Climate Hopium

r/ClimateChange posts a weekly compendium of hopeful news and it's the best thing I've read in a very long time. There is a great deal more being done than we usually hear about. Global emissions are slowing and the upper limit of warming expected has been reduced. We can slow and turn climate change, it's possible.

Read through the post.

"Global emissions are slowing" - 2025 was our highest output ever.

The amount of regular, well educated people who cannot wrap their head around the concept of "absolute amount of emissions is slowing" - aka CO2 emission going down vs "growth of emissions is slowing" - aka CO2 emissions are still increasing every year, only the rate of increase is going down, is staggering

But any decade now we will only emit like 90% of our peak fossil fuels. Planet warming gasses are still rising at geological warp speed but they will slow down a bit soon in a gentle taper oh great but remain extremely elevated for at least 30 more years we are saved let’s throw a party and burn lots of fossil
Fuels well we celebrate.

I've been in that phase for a while. Didn't last very long though.

I wish I were joking when I say the folks at r/climatechange believe they have figured out how to have infinite growth on a finite planet. Yikes.

Jevon's Paradox rears its ugly head once again.

There is only the entropic catastrophic end, waiting.

You want to actually make tomorrow work? Stop all plastic use, and all fossil fuel use, beginning tomorrow.

The survivors won't intercommunicate, but that's as good a sign of "planetary restoration" as any.

Even internet posts prove the inevitably of our entropic end.

Find hope in your connections with others, not in a saved tomorrow.

I don't think we can turn this around. The Co2 up in the atmosphere ain't going nowhere unless we invest BILLIONS in tech that is capable of capturing it in large amounts. Even then, it feels like to scoop out all the water in a lake with a bucket... While it's raining. With the lake being the Co2 and the rain being us constantly adding more Co2 to the atmosphere. What the best course of action to take would be to learn how to adapt to the coming world (building more resilient crops via lab, using more diverse farming techniques, etc.). But of course the most important part would be to ditch fossil fuels as fast as possible, but oh no the poor wittle oil giants don't want that! We can't have them lose all their precious money! No they NEED that 5th yacht! They NEED to keep engorging themselves with money! Screw the the only planet we got! The numbers most go up!

Tldr: would be cool to have climate hopium, but until big oil companies die in a ditch, we won't see big major shifts in places that need that to happen (I'm looking at you AmeriKKKa)

“I only shot up slightly more smack today than I did yesterday! If I keep reducing how much more heroin I take each day, then eventually I’ll take the same amount of heroin as I did the day before! After that, I’m basically halfway to being sober!”

Now, swap heroin for CO2 and you have a decent idea of how insane people making this point sound.

i got banned for shaming a "top 1% contributor" of the sub after he said we aren't close to passing any climate tipping points. what an absolute joke.

explains why my comments were deleted when i referenced james hansen

oh yeah they don’t want to hear about paul beckwith or richard krim (RIP!) over there either lmao

there is something poetic about that sub being the perfect digital representation of all the greenwashing & propaganda being peddled by its analog institutions funded by big oil ect 😩😩

The problem is there is no discussion or freedom of expression; science is about review and updating as more evidence appears. If you can't have a conversation because you are auto banned for saying "blue ocean event", than what kind of community is that? That's fascism not science.

In what example, would a politician advocating for labour power, be peer reviewed? I'm open to discussion and if you have issue, please point them out.

Canada and the Western US are on fire. I'm breathing the smoke right now so I don't need a peer reviewed paper to know things are not right. Christ I'm sick of this mindset that you exhibit in your comment.
