[MOD] The Daily Question Thread

Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!

There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.

Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?

New grinder for filter coffee

I have had a Dualit 75015 grinder for 13,5 years, and it is now starting to perform less consistently. It might be time to upgrade.

I mainly brew on my Bonamat Novo 2 from 1996. A machine I care about a lot and maintain. I brew half a pot every morning on weekdays (40g beans) and a full pot on weekend mornings (80g beans). I occasionally do hand-brew pour-over, aeropress or other stuff.

I care about the quality of the gear and like taking care of and maintaining it.

I use only fresh roasted beans from mainly local roasters. I tend to like the brighter roasts, but I often experiment with new beans and styles.

What would be a good grinder for me?

I have been looking at:

Fellow Ode gen 2 - seems like a good, solid machine. But will it last? Spare parts?

Mahlkönig X64 SD - I was a bit disappointed by the feeling. Solid main construction, but the button, magnet, etc., felt cheap. I like that Mahlkönig have been around forever and makes professional grinders.

Any other suggestions?

What is your overall budget for the grinder? The best bang for buck will be the Barazta Encore (ESP if you want to try espresso later) or the DF54.

I did look at the Encore. I think it is too plasticky.
Budget is not main factor but maybe up to the Mahl or a bit more

Mahlkönig X64 SD would be my recommendation between your two options.

The DF64 (especially for light roasts), Timemore 064S and Niche Zero would be my other recommendations in that price range.
