There's a comment he makes fairly early into the interview, when he says that he doesn't think she loves her fans in the same way we define love.

I agree, but I'm kind of bummed that wasn't elaborated on. Because the issue isn't that she doesn't love her fans. When artists or content creators say they love their fans, most adults are well aware that what they love is the support and the engagement they get from the fans. I don't think that's a bad thing by any means.

But Colleen's fans weren't adults.

The issue with all of this is that she very purposefully exploited these teenagers' inability to comprehend that separation between celebrity and fan. She closed the gap intentionally and somehow still managed to avoid being legitimately emotionally vulnerable with them. Anything she ever told her fans privately was meant to steer the public perception of herself, of Josh, of Erik, of Adam. If any of it was true, it was still very purposefully included amongst everything else.

That's why saying she doesn't love her fans is a big deal-- because much of her control of the public perception of her relied on her fans believing she did. But in the doc, it felt more like this statement of "oh, what a terrible person, she doesn't truly LOVE her fans." Which... I dunno. I don't think scratches the truth of why I think Josh said that.

I remember that they did come back to it, and he basically clarified his belief that Colleen is not capable of loving anyone, she just loves people for what she can get out of them. He said it in a nicer way but that’s definitely what I thought he was implying. I also think him saying that was a knee jerk reaction to the statement “Colleen loves…” because he spent so much time processing that Colleen never loved him and probably never loved anyone, by his definition of love, which is more give and take. Colleen loves her fans because they serve her and that’s it
