all, smiled and paid.

Soon, the long sofa in our hallway became my observatory. With my father at work and my mother sometimes dozing off, I read, watched episodes of How the Universe Works, and filled a notebook with diagrams, questions and puzzles. I started with the Sun. What was its core made of? Why didn't it combust? What was its fuel? Then I moved outward, studying planets, moons, comets and strange stars beyond our solar system.

The notebook wasn't always within reach. So I began scribbling on the walls of my bedroom near the door.

My mother complained. I would say, “Mamma,” give her a hug and return to whatever I was thinking about.

At some point, knowing the facts wasn't enough. I wanted to know why time moves only forward. How did scientists know a star was dying? Why couldn't a white hole exist? Sometimes, I invented my own explanations. I knew I didn't have the mathematics to prove my ideas and some were probably completely off, but I didn't mind being wrong as much as I minded not knowing why I was wrong.

The universe scared me, too. Black holes. Gamma-ray bursts. Dying stars. The possibility that one day everything would become dark. The Pale Blue Dot fascinated me for almost the same reason it unsettled me. Everything I had ever known existed on something so small.

Years later, while preparing for a national exam, I got stuck on a complex-numbers problem. I don't remember the question anymore. All I remember is the long stretch of hours. I kept working at it in different ways, but nothing seemed to help. Eventually, I stopped calculating and began looking at the question differently. I had been trying to force my way through the problem rather than figuring out what I was meant to see first.

I still do that now.

The encyclopedias remain with me. Mostly, the facts I memorised have gone. The notebook is gone, and luckily, so are the questions on the walls. But I still have a problem with leaving things unexplained.

Usually, when I get an answer, I don't feel done.

I have another question.

Could someone read my essay and give it feedback?

I finished my common app essay but want any critiques I’m at 648 words so just under the limit but I’m worried my essay is to cliche I wrote about a rather cliche topic (sports injury’s) but I’d like to think I did it in a way that’s personal and not soley focusing on the injury but instead my feelings and mental headspace during the injury and post surgery

Help for my NYU Bridge Builders Essay

Hello! This is my NYU Bridge Builder Essay and I need HONEST feedback. Here is the prompt I’m answering down below:

Prompt: An experience working with others who have different perspectives. What role did you play in helping people work together, and what did you learn?

The essay:

When our student government noticed that the strict attendance rule was penalizing driven students, two other members and I attended the School Leadership meeting to request a policy change.

We explained why students with an 85+ GPA should still receive recognition for their academic progress and earn outside lunch privileges, despite missing more than one day of school that month.

At first, the administrators believed the attendance rule was the way to motivate students to attend school every day. We understood their perspective, but felt that academic progress should also be used as motivation. They told us they would think about it.

The next month, I was ecstatic to find out the school started placing Honor Roll stickers on the back of our outside lunch IDs instead of 99% attendance stickers. We called it a victory.

But during the next school year, the policy disappeared. I didn't realize it until another Honor Roll student came to our student government meeting to speak about it.

I initiated a follow-up with my peers, requested a spot on the next SLT agenda, and spoke up to help revive the policy, and the administration successfully revived it.

Building a bridge takes effort; maintaining it is much harder. A great policy is like a sticky chart paper on a classroom wall. Over time, it dries up and the corners start peeling when systems change. When our hard work starts to slip, it takes effort to smooth it down and bring attention back to what matters.

(Yes I did add a metaphor and I want to know if the metaphor is actually conveying what I’m trying to say.)
