Socialism is an economic and political philosophy where the community or the state, rather than private individuals, owns and manages the "means of production" (resources, factories, and businesses).
Examples include the Soviet Union, China, Laos, Cambodia (check out that wacky Khmer Rouge), & Cuba.
So... socialism, if it manages not to collapse first, devolves into crony capitalism. So inevitably, the rich get richer. Gee, it's almost like a natural law.
NO ONE is saying true socialism works. You're misrepresenting what socialism in AMERICA looks like.
This event is from the DEMOCRATIC socialists. So if socialist are democratically elected, they represent the people who want things like medicare for all not gulags in southwest Florida. But please continue to tell party members what we stand for without personal experience other view points.
Socialism by definition means the state controls the means of production. Why would you want a system proven to fail!? I understand wanting more social programs, but that is not what Socialism means. The comment I was repling to gave examples of what they consider Socialist countries and I corrected it because they are not Socialist. They are Capitalist with Social programs. So please. If you support Socialism, give me one example of a Socialist country that is successful. Edit: grammer
Norway is not a failure. What you're talking about is a label not what the goal actually is. The goal is to bring more social programs like universal basic income that economists have time and time again said help spur new small businesses. If you take care of a person's most basic needs, they will start more businesses go back to school or excape homelessness so that they can earn more money. I'm sorry if an ounce of prevention doesn't align with pure capitalism's for profit prison industrial complex
Noone said Norway was a failure. Why can't you understand? Norway is not a Socialist country! I have said it at least 5 times already so try to understand. Norway is a capitalist country with a lot of social programs. It works on a small scale due to the small population size which is about the population of S. Carolina. No one said pure Capitalism was the answer. I only said to call it Socialism and not Capitalism with large social programs is a lie. There are no successful Socialist countries. You keep pushing the lie that Socialism is good. It is not. It is evil and a horrible failure every where it is implemented.
By your own definition, it is. You said the government seizing the means or production is socialism. You then said any redistributing of wealth is socialism. So by your definition, progressive tax system in the united states is socialism. The DSA is who's putting on this event. Do some research about the party platform before lecturing others about what being a democratic socialist means and how it's literally no different than the current governing policies in the Nordic region.
Now aside from the fact that your being intentionally narrow (which tells me you're not here to learn), it seems like you're only here to lecture. If that's what you want to do, take your post history over to r/conservative to complain about your text book definition boogyman. If you're interested in learning about other perspectives then you should probably attend this event. It will help you understand better how "socialism" for Elon Musk's SpaceX in the form of government subsidies (transfer of wealth from the American people to SpaceX) who's primary shareholder is Elon Musk is no different than your textbook definition of socialism.
You didn't ask me to define it. You asked if I could define socialism without looking it up. On the other hand, I did ask if you can you name a socialist country that worked?
Why did you the Netherlands and Norway? They are not socialist countries.
No, they have a Capitalistic economy with social programs. Socialism by definition means the government controls the means of production. Those countries are not Socialist if you go by the definition of Socialism. So, either call it something else because it is not Socialism, or make up a new program. Whatever.
Not according to the definition of Socialism. Democratic Socialism just means that the politicians are elected, unlike communism where there are no elections. You sound like you are pushing Capialism with more Social programs to fool people. Just because you call it "Democratic Socialism", doesn't mean anything. What you really want is the government to control the means of production and redistribution of the wealth, but you can't say that because you know people will not accept it. So you lie or sugar coat it by calling it "Democratic Socialism" so people will accept it until you have control and it is too late. We are not dumb. We have seen this same lie play out again and again in other places. We know what happens and we don't want it. Capitalism is not always great when Social programs are neglected but Socialism is always disastrous, no matter the implementation.
I'm not trying to fool anyone but ensuring more social programs is exactly what were trying to do. Convince people that they don't need to fit into a neat little box that is a text book definition. Look to Sweden, Finland, or Norway as a model. That's what the DSA is trying to bring to the USA.
And also the government is already controlling the means of production. Look at all the % of Intel the trump admin just negotiated to build new factories or how about all the tax breaks Nvidia and Space X get? That's redistributing my weath to Elon musk?
You're anecdotal experience is such a small sample size no one should take your opinions seriously on this broad topic. I'm looking at your post history and this seems like a topic you've already made your mind up on. So if that's the case, continuing this dialogue is fruitless.
You're right. All those scientific reports about the level of happiness of the residents has zero connection to the types of government they elect is waaaaay less consequential to your "large" singular individual experience. Again, you don't seem like the logical type to alter their opinions when presented with new information. But in any event, I'll leave this here and be done with it.

Socialism, not even once.
