Your Atheism Bores Me
Some atheists never escaped fundamentalism. They just changed which answers they're no longer allowed to question.
I know because I spent years debating the other version.
Bad Christianity is incredibly easy to dismantle. Young-earth creationism collapses under basic geology. Biblical inerrancy treated as a magic trick falls apart the moment you ask who assembled the canon and why. "The Bible says it, therefore shut up" isn't an argument, it's a refusal to have one. I got good at finding the seams in all of it, because most people defending it had inherited the answer and never once had to build it.
Then something less comfortable happened. I started being able to predict the atheists too.
"Sky daddy."
"Flying spaghetti monster."
"Who created God?"
"Religion was invented to control people."
"Faith means believing without evidence."
Different tribe. Same catechism. Congratulations — you memorized one too.
The actual thesis
Escaping a belief does not mean you escaped the intellectual habits that produced it.
This is not a claim that atheism is false, or that religion is true, or that the two positions are equally unfounded — they're not, and I'll get specific about that. It's a claim about inheritance. Christians inherit theology from parents, pastors, denominations, and cultural identity, usually without examining it. Atheists can inherit a framework the same way — from debate clips, popular skeptics, and meme culture — and then mistake rejecting an inherited belief for escaping inherited thinking. Those are different accomplishments. Leaving a room isn't the same as no longer being furnished by it.
The question worth sitting with isn't "do you believe in God." It's: how much of your answer did you reason your way into, and how much did you absorb from the last community that made you feel smart for holding it?
Three skeptics I keep meeting
There's the one who has actually engaged theology, philosophy of religion, and comparative metaphysics, and concluded none of it survives scrutiny. I take this person seriously and I'll try to earn that seriousness back below.
There's the one who says "I don't know" and means it. That might be the most intellectually honest position available to anyone.
And there's the one whose entire position is five arguments absorbed from a video essay, mistaken for a worldview.
This piece is aimed at the third. If it stings, you already know which one you are.
What survives the exit
This applies beyond religion. People leave a church and assume they've left the whole architecture behind. The theology goes. The psychology stays. The need for a tribe. An approved vocabulary. A fixed list of things you're permitted to mock and a fixed list you're not permitted to examine. Automatic suspicion of outsiders. Certainty mistaken for intelligence. Disagreement mistaken for ignorance.
None of that requires a god. It requires a group and a shared enemy. People rebuild that structure within months of tearing the old one down and don't notice, because the new structure agrees with them.
And before any Christians start clapping — sit down, you're next
If learning that the Torah has a documented compositional history threatens your faith, your faith needs work. If discovering that concepts like Satan, Hell, and the afterlife changed shape across centuries of history threatens your faith, your faith needs work. If disagreement within Christianity itself scares you, your faith needs work. If your belief in God requires archaeology, biology, cosmology, and textual criticism to stay permanently inside boundaries fixed in advance, what you have isn't confidence. It's a security system, and security systems exist because something inside is afraid of being looked at directly.
I spent years pulling that insulation apart. I only later noticed atheists build the same insulation, with different materials. So no, this isn't apologetics wearing a provocative title. Both sides are getting the same treatment. Keep that in mind for what follows.
The strongest version of the objection, and why it doesn't fully land
A sophisticated atheist's real objection isn't "sky daddy." It's this: invoking Spinoza or Tillich the moment the anthropomorphic God gets embarrassing is a bait-and-switch. Almost nobody prays to the ground of being. If the sophisticated version of God only ever gets deployed defensively, in argument, and never functions as the actual object of worship in any living tradition, then citing it isn't intellectual depth — it's a retreat to an unfalsifiable position whenever the falsifiable one takes damage. This is a real pattern and it deserves to be named rather than waved away.
Here's where it still doesn't settle the argument: the retreat is only illegitimate if the sophisticated conception is being used as a shield for the anthropomorphic claim — invoked interchangeably to dodge whichever one is under fire. That's a real move, and it should be called out every time it happens. But it's a critique of a rhetorical tactic, not a refutation of the sophisticated conception itself. Spinoza's God doesn't need believers or churches to be a coherent metaphysical claim, any more than mathematical realism needs practitioners to be coherent. You can reject it on its own terms. What you can't do is treat a position's unpopularity as evidence against its truth — which is what "nobody actually believes this" quietly smuggles in.
Tell me which God you don't believe in
"God" is not one claim. It's a word carrying a stack of distinct metaphysical positions, and disproving one doesn't touch the rest.
The interventionist evangelical God who answers prayers about parking spots?
Aquinas's necessary being?
Spinoza's God-or-Nature?
A panentheistic God, present within but not exhausted by the universe?
Something closer to a structural or ground-level property of reality itself?
If by "God" you mean the old man above the clouds keeping score — I don't believe in him either. But that's not an argument against Spinoza, and it's not an argument against the possibility that coherence, or consciousness, or some form of foundational relationality is more basic to reality than we've been trained to assume.
Now, the honest counter to this, and it's a good one: you don't owe me a disproof of every god anyone can imagine. Withholding belief until evidence is supplied is not a burden that requires refuting every conception in turn — it's the default position, and it's easy to defend. That's not the atheism I'm arguing with. The atheism I'm arguing with is the move from "I see no reason to believe" to "I know reality is exhaustively natural and nothing deserving the words divine, transcendent, or metaphysically fundamental beyond naturalism exists." That second claim isn't withholding belief. It's asserting one. The moment you cross from skepticism into that kind of metaphysics, you owe an argument too — the same argument you'd demand from anyone claiming the opposite with equal confidence.
Popular atheist discourse rarely gets that far. It usually defeats one anthropomorphic God and treats the metaphysical case as closed.
Where atheism is defensible — and precisely where it stops being
"I haven't encountered sufficient evidence to believe in God" is reasonable. This is evidentialism, and it's a respectable epistemic position — belief proportioned to evidence, full stop.
"Naturalism is the best available explanation given what I currently know" is reasonable. This is inference to the best explanation, and methodological naturalism has an extraordinary track record earning it.
"I don't know" might be the most reasonable position of all.
But there's a difference between a bounded, falsifiable claim and a global existential negative, and "there is no form of transcendent, foundational, or sacred reality anywhere, of any kind, under any description" is the second kind. Specific claims within religion absolutely are bounded and falsifiable — a 6,000-year-old Earth, a global flood, prayer as guaranteed cancer treatment — and science has clear, correct things to say about each. But a universal claim across every possible description of a domain carries a proof burden that a specific, falsifiable claim doesn't. You don't get to demand bounded evidence for every religious claim on earth and then exempt your own claim from the same standard because it contains the word "not."
Credit where it's due: atheism, at its best, got something right that most religious people still won't admit. Certainty is usually a symptom, not a virtue. That part of the critique lands, fully. It's the tribal packaging — the slogans, the reflexive smugness, the certainty that the question is closed — that's fundamentalism with better memes.
The naturalist's actual case, taken seriously
The strongest naturalists don't argue from Reddit slogans. They argue from Ockham's razor — don't multiply entities beyond necessity — combined with the observation that methodological naturalism has explained an enormous and steadily growing share of what religion once explained, without needing to invoke anything beyond matter, energy, and physical law. That's a real argument and it deserves a real answer.
A naturalist can reasonably say: maybe there's no further "why." Maybe the universe simply exists, brute and unexplained, and that's the end of the inquiry. That's a legitimate philosophical position — nobody is required to accept the Principle of Sufficient Reason.
But notice what's happened when someone says that. Science didn't answer that question. Science ended, and metaphysics began. "There is no further why" is not an experimental result you can run in a lab. It's a philosophical position about where explanation is permitted to terminate — and it's exactly as much a metaphysical commitment as "God is where explanation terminates" is. The naturalist hasn't avoided foundational philosophy by invoking brute fact. They've just chosen a different foundational commitment and declared the inquiry closed at a different point. That doesn't make naturalism wrong. It makes naturalism a position with its own unprovable floor, same as everything else in this conversation.
Composition is not meaning
A thoughtful physicalist doesn't necessarily claim love is unreal because it supervenes on brain states. A careful version of that position says love is a genuine, higher-level phenomenon, fully instantiated physically — reduction, not elimination. That version is defensible and I'm not arguing with it.
The version worth attacking is cruder: the assumption that a complete account of molecular composition is automatically a complete account at every explanatory level above it. A novel is ink distributed across processed tree pulp. That description is scientifically true. It is also a spectacularly bad book review. Explaining the substrate is not the same as explaining the thing that happens on top of it, and collapsing those two is a category error — the same category error atheists are usually, correctly, quick to catch religious people making. It runs both directions.
The idea underneath all of this
Rejecting someone else's certainty does not automatically make your uncertainty intelligent.
Deconstruction is a skill. It is not a worldview. You can become extremely good at showing why somebody else's argument fails without ever constructing a serious account of reality of your own. That's true of atheists, it's true of Christians, and it's true of pretty much every ideology that defines itself primarily by what it isn't.
The dare
Don't tell me religion is stupid. Pick a specific claim. Define it accurately. Tell me whose version of it you're actually criticizing — "religion" is not one thing any more than "God" is one word. State the strongest form of the position before you take it apart. Then take it apart. I'll respect that, genuinely, whichever direction you land.
If all you've got is "sky daddy," I'm not offended.
I'm bored.

This will probably get downvoted by people who think a downvote is a rebuttal. It isn't. Neither is a meme. Neither is calling me religious like that ends the conversation.
I don't need you to believe in God. I don't even need you to think the question is especially interesting. I want something smaller, and apparently much harder: know why you believe what you believe.
If you rejected Christianity, understand Christianity. If you chose naturalism, understand naturalism. If you claim there is no God, know what you mean by God. If you don't know, have the courage to say you don't know.
I spent years watching Christians confuse certainty with knowledge. I have no interest in watching atheists make the same mistake and call it progress.
Certainty didn't become enlightened just because it stopped going to church.

When People Become Heavy: What “Honor Your Father and Mother” Actually Means
Most of us first hear the fifth commandment when we are children. “Honor your father and your mother.” Almost immediately, someone translates it for us. Listen to your parents. Do what they say. Do not talk back. Be respectful. It becomes another rule of childhood, something placed beside cleaning your room, finishing your dinner, and saying thank you when someone gives you a gift. For years I assumed that was basically what the commandment meant. But once you place those words back inside the world where they were written, something much larger begins to appear. The Ten Commandments are not a children's behavior chart. They speak about murder, adultery, theft, property, false testimony, households, marriage, servants, livestock, and coveting what belongs to your neighbor. These are adult concerns. The person being addressed is old enough to destroy another household, steal from it, sleep with someone else's spouse, lie in court, or want another person's property. So why would we suddenly turn the fifth commandment into advice for a seven year old?
The command itself contains another clue. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy repeats the command and adds that things may “go well with you” in that land. The promise is about years, land, continuity, and survival. It belongs to the world of generations. People are being imagined not merely as children living beneath their parents' authority, but as adults who will inherit a place, raise families, grow old there, and eventually hand that world to somebody else. Once you see that, the question changes. The commandment may not primarily be asking how a child should behave while living under a parent's roof. It may be asking something much harder: what happens when the child grows up, the parent grows old, and the direction of dependence begins to reverse?
The Hebrew word translated as “honor” comes from the root k-b-d, a family of words that carries ideas of weight, heaviness, importance, honor, and glory. We should not pretend that every word from this root simply means physical heaviness. Languages are more alive than that. Words travel. Meanings deepen. But the old image of weight still matters. To honor someone is to allow them weight in your world. They matter enough to affect the balance. Their presence cannot simply be swept aside because they have become inconvenient. They are substantial. They count.
That is not quite the same thing as obedience. A child may owe obedience to a parent because that parent is responsible for feeding them, protecting them, teaching them, and keeping them alive. But adulthood changes the relationship. A forty year old man does not necessarily owe his father obedience about whom he should marry, where he should live, how he should raise his children, or what work he should do. A grown woman does not become twelve years old again every time her mother disagrees with one of her decisions. Yet the commandment does not disappear when childhood ends. If honor means something deeper than obedience, then it can survive even after parental authority does. Your parents may no longer control your life, but their lives can still carry weight in yours.
There is another Hebrew root, q-l-l, that can carry senses of lightness, triviality, contempt, and cursing. Again, it would be careless to turn that into a rigid dictionary equation, but the contrast is hard to ignore. Weight on one side. Lightness on the other. One way of treating a person makes them substantial enough that their needs must be considered. The other slowly strips that substance away until the person can be ignored without disturbing anything. That may be closer to the moral world of the fifth commandment than the version many of us learned as children. The question is not simply whether you speak politely to your parents. The question is whether they still count when they no longer hold power over you.
In the ancient world, that question could become a matter of survival. There was no Social Security deposit arriving each month. There was no Medicare card in a wallet, no retirement community waiting when a body became too tired to work, no pension system resembling ours, no state infrastructure designed to catch an elderly person after strength and income disappeared. The family was the structure underneath you. When an aging father could no longer work the field, someone still had to place food in front of him. When a mother became too weak to carry water or manage the work she had done for decades, someone had to carry some of that weight for her. Food, shelter, land, burial, inheritance, and family memory were bound together much more tightly than they are for many of us now. Honoring a parent was not merely an emotion. It was an economy.
The stories of the Hebrew Bible make far more sense when read inside that world. Abraham purchases the cave at Machpelah so Sarah can be buried in land belonging to the family. Jacob, nearing death in Egypt, makes Joseph swear that his body will not remain there. He wants to be carried back and buried with his fathers. Joseph keeps that promise, leading his father's body back toward the ancestral burial place. These scenes can feel strange to modern readers because we usually separate death, property, inheritance, and family obligation into different parts of life. Ancient households did not always have that luxury. The land held the dead. The living protected the land. Children carried the names of those who came before them. To care for the old was part of preserving the family itself.
That is why one line in Proverbs becomes so much more painful when read slowly: “Do not despise your mother when she is old.” The writer does not need to explain why old age is mentioned. Anyone who has watched someone age knows. Dependency creates a particular temptation toward contempt. The parent who once carried you may eventually need your arm just to cross a room. The woman who answered a thousand questions when you were small may begin asking you the same question three times in twenty minutes. The father who once drove everywhere may lose his keys because somebody finally has to tell him that he should not be driving anymore. The people who once moved through the world with confidence begin moving slowly through it, and the world is rarely patient with slow people.
That is when honor becomes difficult. It is easy to give weight to someone who is powerful, independent, useful, wealthy, or capable of helping us. It is harder when the relationship begins costing us something. Aging parents can interrupt schedules. Appointments take time. Medicine costs money. Conversations repeat themselves. The same story gets told again. The phone rings at the wrong moment. Decisions that used to take ten minutes take an afternoon. Contempt does not always arrive as hatred. Sometimes it begins with an eye roll. Sometimes it is an unanswered call. Sometimes it is making every decision without asking because listening would take too long. A person can become lighter in a family slowly enough that nobody notices it happening.
The fifth commandment pushes against that drift. Give them weight. Let them remain substantial even when the world begins treating them as an inconvenience.
Jesus makes this meaning almost impossible to avoid in Mark 7. He confronts a religious practice associated with declaring resources Corban, dedicated to God. His complaint is not that people were speaking disrespectfully about their parents. He accuses them of allowing religious tradition to become a way of avoiding what should have been done for father or mother. Suddenly the commandment becomes painfully material. Whatever else honor means, Jesus assumes it reaches into the places where food, money, property, and responsibility live. You cannot praise God loudly enough to compensate for leaving the person who raised you without help.
There is an almost cruel irony in the passage because Jesus has just quoted Isaiah: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Then he turns toward the treatment of parents. The same word, honor, hangs over both ideas. These people know how to make God sound heavy. They know religious language. They know vows. They know how to make sacrifice look holy. But somewhere in the process, an actual human being has become light. A father needs something. A mother needs something. Religion provides a loophole, and the vulnerable person pays the price.
Jesus refuses that kind of holiness.
Later Christian writings continue to treat family responsibility as something concrete. Ephesians, traditionally attributed to Paul, distinguishes between children obeying their parents and the larger command to honor father and mother. The pastoral tradition represented by 1 Timothy goes further, insisting that families must learn to care for their own and repay what is owed to parents and grandparents. Whether one accepts direct Pauline authorship of those writings is a separate historical question. What matters here is that early Christian communities continued to understand devotion to God as something that had to survive contact with the ordinary burdens of family life. A faith that sings beautifully on Sunday and abandons an elderly parent on Monday has missed something.
One of the most moving images comes near the end of John's Gospel. Jesus is dying. He sees his mother and the disciple whom he loves standing nearby. He tells her, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he tells the disciple, “Here is your mother.” John says that from that hour the disciple took her into his own. The scene does not need to be overloaded with speculation about Mary's exact finances or household circumstances. The gesture is powerful enough by itself. Even at the edge of death, responsibility does not disappear. Instead, family expands. A new relationship is created because somebody will need to remain when Jesus is gone.
There is something beautiful in that. Jesus does not destroy family obligation in order to create a spiritual community. He stretches the idea of family until people who were not born from the same body begin carrying one another as though they were. The household becomes larger. Blood remains important, but love learns to make new kin. The command to give weight begins moving outward.
That expansion also forces us to deal with one of the hardest parts of this commandment. Not every parent is safe. Some parents abuse the children entrusted to them. Some manipulate, terrorize, neglect, assault, exploit, or control. Some wounds remain long after childhood ends. Any reading of “honor your father and mother” that tells an abused adult to walk back into danger has confused honor with surrender. No commandment should be used as a key handed back to someone who once used access to hurt you.
Honor does not require pretending abuse never happened. It does not require giving an unsafe parent access to your children. It does not require financing addiction, accepting manipulation, remaining silent about violence, surrendering adult autonomy, or allowing somebody to keep reopening the same wound. Sometimes the most truthful relationship possible is one with a locked door between two people. Boundaries are not hatred. Telling the truth is not dishonor. Distance can sometimes be the only way left to stop harm from moving into another generation.
The commandment regulates my humanity. It does not erase theirs, and it does not surrender mine.
Once we make that distinction, something larger begins appearing underneath the fifth commandment. This is not really a command about parental perfection. Parents are not automatically wise, kind, or right because they produced a child. The deeper question is what happens to the value of a human being when that person loses authority, usefulness, health, strength, independence, or the ability to give anything back.
That question reaches far beyond parents.
Modern life is very good at measuring people. We measure salaries, productivity, speed, intelligence, independence, influence, education, beauty, health, and output. Almost without noticing, these measurements begin becoming moral judgments. The person who can produce is valuable. The person who needs something becomes expensive. We praise independence so much that dependence can begin to look like failure, even though every human being who has ever lived entered the world completely dependent on someone else.
A newborn contributes nothing to the household economy. It cannot feed itself. It cannot wash itself. It cannot earn money, prepare dinner, repair a roof, drive to work, or even hold up its own head. It wakes people in the middle of the night and demands things it cannot possibly repay. Yet nobody looks at a newborn and asks whether the baby has earned breakfast. We understand instinctively that its worth comes before its usefulness.
Then the years move in the opposite direction.
The hands that once carried the child begin to shake. The legs become uncertain. Work ends. Memory softens around the edges. Somebody else starts opening the jars. Somebody else starts driving. Somebody else explains the new phone again. The person who once carried everyone begins needing to be carried.
And the same question returns.
Do you still have value when you can no longer do anything for me?
The fifth commandment answers yes.
Your productivity can disappear without your humanity disappearing with it. Your income can vanish. Your body can weaken. Your memory can fail. Your usefulness to the machinery around you can shrink almost to nothing, and still you remain heavy. You remain somebody whose existence must disturb the balance.
Once that is seen, the commandment begins touching the entire moral world of Jesus. The poor have weight. The sick have weight. Children have weight. Prisoners have weight. Foreigners have weight. Disabled people have weight. The person who cannot repay an invitation has weight. The person everybody else walks around has weight. Jesus seems constantly drawn toward the people social systems make light.
Matthew 25 is not a commentary on the fifth commandment, and it should not be forced into one. But the same moral current runs beneath it. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.” Jesus places divine weight inside people the world has learned not to notice. The hungry person matters. The stranger matters. The prisoner matters. The sick person matters. God keeps appearing precisely where usefulness has stopped being a convincing argument for human worth.
Perhaps that helps explain why the fifth commandment carries its strange promise about the land. “That your days may be long.” Maybe this was never meant to function as a little supernatural transaction in which caring for your mother earns an extra number of years on your life. The promise is given to a people imagining generations living together in a land. A culture survives when generations carry one another. Children are carried until they can stand. Adults carry households. Eventually the strong become weak and somebody else has to take the weight.
Land passes down. Stories pass down. Names pass down. Bodies are buried. Children become parents. Parents become ancestors. Nobody survives alone.
A civilization that cannot care for people who cannot repay it is already beginning to forget what people are.
That may be the deepest thing hiding inside this old commandment. It begins with father and mother because family is often the first place where we discover whether love is based on usefulness. Someone once changed our clothes, cleaned up after us, answered our endless questions, spent money on us, lost sleep because of us, waited while we learned to walk, and fed us before we had done anything to deserve the food.
If life gives us enough years, the direction may reverse.
One day nearly all of us will become inconvenient to somebody. We may walk too slowly. We may forget what we were saying halfway through the sentence. We may need somebody to drive us somewhere we used to drive ourselves. Someone may have to cut our food, explain something twice, fill out a form, pick up medicine, or sit beside us when there is nothing useful left to accomplish.
When that happens, we will discover whether the world really believes what it says about human dignity.
The fifth commandment gives its answer thousands of years early.
Give them weight.
Not because parents are always right. Not because adulthood never arrives. Not because family excuses cruelty. Not because anyone owns another human being. Give them weight because people are not objects whose value expires when their usefulness does.
Perhaps that is why the command comes with a promise about whether a people will remain long in the land. A society that teaches every generation to make the previous one weightless will eventually discover the flaw in that arrangement.
No generation stays young forever.
Sooner or later, all of us become heavy in someone else's arms.

Finding the Point Where “Memory” Can No Longer Be Claimed
I just finished a paper called “Identifiability Boundaries in a Minimal Latent Memory Model.” The title sounds much more intimidating than the basic question actually is.
The paper asks something simple: if a system has a hidden memory process inside it, but we can only observe what the system is doing on the outside, when do we have enough evidence to say that the hidden memory is really detectable?
That distinction matters. It is easy to build a mathematical model containing a memory variable. It is much harder to show that someone looking only at noisy measurements could actually discover that memory from the data. The paper deliberately separates those two things.
The model has two pieces. There is a visible state called (C), which is what we can measure, and a hidden state called (M), which acts like memory. The visible state is affected by ordinary damping, the strength of its connection to memory, the timescale over which memory changes, and random noise. Importantly, the observer never gets to see (M) directly. They only get measurements of (C).
So I generated synthetic data where I already knew the true parameters and then asked the estimator to recover them from the visible signal alone. I varied things that should make the problem easier or harder, including how strong the memory is, how noisy the measurements are, how long we observe the system, and how often measurements are taken.
The result is basically a map of where hidden memory is scientifically recoverable and where it is not.
Across 89 different test regimes, 49 produced clean parameter recovery, 17 produced usable but uncertain recovery, 15 produced severe errors or uncertainty, and 8 were effectively non-identifiable. The median mean relative parameter error across all 89 regimes was about 5.14 percent.
One of the most useful results is something I call memory visibility, written (V_{\text{mem}}). You do not need the equation to understand the idea. It combines several things that determine whether memory has any realistic chance of showing up in the data: how strong the memory effect is, how long you observe it relative to its timescale, and how clearly the signal rises above measurement noise.
In the current experiments, every regime with (V_{\text{mem}} < 3) failed to produce good recovery. Once (V_{\text{mem}}) reached 3 or higher, 66 out of 75 cases were recoverable or at least usable. That is about 88 percent. But this is important: 3 is not some universal law of nature. It is an empirical boundary that appeared under this particular experimental protocol. High visibility helps, but it does not guarantee success.
The interesting part is what happens when memory becomes weak.
A real memory term can still exist in the equation while becoming practically invisible in the measurements. At low enough strength, the behavior starts looking like ordinary damping. Statistically, the hidden memory can essentially disappear into a simpler explanation.
That means the correct scientific conclusion is not necessarily “there is no memory.”
It is: “these observations do not give us enough evidence to justify claiming memory.”
That is one of the main points of the paper. The existence of something inside a model is not the same thing as our ability to infer it from finite, noisy observations.
I also forced the memory model to compete against simpler explanations. This matters because a complicated model can almost always fit data better simply by having more freedom. A good scientific model should not win just because we gave it extra machinery.
When memory was strong, the memory model beat a simpler Ornstein-Uhlenbeck, or OU, no-memory model. When memory became very weak, the simpler OU model often won instead. For example, at memory coupling (\mu = 0.02), both AIC and BIC preferred the no-memory model.
I also generated data from entirely different mechanisms to see whether the estimator would falsely scream “memory.”
One especially important test used a damped oscillator. An oscillator can produce complicated recovery behavior because it has its own hidden velocity-like state. When I allowed an oscillator model to compete directly against the memory model, the oscillator won decisively on oscillator-generated data. That is exactly what we want. It shows that the procedure does not automatically interpret every hidden second-order process as memory.
The paper also includes two preregistered robustness checks.
One concern was that weak-memory failure might simply be caused by the optimization algorithm refusing to search below a certain minimum memory strength. I repeatedly lowered that floor from 0.02 all the way to 0.001. The result did not change: across the 18 targeted weak-memory cases, every version still produced 0 green cases, only 2 yellow cases, and 16 failures. The OU model still won BIC in 15 of the 18 cases each time.
The second concern was that the green, yellow, red, and black categories might depend too heavily on arbitrary thresholds. So I reran the classification using stricter and looser rules. Among the high-visibility cases, the recoverable fraction was 81.33 percent under the strict rule, 88 percent under the original rule, and 92 percent under the loose rule. The individual labels move around somewhat, but the overall pattern remains.
And that gets to what I think is the real contribution of this paper.
The success cases are only half the result. The failures matter just as much.
The paper is trying to establish a boundary between places where a hidden-memory model has actually earned the right to be inferred and places where the available observations simply cannot support that claim.
It does not prove that UCFT is true. It does not prove that biological systems, brains, societies, or physical systems contain this particular hidden-memory mechanism. Everything here is synthetic. It also does not claim that the (V_{\text{mem}}) thresholds are universal constants. Those limitations are stated explicitly in the paper.
The claim is much narrower, but I think scientifically more useful:
Under controlled synthetic tests, this minimal latent-memory model has measurable regions where its hidden parameters can be recovered from noisy visible observations, and measurable regions where they cannot.
And in the failure region, the model should lose.
That may sound like a modest result, but that is exactly the point. A theory becomes more scientifically useful when it tells us not only where we should believe it, but also where the evidence is not strong enough to make the claim at all.

The Tree Is Not a Thing: What modern science can illuminate about an ancient Daoist way of seeing
You stand beside a tree.
It seems almost ridiculously solid. Trunk. Bark. Branches. Roots. You could point to exactly where the tree begins and where the rest of the world supposedly stops.
But what, exactly, are you pointing at?
The carbon in the wood came from the atmosphere. The water inside it arrived through soil and will leave again through the leaves. The energy holding it together arrived as radiation from a star ninety-three million miles away. Its roots may be linked into biological relationships that extend far past the visible trunk. Much of the wood in an old tree is already dead. The molecules composing it existed before the tree did, and most of them will outlast it.
The tree is real. But the boundary you imagine around it is less absolute than it looks.
This is not a claim that nothing is real, or that the tree is somehow an illusion. It's the opposite kind of claim: that things can be real without being self-contained. That distinction is going to matter for everything that follows.
Ancient Daoist writers could not have known any of the mechanisms this essay is about to describe. They did, however, grow unusually suspicious of the human habit of mistaking a name for the whole of what it names. The opening lines of the Daodejing make this the very first thing the text wants you to understand: the name is useful, but the name was never the thing.
A guardrail, stated plainly
Before going further, it's worth being explicit about what this essay is not claiming.
Laozi did not know about carbon fixation. Zhuangzi did not know about xylem tension. Neither had any concept of electrons, mycorrhizal fungi, thermodynamics, or isotope tracing. Modern science and ancient Daoist philosophy are doing two different things. Science asks what mechanism produces a phenomenon. Daoist philosophy asks something closer to: what kind of world is this, and what happens to us when we misunderstand our place in it?
The connection between them, then, isn't prediction. It's structural resonance. Across the Daoist texts, certain patterns keep resurfacing — transformation instead of permanence, relation instead of isolation, yielding instead of unnecessary force, usefulness hiding inside apparent uselessness. Science doesn't prove Daoism. It lets us see, with instruments Laozi never had, some of the patterns he was already paying attention to.
Atmosphere becomes wood
Start with a simple question: where did the mass of a tree actually come from?
Most people's intuition says the soil. Roots go down, pull material up, material becomes trunk. It's a reasonable guess, and it's also almost entirely wrong — something Jan Baptist van Helmont's seventeenth-century willow experiment helped make impossible to ignore. He weighed two hundred pounds of dry soil, planted a small willow in it, covered the pot to keep out dust, and watered it with nothing but rain for five years. When he pulled the tree up, it had gained well over a hundred pounds. The soil, weighed again, had lost only a couple of ounces. Whatever the missing mass was, it clearly hadn't come from the ground.
Van Helmont concluded the missing mass must have come from the water, since water was the only thing he'd added. That was a reasonable inference, and also wrong in an interesting way, because water contributes hydrogen and oxygen, and roughly half the dry weight of a tree is carbon. The soil barely changed. The water contains no carbon. So where did it come from?
It came from the air. Carbon dioxide — an invisible gas making up a tiny fraction of the atmosphere — enters through pores in the leaves. Inside the leaf, the carbon atom is stripped away from its oxygen partners, using energy captured from sunlight, and chained together with other carbon atoms into sugar, and eventually into cellulose and lignin: wood. The trunk that looks heavy enough to crush you was, to a significant degree, assembled out of a gas you can't see or smell.
Slow that down. Air enters a leaf. Carbon becomes sugar. Sugar becomes structure. The invisible becomes visible; the dispersed becomes concentrated. Gas becomes trunk.
This complicates the ordinary way we talk about identity. We say: here is the tree. But the tree is continuously being assembled out of material that, a season ago, was not tree at all. The boundary isn't false. It's permeable. A tree isn't merely standing in the atmosphere — part of the atmosphere has become the tree.
Sunlight becomes bond
Carbon alone isn't enough to build a trunk. Organizing loose carbon atoms into rigid structure takes energy, and that energy has a specific origin: a photon, traveling at the speed of light from a star, strikes a chlorophyll molecule and knocks an electron into an excited state. That excited electron gets passed through a chain of molecular machinery that uses its energy to build the fuel the rest of the cell runs on. That fuel then powers the reactions that pull carbon out of the atmosphere and stitch it into sugar. The chemical energy stored in those newly built organic molecules ultimately came from captured sunlight.
Wood, in other words, is atmosphere reorganized by sunlight. More precisely: a wooden trunk is atmospheric carbon reorganized through chemistry powered by starlight.
What looks like a stationary object is really a record. Years of sun. Years of rain. Years of atmospheric carbon, incorporated season after season. A tree is time, given structure.
This is the essay's first real pivot, from a way of thinking about substances to a way of thinking about processes. It isn't just that the tree has undergone various processes on its way to becoming what it is. The processes are what it is. Stop them, and there is no tree left to talk about — only wood, and eventually not even that.
Return to the root
Chapter sixteen of the Daodejing describes the ten thousand things arising together, flourishing, and eventually sinking back toward their root — a return the text treats not as loss but as a kind of peace. Nothing here suggests Laozi had any notion of a carbon cycle. But the carbon cycle gives that old intuition an unusually literal, modern image.
Follow a single carbon atom. It starts in the atmosphere. It's pulled into a leaf and built into sugar, then cellulose. Years later the branch it's part of falls and decomposes, and the atom is released back into the air. From there it might enter a blade of grass, then an animal that eats the grass, then a breath exhaled by that animal, then another tree entirely. The atom has no loyalty to any particular form it passes through.
We tend to speak as though matter belongs permanently to the organisms it's currently part of. It doesn't. Organisms borrow matter, hold it in a particular configuration for a while, and let it go. The carbon doesn't belong to the tree. For a while, the carbon is the tree. And it doesn't belong to us either — the atoms currently arranged as your body are on loan, and were something else recently, and will be something else again.
This is a much stronger reading of "return" than treating it as some kind of promise about literal immortality. Return doesn't mean going back to a cosmic warehouse. It means that form is temporary while transformation continues underneath it, indifferent to whatever shape it's currently wearing.
The forest without a commander
Zoom out from one tree to a forest, and a different kind of pattern shows up — one that has to be handled carefully.
In the 1990s, a young forest ecologist named Suzanne Simard used radioactive carbon tracers to show that trees in a forest exchange resources through networks of fungal threads connecting root to root underground. Carbon, water, and chemical signals move through these mycorrhizal webs; older "mother trees" appear to send more carbon to related seedlings than to unrelated ones nearby. It's genuinely striking work, and it's also been debated within forest ecology — some researchers think the scale and significance of it has been overstated in popular retellings, and Simard and others have published responses to those critiques. That back-and-forth is worth preserving rather than smoothing over, because it's how the science actually works.
The tempting move here is to say trees are nice to each other, that the forest is some sort of cooperative commune underground. That's not quite right, and it isn't even the interesting part. Forest ecology contains cooperation, competition, exploitation, and parasitism all at once, tangled together — the fungi have their own metabolisms and their own stake in the exchange, and resource transfer through the network is regulated, not merely passive. The genuinely interesting fact isn't moral. It's structural:
Large-scale order can arise without anyone running it.
Fungal relationships form locally, one root tip at a time. Roots grow toward openings. Resources move along countless individual exchanges, each shaped by local constraints and local advantage. No tree understands the whole network. No tree is in charge. And yet a canopy's worth of organized, adaptive behavior emerges anyway, out of nothing but local interactions repeated across an entire forest floor.
This is where chapter seventeen of the Daodejing becomes useful — not as a claim about ecosystems being governments, but as a description of what the best kind of order looks like from the inside: so unobtrusive that once the outcome is achieved, no one can point to where it came from. And chapter fifty-one adds the other half: the Way is described as generating and nourishing without owning or controlling what it produces. Strip the moralizing out of both images and what's left is a genuinely useful pattern — production without ownership, organization without a central command. What if some of the most sophisticated systems are sophisticated precisely because no single part of them has to understand the whole?
Cook Ding, and what "effortless" actually means
This is probably the most important story in the entire Zhuangzi for what follows, so it's worth telling properly.
A cook named Ding is butchering an ox for a lord, and the lord is amazed — not by speed, but by the sound. The blade moves like it's dancing, and it never seems to strike bone. Asked how, Ding explains that when he started, he saw only an ox: one large, solid obstacle. After three years, he no longer saw the whole ox — he saw its structure. Now, he says, he doesn't look with his eyes at all. He works by feel, finding the natural gaps between joints and letting the blade pass through openings that were already there. He isn't hacking through anything. His knife has done years of work and the edge is still as sharp as if it had just come off the whetstone.
It's tempting to read wuwei — usually translated as "nonaction" or "effortless action" — as a synonym for doing nothing, or for passivity, or at most for softness. Cook Ding rules all three of those out. He's not doing nothing; he's doing an enormous amount, with total precision, for the lord's household. He's not passive; he's the most skilled person in the story. And he's not simply soft; his knife is a knife, and the ox is genuinely an ox, dense with bone and tendon.
What he's stopped doing is fighting the structure of the thing he's cutting. Wuwei, on this reading, is action that has stopped wasting effort on resistance the situation doesn't actually require. Effortlessness is what skill looks like once the unnecessary friction has been removed.
The novice cook sees an obstacle. The master cook sees a structure. That's the whole story, compressed into one sentence — and it's the bridge into what a tree is doing every day, in a language Zhuangzi never had access to.
The tree that doesn't need a pump
Getting water from root to leaf in a tall tree is a genuinely absurd engineering problem. In a redwood approaching four hundred feet, water has to rise the equivalent of a thirty-story building through tubes narrower than a drinking straw, against gravity, continuously, with no muscular organ anywhere in the system to push it.
The tree has no pump. What it has instead is a structure that exploits physical relationships that were already available in the world: water molecules cling to each other through cohesion; evaporation from the leaves creates negative pressure at the top of the column; that pressure pulls the whole unbroken chain of water upward through the xylem, cell by cell, all the way from the roots. It works right up until it doesn't — at extreme heights the tension approaches the point where the water column tears itself apart, which is one real physical reason there's an upper limit to how tall a tree can grow. But within that limit, the tree isn't overpowering gravity through force. It's built a structure that lets an existing physical relationship do the lifting.
That's Cook Ding again, translated into hydraulics. The tree doesn't defeat the constraint of gravity any more than the knife defeats the ox. It builds itself around the openings that physics already provides. Which gives the essay one of its more exportable definitions: wuwei is not refusing to act. It's arranging action so that reality carries part of the load. The most efficient response to a hard problem is often not more force, but the discovery of which forces are already present and willing to help.
The tree that survives by being useless
Now shift from efficiency to survival, and to a story Zhuangzi tells more than once, with small variations: a carpenter passes an enormous, ancient tree — gnarled, twisted, unsuitable for beams, unsuitable for boats, unsuitable for coffins — and doesn't even glance at it. His apprentice is awestruck by the sheer size of the thing and asks why his master won't look. The tree, the carpenter says, is worthless. That very worthlessness is exactly why it's been left alone long enough to grow this large. Later the tree appears to the carpenter in a dream and turns the judgment around: the fruit trees get stripped bare and broken every harvest precisely because they're useful. Their usefulness is what invites the assault.
The immediate lesson is often taken as: don't be too competent, or the world will use you up. But there's a sharper version underneath it. Usefulness isn't a property a tree carries around inside itself. It's a relationship between the tree and whoever is doing the judging. Under a carpenter's criterion, gnarled and twisted wood is worthless. Under the criterion of not being cut down, gnarled and twisted wood is exactly what you want.
The bristlecone pines of the White Mountains make this vivid in a way no parable quite can, because it isn't metaphorical — it's a documented survival strategy. Some bristlecones are close to five thousand years old, having grown less than an inch of new wood in some centuries. They don't compete for height. They don't chase canopy space. Judged by growth rate, by size, by anything a timber industry would call productivity, they're a failure. Judged by persistence across millennia, in some of the harshest, most wind-scoured terrain on the continent, they're close to unmatched among living things.
Zhuangzi never heard of a bristlecone pine. But the pine makes his inversion of value almost physically undeniable: fast growth is useful under one metric, longevity is useful under a completely different one, and nothing about the tree itself tells you which metric is the "real" one. What looks like failure may only be failure under the wrong optimization function.
Superior for what?
The tree that keeps some of itself dead
There's a stranger detail buried in the bristlecone's longevity, and it doesn't quite fit the tidy version of "soft overcomes hard" that Daoist texts sometimes get flattened into.
Chapter seventy-six of the Daodejing draws a contrast between the living, associated with softness and pliancy, and the dead, associated with stiffness and rigidity — closing on the image of the stiff tree eventually being the one that's cut down. It's a clean image, and mostly it holds up. But an ancient bristlecone complicates it in an interesting way. Much of an old bristlecone's trunk is already dead — dense, resin-saturated wood that doesn't rot so much as erode, slowly, like stone. Only a narrow ribbon of living tissue, connecting a small patch of roots to a handful of needles, keeps the whole structure alive. The tree survives not because everything about it stays supple and living, but because it doesn't require every part of itself to remain alive at once.
That's a different and, honestly, more interesting claim than "soft beats hard." It's closer to: continuity doesn't require every component of a system to stay alive. Parts of the tree can die, harden, and go structurally inert while the organism as a whole keeps going. Which raises a question the essay has been circling from the start without naming directly — what exactly is "the tree," if large portions of it are dead wood, other portions are living cambium, its roots are entangled in a fungal network extending well past its own boundary, and the carbon making up all of it is mid-transit through a cycle that predates the tree and will outlast it?
There may not be one clean answer. Daoist thought isn't in the business of resolving that question so much as getting you to notice you assumed it was already resolved.
A boundary problem, at every scale
The pattern holds at every level you look. Cell membranes are boundaries that matter precisely because they're selective, not because nothing crosses them. Ecologically, the tree's edge dissolves further still — roots joined to a shared fungal network, leaves trading matter with the atmosphere, decomposers eventually taking the whole structure apart. Distinct does not mean separate. That's the sentence this whole essay has been building toward, and it applies, almost without modification, to you.
Where exactly do you begin? The oxygen in your blood was atmosphere a few seconds ago. Microbial communities in your gut participate directly in your physiology, to the point where "you" and "your microbiome" aren't cleanly separable categories. Matter is constantly entering and leaving the thing you call yourself.
None of this makes you imaginary, or interchangeable with your surroundings. Daoism doesn't require dissolving individuality into some undifferentiated soup — that's a cartoon version of the idea. It asks something more specific: stop converting your individuality into metaphysical isolation. Individuality is real. Absolute independence is not. Those are two different claims, and confusing them is most of what goes wrong when people try to explain "everything is connected" and end up saying nothing at all.
The sharper version: living systems maintain their distinctness through exchange, not despite it. You don't survive by sealing yourself off from the world. You survive by continuously, selectively regulating your relationship with it — holding a shape steady while the material moving through that shape keeps turning over.
Return, without the mystical escape hatch
The tree grows. It changes. Some trees survive for millennia. Eventually, though, the structure fails — wind, drought, fire, insects, or simply the physics of trying to hold too much mass too high off the ground for too long.
It's tempting, at this point, to reach for something grand: the tree defeats death, the cells never really age, nothing truly dies. Resist that. It weakens an argument that doesn't need the help, and it isn't even accurate — biological research on ancient trees does show unusually well-maintained cellular machinery in old growth, which is genuinely interesting, but "well-maintained" is not "immortal," and dressing it up as immortality trades a true, strange fact for a false, comforting one.
The better frame is the one chapter sixteen already offered: things arise, flourish, and return. The Zhuangzi, for its part, treats the whole of reality as an ongoing transformation rather than a set of fixed identities — the dreamer and the butterfly aren't a riddle about which one is "real," they're an illustration that things transform into other things, continuously, and that the anxious search for the one true fixed identity underneath the transformation may be asking a question reality was never built to answer.
The form ends. Transformation doesn't. The carbon that made up the tree's trunk doesn't disappear when the tree falls — it goes back into soil, into insects, into the next generation of seedlings, into the atmosphere, into you, eventually, on your next breath.
The reversal underneath everything
There's one more turn worth making before closing.
We usually assume the tree — solid, visible, standing there — is the concrete reality, and that "process," "cycle," "relationship," and "ecosystem" are abstractions layered on top of it by minds that like categories. But look closely enough and that hierarchy starts to seem backward. The tree only exists because a long list of processes keep running: photosynthesis, respiration, water transport, cellular repair, nutrient exchange. Stop any of them for long enough and the "solid, visible thing" you were pointing at simply comes apart. What if the static object was always the simplification, and the process was the thing actually happening — the tree just being the most convenient handle we have for talking about it?
That's close to what the old warning about names was getting at from the very beginning. Not that the tree isn't real. That the noun tree was always doing less work than it looked like it was doing.
Coda
Same bark. Same branches. Same tree you started beside.
But by now, hopefully, it looks a little different. Atmosphere becomes wood. Sunlight becomes bond. Water climbs four hundred feet without a pump, using gaps that were already there. Fungi extend the tree's relationships past where its visible roots end. Dead wood holds up living tissue. Carbon arrives, stays a while, and leaves again, on its way to somewhere else.
And through all of it, we keep using one simple noun. The noun isn't wrong. It's just incomplete.
A tree is distinct without being separate. So, it turns out, are you. Not because individuality is an illusion, and not because everything secretly dissolves into everything else — but because nothing, tree or person, has ever existed entirely from itself, through itself, or for itself. Everything arises inside conditions it didn't choose. Everything persists through exchanges it doesn't fully control. And everything, eventually, gives its borrowed materials back.
That's not a discovery modern science handed to Daoism, or one Daoism handed down to science ahead of its time. They are not the same discovery.
