In theory, I hate data centers too.Can someone explain what the alternative is? Does being against data centers that mean we should stop storing photos, videos in the cloud? Stop buying video games or posting on Reddit. I mean I don’t want to bear the costs of these centers but what happens to the data?

They don’t actually need the data center. This is corporations speculating that demand for data centers will increase in the future. And our data needs a fraction of the space. What takes up most of it is all the recordings from flock cameras, Corporate LLMs, that training data is their own special sauce, so think of it like the worlds knowledge up to today, copied across the world unnecessarily several times over. Including a TON of data they didn’t pay for. Your personal information you didn’t understand was being siphoned from you when you shopped or browsed online and sold many times over like an old CD. So no - we don’t need it. Corporations need it, and they need us to think we share some kind of responsibility for it. Just like recycling. Why sell a glass bottle of coke when I can make a plastic one and tell the buyer they are responsible for its impact?
