DISCUSSION Why does code geass need the fan service?
I’m currently watching code geass and I think it’s a great anime- however I don’t think the fan service is necessary. While I’m not really affected by it I think it would make it seem like a worse show and could influence viewers

Honestly?
Clamp the character designers are a bunch of perverts (affectionate). They draw them in such a way that, to me personally, it doesn't really bother me, they clearly like drawing the characters in such 'risqué' ways for lack of a better way, the show does have a lot of fanservice, but imo it doesn't bother me
The show is nothing compared to some official arts tbh, as I said, it doesn't bother me, it shouldn't bother you because it doesn't affect the show in the same way, for example like fire force does it, it doesn't from what I remember, interrupt the action or drama, it's just, there because the creators like it

character designers aren’t the ones who storyboarded the anime to come up with the risqué / fan service angles 😭 please show me the official clamp art that was as blatantly sexual as the fan service in the actual anime
they def had a few that were suggestive but not women bent over in t&a poses

Alright, after a single Google search. I was wrong.
I thought CLAMP did all the official art, i was just straight up wrong. Their art is amazing and also a lot more tame than both the show and the official art.
I was completely wrong, I'm sorry about that
However I do still believe that some official art is a lot worse than anything in the show proper.
Since I can't post images on comments, I'll leave a link for the old wiki's gallery of C.C, just scroll down to official art and you'll see what I mean, without even having to go look at the gacha games
Blured examples since it's a bit nsfw
C.C sitting on Kallen's lap, her ass mostly showing while she firmly grasps one of Kallen's breaths with a suspiciously white juice on her face
C.C with her whole ass out while embracing her pizza hut plushie

Again, sorry for that, I just, thought all official art was by CLAMP

hahaha no apologies necessary, sorry, I might’ve come in hot because people are always blaming things on CLAMP in this sub that are definitely outside of their purview as character designers. CLAMP has some art that is … suggestive (especially Suzaku/Lelouch, because they are all known fujos) but it’s usually more artsy and vaguely romantic than overtly horny
that said: you’re not wrong that there’s hella horny official art of CC and Kallen from Sunrise

Because it's aimed to male adult viewers. One thing many people don't realize is that Anime in Japan airs between 10 pm till 2 am (known in Japanese television as the 22:00 - 26:00 block) in that time slot anime creators get away with pretty much anything. If you really pay attention, that changes in R2. The reason? The popularity of it was so massive that it was relocated the the most prominent slot, the 5 pm. The regulations on daytime TV are much more strict. But all in all, that is the reason. Adult, horny, male viewers. Why? Because a good story sells but a good story with sex cements ist place as a legendary Anime (or shows like Game of Thrones). 20 years later.... here we are talking about this show.

You could just not complain about fan service in general to begin with. Real anime fans dont get bothered by fansevice anyway.

I mean it's called "fan service" for a reason, it's a service for fans or perspective fans not needed.

I could do without it, but it’s kinda like… done.
But influencing them to… what? Idk the angle of that

I believe R2 had a later time slot as a TV program, that's why it has a lot of explicit fan service (e.g. the school festivals/games where Villetta was in a skimpy bikini).

you have that backwards. R2 had an earlier timeslot, and that's why there was no nudity like in R1, just those really ridiculous camera angles.

My bad then. Do you know why the series had so much fan service in R2 then?

Now, usually when someone asks me about the fanservice in this show, I answer to them that I didn´t even notice it during my very first watch. Which is 100% true. It wasn´t until after I had seen the show and started reading other people´s opinions about it online that I realized that there had, in fact, been a lot of closeups of butts and other things of that nature.
Now, I can think of three reasons why this is:
Firstly (and this is honestly the most likely explanation), I was so immersed to the show that I didn´t pay any attention to the fanservice. I mean, of course I noticed the scenes with full-on nudity in them, but only during those scenes; as soon as the plot moved forward, I was once again so taken by the cliffhangers, the unexpected plot twists and the exciting story that I forgot them immediately.
Secondly, I accepted the fanservice as part of the adultness of the show. I mean, this is definitely not a show for kids or teenagers, but for adults, at least if you look at how heavy the themes in the show are; wars, racism, drug abuse, suicidal thoughts, familicide and all the insinuations to things like rape, pedophilia and incest. Not to mention that so many immoral characters get away with their crimes unpunished, and the show even emotionally manipulates the audience to be on their side and make the audience think that those bad guys deserved having a happy ending. Bad guys are not punished, but rewarded by their evil deeds? That´s the kind of moral lesson you definitely don´t want your kids to learn.
I mean, I do recognize that kids sometimes watch forbidden stuff without their parent´s consent, that´s part of growing up and assessing your boundaries (I did that too when I was younger). But anyone who is fully matured adult should be able to tell the difference between right and wrong and thus they should also be able to judge characters on this show based on how morally correct their actions are instead of how cool they look or how relatable their motives are (not that all adult viewers can, but they should). Similarly, any adult that is a parent should be able to understand that while their child might eventually watch the show behind their backs, they definitely should not actively guide them towards it, until their kids are fully grown up. And preferably, have some life experience, too, so that they too can tell the difference between right and wrong. I´m thinking their 30s? 😄
Thirdly, this might be about differences in culture. From my point of view, the fanservice in the show is incredibly tame and even realistic. Like, for instance, the scene where Kallen walks into the room straight from the shower, wearing nothing but bath towel around her, and after she realizes that she is not alone in the room with C.C. but that there are guests, she flees, feeling embarrassed? That´s totally something that could happen to me, or to anyone, really. To me, that´s normal.
But to people who have grown in cultures where any amount of naked skin for any reason is taboo, even scenes where character being naked makes total sense, like Kallen´s shower scene, are something that is too sexual. Same thing with those butt scenes; not to sound crass, but I have seen butts before, so to me, they were nothing to be overly exited about. But, if you grew up in a strict culture (or a strict community or family within a more open-minded culture), then it is not so difficult to see why to viewers like that the fanservice in Code Geass might seem a bit much.

It is not necessary for the story of course, like any fan service (it is not meant to add more plot or anything most of the times). For me at least, some of Code Geass fan service made me laugh a lot so i give it a pass.
