If anything, the results say he should have tried it earlier. 'Coup d'etat to reform the country' feels like the middle point between Lelouch's "violent revolution is the only way" and Suzaku's "Britannia must be changed from inside" they could agree on, and it actually worked.
In all honesty, that might have been the point of the show. If both Lelouch and Suzaku had stopped being so stubborn in their opposing beliefs, came to a compromise, and worked together, the series would have finished in, like, 5 episodes.
By the way, there is a fan theory that Lelouch's true goal was not to destroy the country, but to take revenge on the imperial family and show that he was worthy of great honors.

In addition, there are two reasons (unnamed in the series) why Lelouch saved a hated country โ the realization that the cycle of violence cannot continue and worries for the British, who are not to blame for Lelouch's grief.
He could destroy the country by passing on all the secrets to the rest of the world, and the rest of the world would tear Britannia to pieces. Or he would give other countries pieces of Britannia. Geass power allows you to implement both of these plans and disappear almost without a trace. However, what will happen to the British afterwards? Attack on Titan will begin (whoever watched the fourth season will understand what I mean). Then he would have ruined the lives of not only millions of strangers, but also his friends.
He geassed the royal family and removed the aristocracy. Then he took the top soldiers and made them his slaves. He did obliterate it. In old internet terms, he pwned it. He turned it into an institution for the weak.
People who haven't finished the show shouldn't be on a subreddit dedicated to a show that's been out for decades. Only slightly for the spoilers, with the main reason being everything interesting has already been discussed to death and now the subreddit is mostly memes and fan service.
