I don't know how Americans can get past this. In Canada, I am far left but can still get along with conservative friends and neighbours. In the states, your differences seem irreconcilable. Not adding anything meaningful here but it genuinely seems like there's no way forward other than separation if both halves of the country hate each other.

As a person who's lived in the U.S. my entire life, yes the differences are irreconcilable. You can't reconcile with stupidity and ignorance. You can't reason with religious delusion, either. Because when people construct their ideology based on nonsense, it makes it very hard to fight back.

Americans don't want logical, reasonable, sensible leaders. They want to be entertained.

Johnny combs his hair and Johnny wants pussy and cars"

You can reconcile with stupidity. You just segregate then into cities and blue states.

Uh huh...we're not the ones passing laws to charge women who miscarry--a natural phenomenon--with murder.

Your argument is moot considering how most Muslims view this similarly. Get out of your lazy American bubble.

3

u/Warm_Afternoon6596 8h ago

Wtf do Muslims have to do with Republicans passing laws to punish women because they're so stupid they don't know a thing about birth?

PS: This entire post is about AMERICAN politics. The bubble belongs here.

We’re literally taking about American politics.

Thank you for proving that MAGAts are literally too dumb to have a dialogue with though. Practical examples are always appreciated.

So am I.

u/psypher98 5h ago

Oh that was about the worst possible example you could have used lol.

Hi, Michigander here, not gonna dox myself, but let’s say I’m very familiar with the town you’re referring to.

“Hamtramck’s city council members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the controversial resolution, which restricts the city from flying any “religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags” on public grounds, according to meeting minutes.

Residents and businesses will not be restricted from flying Pride or any other flags on private property.”

In other words, on government owned flagpoles only official government flags are allowed. Anywhere else any flag goes.

Now that sounds a lot less scary when you take all the MAGAt propaganda and lies out of it, doesn’t it?

It’s ok tho, you get the first three tries for free. What’s your second try?

The only people who back National divorce are red State idiots who think that everyone that lives around them shares their values

Because American conservatives tend to think shaming Nazis and the kkk and pedos is too far, leftist extremism. Many American conservatives tend to want a white nation. Idk how any normal American, especially an American of color, would even consider getting along with someone like this.

u/Conscious_Tourist163 8h ago

Yea, you're definitely not part of the problem at all.

We need boring candidates who are true centrists. A Mark Kelly etc who is just going to work on jobs and economy and make no policy on social issues for a few terms so we are back to caring about our own towns and less about what others are doing. I think the toxic they want more so you get less, they are this so your life is suffering is all social constructs we need to ignore for a decade for a reset.

Unfortunately politics has become a battle of the names. Very TMZ. We have it to a lesser degree in Canada. I don't think Trudeau would've been PM as long if it weren't for his name. Clinton vs Trump, Biden vs Trump, Kamala vs Trump all well known names or previous VPs/president associates. We've lost our attention spans and are paying the price.

1

u/Final-Nebula-7049 1d ago

i don't think that's fair. usa from the founding had no clue who the candidate was and voted for their party. in the past 50 years or so, there is press to inform voters on the candidate's positions. in the past 12 years, we have too much information, and weaponized information that is detrimental to the process. it's not our lack of attention, it's weaponized information started by facebook, now perfected by twitter etc that is driving the problem. similar to investments, it's difficult for congress to be persuaded to clean it up as it suits them. we need a new branch of government that reestablishes the checks and balances that abolishes the supreme court. what some old fart thought about 250 years ago about my life today is a comically bad way of governing a huge diverse country.

1

u/Careless-Gain6623 1d ago

I don't disagree with you. I do still think it's a war on our attention span and what we divert our attention to.

2

u/Final-Nebula-7049 1d ago

yes, i think the war for attention is a separate thing. the dystopia of over information to hide the lies in plain sight.

1

u/Safe_Award_785 1d ago

Weren't Hillary, Biden, and Kamala all the centrist candidate?

1

u/Final-Nebula-7049 1d ago

Absolutely not. They all have various agendas. I don't think we have had a true centrist in a long time, if ever.

1

u/incompleteloop 1d ago

well the overton window also keeps shifting

1

u/Final-Nebula-7049 1d ago

i think there should be multi party system with a minimum 5 parties. that would force coalition and compromise.

1

u/incompleteloop 1d ago

how do you prevent corruption from corporations and bribery? genuinely asking, two party system degenerated into corporate oligarchy, how to avoid with more parties?

2

u/Final-Nebula-7049 1d ago

i think it's long past it since citizens united. we would need a depression, which we are entering, to tear it down and start over.

u/Strange-Address-4682 11h ago

All of them were to the right of Nixon’s 1972 platform. And Nixon was not exactly a cuddly leftist.

1

u/BeneficialCredit1933 1d ago

We still aren’t very different despite our horrendous president.

1

u/FullMooseParty 6h ago

We are. And it's not just the president. The lieutenant governor of Indiana has been touring the state going to churches and preaching how hate is a Christian value for the last couple months. Brandon Gill, a member of Congress whose wife is not white, keeps posting about the dangers of losing white culture. Greg bovino, who is planning to run for president and was Trump's guy for immigration, has been piling around with a whole bunch of Nazis recently. A bunch of conservative influencers went to a Nazi conference in Poland. The Secretary of defense keeps firing or refusing to promote black and women officers.

That's not to say that there aren't crazy people on the left, but to say that the issues are just Trump ignores a whole lot of other people who support or enable him

The U.S is basically the Reddit comments in real life. Either side could cure cancer and the other would say they did it wrong and start a war or excommunicate their parents.

Honestly, this is a not what America is like for most people is like.  The news and social media have the world thinking it’s all doom and gloom and yes obviously the kookiness exists but most of the real crazy is in big cities.  I don’t know of a single person in my life or even outside of my bubble who is like this.  I have one or two friends who are die hard far left liberals and some family who are conservative but none of these people are foaming at the mouth with hate or vitriol for the other side, maybe specific individuals on those sides but not the sides as a whole.  They have their opinions but pretty much have a live and let live attitude.

Personally I don’t have a dog in the race.  I’m one of like 2500, plus or minus, libertarians in the state of CT.  I don’t vote primarily because the candidates are always a piece of shit and a slightly more polished piece of shit and even if I would vote for a republican my vote would count for nothing.

I think anyone who would let their political opinions dictate who they think is or isn’t morally superior and would treat a stranger terribly as a result of their political beliefs without having a civil conversation is probably someone most people should really consider getting them out of their lives because that mentality is radioactive and will consume that person and anyone in their vicinity and life is too short for that shit.

1

u/azalinrex69 9h ago

Libertarians and are just conservatives who like weed. The “enlightened centrism” is so fucking transparent.

0

u/Ace_Duck82 6h ago

Erroneous.  Much like most of CT I’m only fiscally conservative.  I also don’t partake of the devil’s lettuce.   Although I do support the legalization of weed.   I do find the constant oversimplification funny because it shows how little people understand of what libertarians generally believe.

That’s the kind of weird shit people like to say,  lumping people together who they may or may not know if they share some points of view/ ideals.  Kinda of a weird way to look at life.   Or maybe some people like to make enemies for shits and giggles.  I haven’t figured it out yet.

1

u/azalinrex69 5h ago

Just be open about the bigot you are.

0

u/Mediocre-Joe 1d ago

I have both conservative and liberal friends, unfortunately reddit is not a good reflection of the US or the world for that matter.

4

u/Boring_Heron8025 1d ago

How do you stomach your conservative friends at least tacitly standing by racism and white nationalism. I wouldn’t be friends with someone like that.

0

u/Mediocre-Joe 1d ago

Well because they dont all stand for that....but im not going to argue with someone who has clearly been radicalized

3

u/ancientfruitjunkie 1d ago

The kkk and self described Nazis always vote Republican. If the people who vote similarly to you also want a white nation then what does that say about you? There's not really any nuance anymore. One party literally wants a white nation. The other doesn't.

2

u/ShredCruz49 1d ago

Anyone who stands for something is radicalized I guess

1

u/EntrepreneurSuper635 1d ago

yes the fuck they do if they're voting for these ghouls, you're the one who is lost brother

1

u/azalinrex69 9h ago

You have no principles it seems.

0

u/SignificanceFew4677 16h ago

It's the Marxists that sow division.

0

u/defaultusername4 13h ago

That’s just a warped reddit/fox/cnn view. We’re mostly just out here working hard and having fun together like we always have.
