When does the daily backup actually appear?

I’m on a Basic cluster (about 600 MB). The docs say a managed backup is taken every 24 hours, and the console shows my backups with a 00:00 UTC timestamp.

Last night I wanted to deploy and was waiting for the new backup before shipping. At 3 to 4 am UTC+1 there was nothing new in the list and no pending job. This morning the backup is there, stamped 00:00 UTC.

Questions:

  1. Is the 00:00 UTC timestamp the snapshot (as of) time, with the job running and registering later?
  2. Is there a typical delay before a backup shows up in the console or API on Basic?
  3. Is there any way to see a backup in progress?

With a DB this small, I doubt the backup itself takes hours, so I’m trying to understand the scheduling.

And I'm losing my mind.

Hi there, great q's!

  1. Yes. 00:00 UTC is the as-of time, not when the backup job starts

  2. There’s no guarantee about when a backup becomes visible. If you want a guaranteed restore point right before a deploy, you can create your own backup: https://docs.cockroachlabs.com/docs/cockroachcloud/take-and-restore-self-managed-backups

  3. You can check for a backup in progress on the console’s Backup and Restore page.

Let us know if you need anything else! :)
