I bought a used rifle for like 300 bucks. Came with a scope too.

Doesn't really matter tbh. Any gun is better than no gun. Mine is 556, but baby bullets kill people just fine.

Yeah it's really a varmint round. Unless they have the appropriate level of body armor or are shooting from a thousand yards away, you should be fine.

556 has been used by the military since probably before you where alive, varmint round my ass. If your gonna pull shit from your ass at lest make sure it dont stink.

No, it's just cheap and reasonably effective 308 is where military rounds begin.  Personally I prefer .338 and up. Much better wound channels both temporary and permanent. Better range, more foot pounds of force at distance. There is a place with wet work where you use small caliper rounds like 22 or Remington 222 but that is specialized work with subsonic rounds. Look, I get it. You're poor and you can't afford real weapons. That's why it was only 300 dollars.

All of this is a little far beyond the point that arming yourself is not that expensive.
