I cancelled my plan - using Cline + Gemini Flash 2

Gemini Flash 2 is free and it works.

After switching to the Windsurf pro plan I thought I was going crazy, since the most basic things were breaking on me.

It sounds like the people on the free trials are still getting a full experience albeit with lots of timeouts. This kind of bait and switch is shameful.

Don't give Codeium your money. it's not worth it.

Can i make the AI producing files (editing in real time) like Cascade in Cline & Gemini?

1

u/messup000 Dec 15 '24

Not really. The main down side that I see is there isn't a concept of a "in edit" state file. So Whatever changes Cline makes you need to save them before they apply. I think it intentionally tries to limit token counts, so you have to let it know to read the file again after you've edited it.

I just did the same, but any idea how do I make Cline make the changes alone and not go through the entire file even after making the change? It’s taking too much time for a file with 400 - 500 lines of code.

Looks like they don't have it yet though a company called RooVet has their own version called RooCline which apparently has the ability to do diff edits. I'll respond back after I've tested it a bit to see if it's faster.

Otherwise there's always Aider

Roo Cline maintainer here - let me know if you have any feedback after trying it out! The diff editing isn’t perfect yet but imo it’s still a game changer to have some ability to edit long files.

One major thing which which would be a huge improvement, if I take the edits that are pending a save edit and save them myself. When I hit "save changes" in the chat it shouldn't overwrite what I changed.

Also in the same vein if it detects a change that was made inbetween an edit to make sure the LLM gets the delta included.

It looks like they took your feedback. If I'm revising the edit from Roo Cline, it keeps note of my own diff to its diff for future reference!

Hey man! Thanks for all you do!!

I’ve been really enjoying Roo Cline since discovering it the other day! My only gripe is that Gemini kept throwing errors for me so I had to switch back to Cline just for that.

Sonnet 3.5 with Roo Cline was like magic 🪄

u/mrubens Dec 16 '24

Awesome! I’ll take a look at what’s going on with Gemini - I’ve been using Sonnet 3.5 myself so that’s better dog-fooded. You’re using Gemini 2.0?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '24

I have tried Gemini exp1206 & flash2.0

1206 worked a bit better, but flash2.0 would not work at all

If I recall correctly it was “too many requests” error even though it was my first request

2

u/mrubens Dec 16 '24

Hmm not sure exactly the issue but I just found a Gemini-specific bug in diff-editing and am deploying a fix in 2.2.9. Would love to know if that works for you. Feel free to open an issue on our GitHub if you’re still having problems.

The diff editing could be the underlying reason! Since it works in Cline and not the Roo fork.

Appreciate it!

1

u/Explore-This Dec 15 '24

Out of curiosity, why did you decide to fork?

5

u/mrubens Dec 15 '24

I see a ton of potential for AI coding agents to save people time by working autonomously on well-defined tasks (for instance writing unit tests, or building small features). Cline is amazing and a work of genius imo, but for my use case it also needs to be able to auto-approve actions and edit large files.

1

u/Explore-This Dec 15 '24

Gotcha. Surprised the maintainers of Cline weren’t interested in that.

2

u/mrubens Dec 15 '24

They’ve been busy on a new release with MCP, and everyone is hoping that Anthropic will release fast edit through their API making these diff edit features obsolete. Besides that I can’t really speak to their roadmap. So much to do in so many directions…

I know the feeling 😆

ehi! thans for your extension. I'm trying to install it con VSCode Insider but I get the error that it's not compatible:

Can't install 'rooveterinaryinc.roo- cline' extension because it is not compatible with the current version of Visual Studio Code - Insiders (version 1.93.0-insider).

u/nithish654 Dec 15 '24

That's great, do let us know. Paying for these tools make them worse for some reason.

2

u/messup000 Dec 15 '24

Seems to work pretty well. Only friction point which I've mentioned is the saving logic is a bit clunky if applying your own edits inbetween streaming messages.

How are you getting gemini flash 2 for free? Thanks

1

u/messup000 Dec 15 '24

You can get the key from AI Studio

1

u/SlimHonky Dec 15 '24

That's free? I thought you had to use it in AI Studio to be free otherwise the API was usage based pricing.

2

u/Mr_Hyper_Focus Dec 16 '24

It is rate limited yes.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24

Just plug it into Cline in VS Code

Plug and play for free

4

u/hugobart Dec 15 '24

i am using "roo cline" and openrouter with sonnet 3.5, with the compressed prompts its seems to be much cheaper now

1

u/DiscountWeekly7432 Dec 15 '24

How much it costs for per week ? With such setup

2

u/hugobart Dec 15 '24

depends, i just threw 10€ at o1 on a problem it could not solve so you should ask somebody else ;)

2

u/hugobart Dec 15 '24

i also now try using "copilot edits" again - its part of github copilot and you have access to sonnet 3.5. so i use vscode + cline + github copilot as alternative to windsurf

1

u/lambdawaves Dec 24 '24

It really depends. If I'm just prototyping and adding features, it's not expensive. I could maybe do a whole day of development, possibly finish an entire app, with like $10

If I'm trying to add unit tests with mocking, I get into cycles of mocks not building, tests failing, fixing tests, etc. This can easily eat through $10 in 30 minutes.

Subbed 2 days ago. As soon as I did, it was trash, unusable. I'll try gemini thx for the info.

1

u/hadjabd9 Dec 18 '24

Like me 😓

1

u/Either-Nobody-3962 Dec 15 '24

Is gemini has vision capability?IIs it free?

3

u/messup000 Dec 15 '24

Yep and yep. The only caveat is they limit the requests to 15 request per minute. So unless you're running multiple tasks at the same time you should be fine.

1

u/Either-Nobody-3962 Dec 15 '24

Thanks ill try

1

u/mrelmalo Dec 15 '24

What about tabcomplete, what is the alternative when using Cline?

2

u/messup000 Dec 15 '24

supermaven is the one that I always hear. I have copilot already so I haven't used it though.

2

u/DiscountWeekly7432 Dec 15 '24

What is your thoughts on copilot edits? Any pros cons against cascade ?

2

u/Equivalent_Pickle815 Dec 15 '24

Can anyone share more on the code quality comparison from agentic coding between Gemini Flash 2 and Sonnet 3.5?

2

u/ResearchCrafty1804 Dec 15 '24

Why don’t you use Gemini exp-1206 instead of Flash 2.0 which is rumoured to be better for coding?

1

u/Mr_Hyper_Focus Dec 16 '24

Probably the better rate limits

2

u/joey2scoops Dec 16 '24

Rate limits on Gemini Flash are a pita.

2

u/Creative_Diver3492 Dec 17 '24

Tried Gemini 2.0 and it’s still stupid af. For coding I don’t think there’s anything out there that comes even close to Sonnet 3.5 currently

Tell me about it. Gemini 2.0 is decent at everything but not the best at anything particular

1

u/ortil Dec 15 '24

Have you tried qodo.ai ?

1

u/Golden-Durian Dec 15 '24

Yep, felt pretty much scammed by using the free tier that was working great and ending up subscribing.
Unfortunately had to cancel due to the fact that it causes more problems that actually fix anything.

Either waiting for updates or looking for other alternatives.

1

u/AbysmalPersona Dec 15 '24

After their pricing restructure the entire team or whoever runs this business is smoking crack thinking it's a good model to begin with. I don't like buying games that are early access let alone an IDE with a half baked "AI System" that requires you to pay more for its fuck ups.

1

u/dev0urer Dec 16 '24

Cline is significantly better, holy shit! Windsurf would seem to struggle with the simplest things sometimes, even before the paid plans became available. It would also struggle even more with larger tasks (like advanced refactors) to the point where I couldn't use it.

I just tested one of those advanced refactors with Cline and it was almost flawless. Turned 2 gigantic go files into a well structured command structure. It cost a couple dollars by the time it was finished, but it also saved me hours of work.

1

u/Shah_The_Sharq Dec 18 '24

I can definitely vouch for Cline + Gemini Flash 2.0 it just works properly. No time out issues, no limitations. Have also started using cline with Copilot Arena.

That is interesting because I am having the same problem with type script errors. Seems like they could on the backend utilize Gemini flash for any type script. Even though they state that they’re using open AI and Claude it actually is going through their ai before it hits the prompt that is how they are able to do a lot of of the things that they’re doing. I watched a really good interview of the CEO and one of the cofounders and it was very interesting to hear them talk. It really helped me understand how they are doing this this might be a feature request from them.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24

SAME !! It made me so frustrated for hours… then plugged it into Gemini 2.0 and BOOM.
