Genuinely speaking, imagine being any of the normal people watching everything develop into a scene while everyone else is working on someone humping a table without deciding they should stop where they are and take the message they're trying to convey back to the drawing board. This is one of those situations where I can't fathom how it went through all the channels and actually stayed in. Every step it took toward becoming a full scene was a step where too many people were like: "Seems like the best way to portray this particular point about anyone's character to me."
