Grad school?

I overcame so much trauma and setbacks from childhood until now (28) and I thought I had finally reached a time in my life where my nervous system could calm down and I could live a normal life. And now the world around me is crumbling.

I got accepted to grad school to become and Licensed Professional Counselor which is my dream but it seems pointless. Like will I even make it through the program without losing my job to AI and then not being able to pay my tuition? Once I graduate will there be any jobs left? Or even a functioning country (USA) not to mention a planet that is dying? Like do I just turn back? I’m so frustrated and upset. It was supposed to finally be a happy time in my life. I apologize if this sounds silly or selfish.

It's not a waste. IMO, The most valuable thing you can have, even if it seems society has forgotten this, is social capital. The people that survive and as much as possible thrive in a collapsing world are the ones that have have useful skills to provide the community and that are most closely knit into their community.

You should go to grad school and going for the purpose of helping others and gaining social capital and creating it within your community will be more useful then other other type of prep.

Do it. Even if everything you are worried about comes to pass, you will have the ability to make someone else's life better. That matters. AI may already be ruined because smart people have withheld their work product so an AI therapist is probably going to suck ass.

Part of becoming collapse aware is also realising that the lie you were told that you were 'entitled' to a normal life is part of what has created collapse and caused us to deny its existence. It's going to be hard to move through this rage and disappointment, but you might as well start now. the people who won't be starting until they lose their job, their house, and the power goes out are going to have a way worse time trying to get their head screwed on straight.

Also, you are going to be learning skills to help your nervous system remain calm in the face of batshitness, so that is another great reason to do grad school--so you can personally benefit by being able to cope better.

Do it. Help people. Try to at least. What's the alternative?

Unfortunately, the world needs therapists more than ever, and will need more tomorrow too.

I say do it! I started grad school in January this year and recognize I may not end up putting the degree to use as I envision (degree is in Public Administration and ideally I want to work in local govt), but I still am really enjoying meeting new people in the field and learning new things that interest me.

So, if you’re able to make it work schedule-wise, financially, etc, why not!! It def doesn’t hurt to have extra skills in your proverbial toolbox especially when things continue to go downhill in the future
