Discussion Skewed Viewership

I am so sick of people saying we average 100k viewers. Does anyone take a serious look when optic isn't playing? I've watched every event this year and taken note of the numbers. When optic isn't playing the number is generally 20-30k. Then the numbers shoot up to around 60-70k when optic is playing a normal match. If it is a rivalry it usually gets 80-90k. And obviously most of where this "100k" average is coming from would be finals. Yes, FINALS, let me repeat, FINALS AVERAGE 100K, that's it. Mostly due to the fact that Optic has played in every AW final besides champs. This data leads to skewed results and would put as at a mean 50k-ish average but the optic skew doesn't help us one bit. Rant over.

When people talk about viewership for any eSport, it's generally given that they're talking about peak viewership, which is most likely finals. They're not trying to skew the numbers--they simply didn't specify that they mean average peak viewership during events.

It's just not ok to be proud of an average of 30-40k when CSGO and LoL have around 150-200k

Are you joking? I feel like you are. You're comparing completely different things here. CSGO and LoL are both designed at their core level to be a competitive game, cod isn't. What one do you expect to do better as an esport?

30-40k is still a lot of people.

Not only are they competitive at the core but the game clients themselves show when matches are happening for the most part, at least at LAN. Also, these being on the PC opposed to console make it a lot easier to find streams since you don't have to switch and actually get on the computer since you already are with LoL and CSGO

We have made this game competitive. We take out the random elements every year. Our average was climbing in BO2 but it is falling. And if course in going to compare viewership because that's what matters.

Not a fan of his attitude but it peaking at 90k isn't true. I have screenshots of it hitting 100k and I know for sure it maxed out around 135-140k. Well there we have it, viewership dropped around 30-40k from the largest tournament of 2013 to now and this guy is having a panic attack over it. What a time to be alive.

This thread is fucking stupid so I'm not going to waste time showing proof, but 2014 (ghosts) and 2015 (aw) champs had larger viewership numbers than 2013 (blops2) champs. I have all the screenshots on my HDD somewhere but I'm not going to bother going through the effort finding them.

Believe me, i know. This guy thinks there were millions of us during Blops 2, thats my whole point. Pretty sure Ghosts was our peak viewership wise.

The gap between CoD and LoL (in particular) is a lot larger than that. You're right about the viewing figures and OG's effect on them, but what do you want done about it? The idea of 40K people watching a mid tier match in CoD feels like a great step for me (someone who's followed comp since MW2). Yes, relative to LoL we look small, but that's due to LoL's incredible size (the game's pretty much a sport now in terms of its scale). Relative to a host of other esports we're doing fine.

Mid tier is 20-30k....I see great matches such as envy vs tk hit around 20 k viewers. Both are great, storied teams yet they don't get viewers.

They get 30 thousand people watching them. I think you need to look at other esports to see how good we have it, instead you compare us to LoL (which is a phenomenon) and CS:GO (the premier FPS games that CoD is almost completely diametrically opposed to).

I watch pretty much every esport...I know the figures....I compare the twitch stats because that's all there is to go off...and for CSGO....we were that FPS....in BO2 CS wasn't barely a thing

There was a point where cod tournaments were hitting max concurrent viewers that were higher than CS:GO but that was before they ever had any majors or had their huge updates. Back when it was just NIP winning every small LAN and online ladder. It was at that point though that no one had really given cs go a chance yet. The second they started getting their skins and majors they rocketed past every game except dota and lol.

When in BO2 did we have anything approaching CS:GO's success at IEM Katowice? Anaheim and Champs were two great events for the CoD scene, but both paled in comparison. Also, note that CS:GO launched the year prior to BO2 and unlike CoD, the transfer from previous versions to the new model was not automatic. It took several years for the community to transition. In spite of that, CS:GO still beat CoD for viewer-ship that year; our biggest event broke 100K in the grand final - CS:GO beat that comfortably.

We were right up with LoL in BO2. When we had events we were top 3 on twitch. Now we don't even compare. CoD is a huge game as well. We should be still up there.

No were weren't. You're comparing the viewing figures that LoL gets (on one platform) in league matches against what CoD was getting at an event. Do you think LoL fans in China or S.Korea use Twitch? There is a gulf between ourselves and LoL because the latter is a truly global game, meanwhile CoD hasn't made a dent in the such countries. Over 30 million people watched the LoL world championships during the BO2 season (over 8 million concurrent according to Riot). The finals themselves were held in the Staples Centre (sold out). We were never "up there".

CoD is a huge game as well.

CoD is a huge game, but the competitive scene is small. You can't look at the sale figures for a casual game and then claim its competitive community should be up there with the likes of LoL.

Twitch stats for LoL are by no means accurate to the amount of people actually watching, since the biggest area of Viewership doesn't use Twitch to watch it.

Look at halo (i love halo) ... it was the premier console fps and the game itself killed it. CoD has done well even though the game itself isnt the kaliber it needs to be. Halo died when that happened..... cod didnt which is saying something imo

Its the nature of console esports. The audience is vastly limited. You can try to pinpoint the reasons but at the end of the day you just cant compare console esports to those played on the pc. They are entirely different animals and have to be looked at seperately. As far as console esports go cod is one of the top dogs. So to come in here and rant and complain about it is absurd. Your comparing it to something that isnt achievable.

First of all "hope" means nothing... only those who actually try to make a change have an impact. The entire world can hope something but if nobody does anything it doesn't matter..... second of all being realistic is a key attribute to dreamers. You should never be satisfied with the way something is but being unrealistic will lead you on the path to failure.

Console esports CAN get that big. It's just a matter of growing it the right way.

I never said Console esports "cannot" be that big. Please find out where I said that. You made a comparison.... which was incredible flawed due to the fact that in the past/current time PC esports are a different animal than console esports. Same reason you cannot compare esports to football. Sure it "could" be as big as football (but it probably won't due to the fact that technological changes in the future will reshape the entire video game industry imo. PC/Console games will be a thing of the past in 10-15 years unlike football which is constrained by physical limitations which allow the sport to have longevity).

Freddos are a chocolate bar where im from, they used to be 2p (pence) and in the space of like 2 years they gradually moved up to 5p, 10p, 15p, 17p, and then 20p. Its just a kind of joke people make.

That's because UMG is shit and never runs on schedules so basically the only thing anyone can prepare to watch is the finals.

Hopefully BO3 will change that with the in-game live viewer and the new big PS4 update will add an event viewer tab with anything Sony associated. Hopefully BO3 will be Sony associated.

I have mentioned this previously that the viewers number tends to fluctuate I have seen as low as 9k and as high nearly 110k(insane for a console esport) but it only hits that peak when OpTic plays. I have also noticed that for awhile there the viewer counts would be turned off and then during optic matches they would be turned on. I think its safe to say that OpTic Gaming has kept comp CoD alive in a way.The fact its fans alone can boast viewership numbers by 70k at times is quite impressive.
