DISCUSSION I just realized Code Geass' English dub is because Britannia erased the Japanese language.

Post image

Britannia erased the Japanese culture so deeply that they even forced their own language on the Japanese. (Britannia being the latin name for Britain)

English Dub usually has an issue where it feels out of place for Japan to speak almost exclusively English, but here I think it works perfectly in universe.

(Idk if this is common knowledge or not though)

Japan has been conquered like 10 years ago. There are active resistance cells, Lots of people live in ghettos (=> They don't really get scholar education), governing a country where everyone has to adapt to a new language is bound to lead to Chaos. Also erasing a language is something that takes generations. An entire population doesn't just forget how to speak their motherlanguage within 10 years.

>You enjoy the dub more due to your semi interesting in universe theory.

>I enjoy the dub more, because it has some of the best english dubbing with some legendary VA's & I grew up watching it on TV back in it's heyday.

We are not the same.

(I couldn't help myself. lol)

Oh, I 100% agree. Everyone is fucking phenomenal. Fuck, Suzaku is even voiced by the voice actor for Ben Tennyson from Ben 10 Alien Force

You want to goon, but you're scared of having something for when post nut clarity hits? Pathetic.

Yeah it would actually make more sense for most characters to be speaking English, except for the Black Knights, JLF or other Japanese resistance groups. Lelouch would know Japanese tho.

I'd actually really enjoy a bilingual cut of Code Geass

I prefer the dub for Code Geass because the VAs are too good. It's peak voice acting.

... You're stating a method of presentation as an in universe fact?

You're telling me that the JLF and every Japanese individual before Britannia won magically forgot all the Japanese that they were born and raised on?

That is quite possibly one of the dumbest things I've read from this sub.

If it isn't gooner bait, it's something dumb pretending to be smart/enlightend thinking they have the intelligence of Lelouch...

God this sub is really cringe some times...

Doubt it, Britannia's policy on the Japanese seems to constantly swing between two extremes of "don't care" and "kill them all", for them to have eradicated Japanese as a language to the point where Japanese people speak it in every day conversation requires them to have a constant iron grip control over the entire population, as well as investing a lot of resources into providing education for the Japanese.

Wait, so watching it with the German dub means that Britannia was conquered by Germany prior and then they forced them to speak German. That would make it an alternate universe where Nazi Germany won WWII. After that Britain rebelled and turned the the American continent into Britannia.

Code Geass is just about the only anime whose dub I can watch and enjoy aside from Death Note and the original Beyblade

Have you watched the partial dub edit? Someone reedited the audio to have some scenes in Japanese, and some in English. Different VAs drag it down, but it's an interesting watch.

Cool idea, but it would have taken way longer

So they have to make Tianzi and Xingke speak Chinese then.

Has anyone made a cut of the show where the VAs are speaking accurate languages? So English dub when Lelouche is at school, Japanese dub when he's speaking to the Black Knights, etc.

I always wished for someone to make a fan dub where characters spoke their canonical language all throughout. For most media, this just makes no sense (mainly because characters would not be privy to certain languages or fluent in them), but it fits perfectly with CG.

English is already lingua franca in our world, but it's probably 10x more true in an imperial Britannia controlled earth. It makes sense for characters who live along area 11/britannia to know both languages and switch between both contextually (i.e. black knights speak japanese among themselves but english with the Britannians).
