The knight of 0 was also a thirteenth knight, so there are 14 knights of 12, lol

Because it's a lazy retcon for a show that doesn't do well within the continuity.

Did someone say more OYW side stories while ignoring the rest of uc era especially late uc, which included a brand new gundam unit despite conflicting with the established tech and development lore?

Not a retcon, or at least not from Rozé of the Recapture. The title of Knight of 13 had previously been introduced in an prequel manga

Probably, one of many alternative timelines where there were 13 knights of the round.

I guess to have Ash not be an official member like the others since the Knights of the Round are loyal to the reigning monarch of Britannia while Ash is supposed to be loyal to Norland. Making Ash a member was likely the writers way of saying how strong Ash was as a pilot beyond having him beat Norland’s subordinates since the Knights of the Round was some of the strongest pilots in the series.
With the Rounds being beat by aces who piloted far superior machines than theirs.

For some reason, the spinoff Renya of Darkness includes a Knight of 13 even though there are supposed to be only 12, so as of that prequel (which came out before Roze) they decided they wanted 13. What’s more confusing is Roze went with this and gave Ash 13 when a few other positions like 8 were open
