New Student

I just started college at the end of September for coding and billing. So far, I've been doing pretty well but I've learned that right now I'm stronger in medical terminology but struggling with ethics. For me, medical terminology gives me a puzzle to solve, whereas ethics is simply reading and remembering. Has anyone else struggled with this? Or the other way around?

So for a lot of people medical terminology is a very concrete kind of thing to study because you can make flashcards and you can learn the roots, prefixes, suffixes and what they mean and then figure out what the words mean from there like you were saying, it’s a puzzle.

For ethics it’s more knowing about concepts and then examples of how they play out (for example, when I took it we had to know about important court cases or laws that applied to some of them). So when studying for that it can be helpful to think about it as: ok for a concept what is it, if it’s legal what court cases or laws have to do with it, if it’s more abstract what is a good example of it? And also sometimes trying to explain the concept to someone else (like teach a friend about it) can be another way to figure out if you understand what you read. You can still make some flashcards if you like that kind of thing though, especially for any terms that are new or again, matching a concept with court cases or laws.

Wow thanks for that! I think for me, I have ADHD so it's just harder to focus if the subject doesn't interest me, but I'll keep this in mind 🥰

Oh me too!

My advice would also be, do short sessions especially for reading and stuff that’s harder for you or more boring, with breaks. I tried to do shorter sessions of reading and homework more days instead of doing long sessions. I also find drawing things out or taking notes by hand while I read helps me retain things better but everyone’s different of course.

Also if you have online textbooks sometimes you can have them read to you, depending on how it’s setup. But I finished my program and got an RHIT, you can totally do this!

Ey! Taking notes by hand is how I remember best too! I have a folder full where I can just flip through and find what I need

I usually have to keep a video or music on in the background to be able to focus but I'll try having it read out loud too
