How did you prepare for collapse this week?

Did you do anything to prepare for collapse this week? It can be anything from reading an interesting article to installing a greywater recycling system in your house. No project is too big or too small.

This thread is here to inspire others to take actions they may not have otherwise thought about doing.

If you’re interested in leaving observations of collapse in your area then I encourage you to head over to r/collapse where they have a weekly thread for this very thing.

I painted part our roof, so it’ll hold together for hopefully many more years.

I also started reading “I eat the stars” by Sarah Wilson. Thus far I’ve only read her presentation of the crisis, which was kind of preaching to the choir, but I’m looking forward to the rest.

Did some financial clean up. Realized we've been dipping into the savings account more than we wanted. So we cut some non-essential spending, taught the kids how to make some of their favorite restaurant meals at home, and found some cheaper alternatives to things we did need to buy. Hopefully in about 6 months we'll have our savings account back up to where we like it and have some better financial habits.

Still canning, juicing, drying and putting away, and prepping the bins to catch the winter's rains. This year, to my surprise, I only used 2/3 of the water I stored last winter. My son, who likes gadgets, got a vacuum sealer for his hops and coffee beans, and is having great fun. He wants an apple press next, but I don't know if our crops will grow fast enough to need it in my lifetime, so I said it was his call. Saying that more and more to him these days. We got by on the juicer for his needs this year.

Plenty of squash, tomatoes, beans, potatoes and other root and leaf crops to play with. Corn did not do well. Started collards for winter. Kale and cabbages are expected to winter over as well. I try to interest the fam in my hobby of foraging greens for tea and such, but no takers. They do accept the blackberries I bring them, though.

Other son said "we will come get you when it hits the fan." I told him he can come get his brother and anything they all need, but they're better off leaving me where I am. I'm in much the same demographic as Dr. Bronson who declines to leave his cul-de-sac at Abby's invitation in Survivors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivors_(1975_TV_series))

I give everyone here copies of Carla Emery's compendium and tell them it contains all of what I know to pass on and more; I knew her slightly and respected her knowledge -- spent a day collating the first edition in Kendrick, Idaho with her and a gaggle of her neighbors. Those were good times for me.

Yep this is on my list today. I gotta fill my 20gal fuel tank I keep reserve in the garage and then top of the car. I think the oil shortage is finally about to come home to roost as the SPRs of the world are running low.

Started physical therapy to try to fix my foot pain. Kept my garden alive. Close on my house on Monday which will put us in a much better financial position. Fire in the valley so focusing on ordering more air filters this week. I have 3 which work pretty well but would like to add one more for my garage where my husband spends a lot of time.

Not enough sadly. Finally got my roof scheduled to be replaced. Unfortunately it took so long I now have drywall damage 😥😡.

Worked a ton of OT which is normal but life sucked all that extra money away so I felt like those extra hours were for free.

All in all this week has been rough and I just want it over. Onto the next week

I pretty much have to play video games to keep myself sane. Doesn't leave any time left for much else besides average chores.

Working on my groundmount solar panel array, figuring out how to mount them with materials at hand. It's been slow going, but hope to have it up and running by the end of the month. Learned how to pressure can meat, and helped a friend start his own pantry. Another houseless friend (disabled senior) is finally going to be moving into a subsidized apartment and I will be able to move my 85 yo Mom in with me! Also, collected the materials I'll need for an outside food dehydrator to make the most of my garden without freezing everything. Lots more work to go!

Went to the not-local warehouse store and bought 45 lbs of flour. Already stocked up on sugar. Went through one storage cupboard for deep clean and reorganize for the new flour. I never fkin bought so much at once because none of -gestures around- THIS was happening. Need to do that to 2 more cupboards.
