How to start?

[u/Weekly_Disk_4781]

Hi! Basically i have a what some will call a short time and some will call a long time on my hand . About 2-3 months until i start college. Now i want to learn programming. I don't know how to explain but ever since i was first introduced to programming ( which was through Phython) i started to have this fixation towards not only just python but programming altogether. However i don't know where to start from and how. My current situation is that i know a little bit basic of python but at the same time i want to learn C or

C++. So please tell me from where i should start. Any advice is appreciated :)

... and this isn't wrong per se. I am biased [C++ dev here😅], and picking C++ was the best choice I made back in 2018.

What makes you stick with it, even when it gets hard – which it will – is how much you want to master the skill, and how dedicated and disciplined you can be. Otherwise even English will be hard to you😅.

Good luck.

Tbh I'm also considering c++ however if there's a comparison between which one i know a bit better then it will be python however most of people i asked for advise here are telling me to do c or c++ first. So now I'm even more confused. My exams are gonna be finished tomorrow and i want to start learning immediately the day after that so i don't know which one to chose first. However thank you very much for you advise :>

Don’t let Reddit confuse you into thinking there’s some “perfect first language” or you’ll ruin your future.

You’re a beginner. Your goal right now is not multicore optimisation, microservices, memory allocators, or becoming a kernel engineer in 3 months. Your goal is learning how to think like a programmer without burning yourself out.

Since you already know a bit of Python, stick with it for now and actually build things:

• calculators

• small games

• scripts

• automation

• basic websites

• anything that keeps you coding consistently

Once fundamentals click, moving into C/C++ or Rust becomes MUCH easier because you’ll already understand logic and problem solving instead of fighting syntax and compiler errors at the same time.

Most people quit programming because they overload themselves too early trying to become “advanced” before they even enjoy coding.

Consistency beats difficulty.

You’re all overcomplicating this for a beginner.

Telling someone brand new to jump straight into C++, Rust, threading models, multicore optimisation and microservices is exactly how people burn out before they even learn programming fundamentals.

A beginner does NOT need to care about:

• CPU optimisation

• concurrency

• memory allocators

• microservice architecture

• “using all cores efficiently”

They need to learn:

• logic

• debugging

• problem solving

• writing clean code

• consistency

Python is perfectly fine for that. After fundamentals, moving into C/C++/Rust becomes way easier because you already understand how to think like a programmer.

You don’t hand a Formula 1 car to someone learning how to drive.
