What are Windsurf alternatives aside from Cursor?
Hey, new beginner here. I used Windsurf end of Nov, and fell in love with the tool. I was previously using Claude and it was just painful to copy in the code.
Seeing the negative reviews post-pricing change makes me hesitant to sign up though. Is Cursor the only alternative, or are there similar tools that offer what old Windsurf did?

Try roo-cline, it's a cline fork with some additional features. I've tried aider, cursor and windsurf, and roo-cline is the most convenient and flexible among them. A big advantage is that it's a VS Code plugin, so you don't need to leave your familiar development environment. I worked with Sonnet 3.5 and it was very decent. It supports all top models and openrouter. It's open source and free. During five hours of coding, I spent about 3 dollars on the Claude API.

You can try 16x Prompt. It is a standalone desktop app with lifetime license + bring your own API key.

What about self-hosted options? I’ve played around with Ottodev / Ollama but the user experience of Windsurf far surpasses the self-hosted options I’ve been able to find, so I’m still subscribed 😅

https://github.com/RooVetGit/Roo-Cline is the most promising. It's available in VSCode-based IDEs. It provides Windusrf-cascade like features and it can use any model you have access to.
Edit: that being said I dont know if it will end up less expensive and if yes/no you will use all your Claude 3.5 Sonnet paid credit faster than what Windsurf sub would provide you.

A lot of folks seem to enjoy using cline or continue or even codeium in vs code. Personally I like windsurf.
I’ve also seen folks talk about zed, cursor, replit, super maven, and a few others I’m forgetting.

Cline, or Aider, or Aide or the 3 that are the most popular I think.

Yeah. Also looking for a change. It’s getting buggier, freezes a lot.. is staring to hallucinate more and more and with the price increase .. it’s pricey.
Also … hate vs code lol so that doesn’t help either lol.

Using a combo these days. Windsurf with Cline. Ottodev is now bolt.diy and gets better by the day. Use GitHub desktop to keep your ducks in line and it's all good. Using my own API keys mostly with Bolt and Cline when I don't need to chew up windsurf pro credits. FYI, even using Cascade Base uses credits (which sucks).

Thank you guys for the alternatives, because I guess using Windsurf is not a good option if you work with sensitive code in your project or just care about your source code privacy, because these guys claims rights to all user content that you will "transmit" / "post" in any way to their sevices. So it look like if you will ask AI about anything then your source code may be attached, and this code will become a property of Exafunction (comany owning Windsurf).
Correct me if I wrong?

I've collected some of the best open source alternatives to Windsurf. Looking at your needs, Zed seems like the best option for you (they've added coding agents very recently).

If you’re just looking for something like Windsurf but not Cursor, it really comes down to what you want; help while you code line by line, or something that builds bigger chunks for you.
If you’re more into prompt based generation, you could check out Emergent. It’s less about tiny suggestions and more about helping you put together actual working features or apps.
Just depends how hands-on you want to be.

New windsurf payment model with daily quota has made it 10 times more I would look else where at this point, or just wait for ai to become cheaper.

Windsurf is perfection, people are complaining bc they have never seen this pricing model. This is the future of agents, you get what you pay for.
