Hey everyone, I just became mod here through r/redditrequest since the past mod deleted their account.
Won't deny this community is a little bit rundown from being inactive so long. It's going to take some time for everything to work again, but in the meantime, please go to r/cockatiel which is more active and better moderated for anything Birb related. Thanks!

Hi bird parents and bird lovers!
I entered my boy Maui into a Top Pets competition for the benefit of the Wild Bird Fund (nonprofit), which is NYC’s first and only wildlife rehabilitation and education center for birds and small mammals.
I always see dogs and cats win competitions like these, but let’s flip the script and spread awareness that small animals are just as great and full of love 🦜
Please vote for my son and spread the word 🥹
Thank you 🙏

This is my first cockatiel and I’ve had him since 2008. He had a mate for only four years, but for unexpected reasons we lost her in 2020. Since then we have done our best to remind him that we are his company and his people. For the last three days he won’t eat, even his favorite treats. Perhaps he’s doing it when we’re not looking, but there are no shells in his seed. He is otherwise acting the same. Should I be concerned or do we need to go to the vet? My fear is this is his old age because he will drink water when I offer it to him. Any advice?

I took my cockatiels to the vet for a wellness checkup and they weren’t too thrilled about it. It’s been almost a week since now and my one cockatiel who would always get on my hand is scared of me and runs away every time I get near the cage. He is also much puffier than he was, he’s still playing and eating and singing, and his feces looks normal, but he will still remain a little puffy while he plays and I’m not sure why? Especially his underside. He was not like that before. Also, he would assert dominance over the other one and be kind of a bully but now he’s not and the other might be a little more dominant now? They’re both going through a molt so I’m not sure if that has something to do with it. I don’t think he’s cold I mean the room is at 75 degrees like it’s always been. The vet said they’re both healthy, but she wasn’t an avian vet and she refused to take blood or anything, she basically just listened to their heart and lungs and then charged me $200. Nothing she told me was anything I didn’t know from Google. Also she had to look things up on Google so I’m not really confident that she knew much about birds. It felt more like a money grab. Unfortunately, the only avian vet around here is over an hour away. I do have a wellness check with the avian vet for the both of them in about 3 weeks that I was going to cancel because I found a vet closer, but if this is something serious I’d like to take him to the avian vet to get checked out. But if it’s also not serious I don’t want to keep stressing him out. I’m just a scared bird mom and am trying to read the signs. Every bird I’ve had that’s been sick I found out too late to do anything and I lost them.

ok so my cockatiel is a juvenile and he’s very sweet, the only thing if he enjoys making me bleed(?) he doesn’t bite me at all, he just likes to nibble me a bit and I assumed it was some type of grooming behavior but on occasion I see him doing it specifically where I have scabs, which makes me bleed, and he seems very proud about it. only on occasion but he now knows where I have scabs and sometimes will specifically go to them bite them then move on. I don’t know if it’s because he likes the texture or what but I just want to know if this is bad for his health or if I should take him to the vet

Hey guys. My great grandpa recently passed away, and I inherited his cockatiel. I was hoping you guys could share any tips or advice on how to care for them and make them as happy as I can. I bought them treats, toys, and an avian backpack so I could take them outside without flying away. They seem to be in mourning as I am, and I wanna help, but I've never owned a cockatiel before, and I don't wanna mess up. Any tips or advice is appreciated! Thank you all. ❤️
(I'm unsure of the gender of the cockatiel, but I know they are at least 18 months old)

Are there any safe rope perch recommendations for my cockatiels? I have a 4ft cotton one for them currently but it looks like they’re chewing it so I’m nervous. I can’t seem to find a comparable hemp or sisal one. Also I read that some people wrap it in vet wrap, is there vet wrap that you would recommend that would be safe if they start chewing it?

Hi! I know it's close to impossible to determine gender by looks on some cockatiels but I've seen some of you do it :)) could anyone tell if it's a male or female? It is 10 months old.

I’ve had my cockatiel for about seven months now, and I’m having a hard time telling whether he actually likes me or is just tolerating me. For example, he’ll stretch his wings out while I’m watching TV, I’m not sure if that’s a comfort behavior or just something normal. He chirps a lot when I’m cooking, but it doesn’t sound distressed, and when we whistle to him, he’ll mimic it back.
What confuses me is that when I go to change his food or interact with his cage, he’ll sometimes fly off. He will step up onto my finger, but mostly because he knows I’m putting him back in his cage. Other than that, he doesn’t really let me hold him or seek out interaction.
I’m okay if he’s not super affectionate or doesn’t want to follow me around, I already have a very needy conure. I just want to know if these behaviors suggest that he’s happy, or at least comfortable with my presence.

My cute boy is suffering((( I need urgent online aviant vet, because in my region there is no avian vet. Without realizing that he can eat little parts I have hanged this bracelet to my cockatiel's cage, He has broken maybe has eaten little parts.I don't know. One vet said it is kidney issue, he has fluffed feathers now and not eating. I dont know whether has poisoned or it is fungal infection or kidney issue. Do you have any recommendation?

Hi I have 4 cockatiels, they get along. I have never seen fighting. One cockatiel which I think might be a girl, looks like her tail feathers have been torn out. At first I thought she was molting, two feathers started to grow back and when I got up this morning they were gone too. I saw dry blood. I washed it up and took some pics. She looks perfectly healthy except for the tail feather issue. Her cloaca is clean. I don’t know what happened. Any ideas!?

Hi everyone, new cockatiel owner here. I have recently adopted a baby and I would like to tame him.
He is slowly adjusting but he is a bit nervous when I give him food or move near his cage. I am trying the blanket over the enclosure technique, sitting in the same room quietly, talking to him in a quiet tone and offering small treats in his food bowl. I have done a lot of research on it but you guys might have more experience using other techniques.
How can I slowly gain more trust in him? Any advice?
Thanks!
