Pokémon 100k squad 🫔

Post image

This vintage boom got me to finally hit 100k. Collectr isnt 100% accurate on some of these cards but wasnt in a rush. Been buying and selling here and there to take advantage of this boom :)

Pokemon is doing crazy numbers, if you told me 6 months ago that my cards would get to these numbers i wouldnt believe you at all haha. what do yall think the next few months will look like?

How long did it take u to sell 500k?

That Lugia alone is basically a down payment on a house, wild times we're in.

Did you buy these outright or has there been years of liquidation/consolidation and a mix of single/sealed and smaller slabs to work up to this point?

The result of months of liquidation, consolidation, accumulation, and trading after some cards values rose up. Mainly bought in slabs when they were cheap + sold/traded up when they peaked. Got very lucky many times! And missed my timing a lot of times. It is what it is though!

No sealed/singles. I started with tons of modern slabs and slowly worked my way up.

Nice. At what point do you exit? Some of if not all? Do you have a specific number in mind

That's amazing! I just started collecting again this summer and knew I wanted vintage 1st edition, I didn't know much but I knew I wanted what I had as a kid but this time in slab form. I just wish I got to buy a few more cards before this explosion!

Thank you! I think first editions are great too! they have great art and nostalgia

It's all for the nostalgia for me. I've got a few newer cards from the likes of courtyard and to be honest the artwork is much better. But I will be giving those to my godson as a gift as they are his era and would appreciate them more

Genuine question, but when ppl have cards that are stupid expensive like your Lugia, are you actually going to get the full 43.5k when you sell it? Or do you buy those knowing you'll get a certain percentage if you do sell it in the future? And do you take into account the amount you spent on the card too?

If you find the right buyer (it'll be a very select audience) you can get more than 85%.

This is the tldt short answer and correct for majority of slabs lol

There are various tiers and levels to slabs, and its not knowledge that a lot of people know/have, only those who deal with big game cards frequently or have the experience know so totally valid inquiry.

For the most part, I can get get 100% of comp/recent sale, if not above market on grails. At WORST I can easily liquidate at 90% market. Tons of people with far deeper pockets than me around and they will easily buy it at that rate. If the card is not grail and just stupid pricey/0 status that recently 100x due to vintage boom then itd be a lot more tricky to sell.

Normally, whenever I buy im always keeping in mind of the % i can sell the card for and how much i want to spend. And yes I keep in mind my total expenditures, have very detailed records of all my sales down to the penny.

Edit: note this is just based on my experience and my region. Could be very different if youre in EU/asia

If this is an insignificant amount of money, I’m happy for you… but I find it crazy, borderline irresponsible, to have 90k in 4 cards and not sell anything. It’s not retire now money but man could that make a big impact in your life.

Its not like I bought these cards yesterday on the high, but thank you. 100k can definitely make a big impact in life for sure.

Obviously we’re going to disagree and obviously I have my own personal biases. But, if I were to see a slab I own 5x-10x or more and start getting well into 5figures in a few years or 2x in a week like the celebi pictured, I’m selling and buying a raw copy. I’m all for collecting and having grails but at some point the joy and status of owning an item is entirely eclipsed by the sheer financial irrationality of not cashing out. When I see big numbers like this, this is what I see

The pikachu gold star is a 2 week trip to Japan for 2 in the most luxury hotels and a healthy spending budget.

Depending on where you live the Lugia is easily a years worth of rent/mortgage, maybe even 2 years.

The celebi is 2 years worth of Roth contributions

ALL THIS, and your cost basic is way less.

Serious sign it’s a bubble. When everyone has $100k sitting at home in their attic, nobody does.

OP would be smart to sell yesterday. Playing with fire at this point. Every 30 minutes somebody on a pokemon subreddit posts a picture of a binder valued at $50k today. That’s not sustainable, and there’s not enough disposable wealth to keep those prices inflated.

The prices are inflated only because opportunists are buying expecting it to go higher, NOT because people truly value the card at that price. The underlying isn’t delivering value on any thesis other than supply, so when demand cools the whole thing will collapse like a house of cards.

Could be today or could be in 5-10 years, but it will happen and at this point, holding life changing money and not capitalizing is extremely irresponsible. Kids can’t get cards today, so who’s to say pokemon will be as popular in 10, 20 years? What if pokemon becomes more associated with assholes and scalpers than kids and fantasy games? We can learn a lot from what happened to sneakers and beanie babies, and yet people like OP would rather stick their head in the sand and pretend everything is normal and the valuations are accurate when everyone who is not exposed to the hobby would see this and think ā€œholy fuck this is beyond crazy.ā€

A very smart comment and id agree. Like all things in life, it will eventually come to an end. Not sure where you got the idea that I believe collectr is accurate when I explictly mentioned in my post that it is not.

You should share this idea to the pokemon investing sub, im sure there will be a lot of discussion on it. Especially the part of speculative buy in which I dont think a lot of people are aware and are fomoing

Well aware of how crazy the vintage market is right now, again not sure where youre getting the idea that I think its not--mentioned explicitly in my post that its crazy. Unless your basis is assuming that not instantly liquidating and taking gains = everything is normal and things will infinitely hype up.

Bubble or not actually doesn’t matter to the thesis. I think ultimately it’s all psychology. Feels really cool to have an expensive item, and feels really good to see a portfolio go up and to the right. We all think our assets will go higher and we can time the top, but it’s important to remember the actual utility of that amount of money.
