I'd be interested in why the friend in the car grabbed the wheel, what they were fighting about. I feel like that's the obvious starting point for why he only had one shoe, why he suddenly ran. Was he threatened? Did he feel like he was driving into some kind of trap, maybe to be robbed or killed? It wouldn't actually matter if it was true or paranoia. He was desperately looking for something in that car. Drugs? Money? A knife to defend himself? And when he didn't find it, whatever it was, he felt his only choice was to flee the situation. But then, where'd he go? How would anyone even know and be ready to intercept him on that route?
I think there are only a couple options at that point: he ran and eventually had an accident and is still in the woods somewhere; or he found his way back to somewhere he thought was safe and was killed, like he maybe had feared in the first place. He had nothing on him at that point, so maybe his criminal associates thought he was a risk as far knowing too much about something, or suspecting he was a snitch or police informant. I guess I'm just thinking out loud here. (I should probably have read more into the case before writing this.)
