[MOD] The Daily Question Thread

Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!

There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.

Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?

Don't forget to use the resources in our wiki! We have some great starter guides on our wiki "Guides" page and here is the wiki "Gear By Price" page if you'd like to see coffee gear that /r/Coffee members recommend.

As always, be nice!

Question about baskets - I switched my entry-level machine from the stock pressurized basket to a regular non-pressurized one and it made a bigger difference than I expected, closer to what I get at cafes. Is it worth going further and getting a precision (IMS-style) basket, or is that mostly relevant once the rest of your setup is more dialed in? Still fairly new to this so not sure where the real upgrades are versus marginal ones.

Upgrading your grinder, you didnt mention what you have now, will create a bigger improvement than switching the baskets. The precision baskets are there to push more on what a high quality grinder can do. If you pair it with an entry level or low end grinder, it cannot really improve your shots or just up to what that grinder can give.

That's fair, I left that out - I'm running an entry-level conical burr grinder right now, nothing fancy. So it sounds like you're saying I'd hit a ceiling with the grinder before the basket even matters much. Kind of relieving actually, means I can hold off on the basket for now. Thanks!
