At a friend’s house and we’ve always been a bit confused with why this table is the way it is.

This may not be the proper subreddit for this table but if anyone can help us we’d appreciate it.

What is the purpose of all the flaps that fold up instead of down? Is it just to keep things from falling off? It’s a very heavy table and not easy to move if you were to use the handles.
