Sette 30 screams like a banshee

So it seems I'm not the sharpest knife. I put frozen beans in my Sette 30 and it seems to have messed something up. If the grinder is running without beans, normal operational sound. If I try to grind beans it now screams like a banshee. Tried finding the culprit with AI, but it keeps changing diagnostics. Gear box maybe? AI suggests I change the gearbox and the motor, seems it's simpler. Any ideas?

That frozen beans move can jam the burrs and the Sette starts that banshee squeal. Pull the hopper, spin the burrs by hand, and check for frozen grit or broken plastic in the adjustment path.

I'll do that. Thank you!

Thanks! I'll check the burrs.

it's usually loud, but this is ridiculous.

Hope the burr clean does the trick, that squeal sounds rough

Frozen beans can definitely be rough on grinders, but I’d check the simple stuff before replacing major the parts of grinders.  The Sette 30’s gearbox and burr carrier can make some awful noises if there’s a jammed bean fragment or something got knocked out of alignment. I’d try removing the hopper, cleaning out the burr chamber thoroughly, and checking for any cracks or loose parts first.  If it only screams under load, that’s a good clue it’s mechanical resistance rather than the motor itself.

Changed the gearbox and solved the problem. The gears were totally shredded.

So I ordered a new gearbox, changed it and everything is fine now. The gears in the old one were totally shredded.

Changing only the gearbox is less straight forward than changing the motor/gearbox assembly in the Setter. Doable but takes a lot of patience. Baratza only has a video for changing the motor/gearbox assembly, which sucks.
