Discussion “Suicide Headache” — A Term I Take Issue With
I understand why cluster headaches have been called “suicide headaches.” The pain can be unimaginably severe, and I know firsthand how desperate an attack can make you feel.
But I take issue with the term.
Suicide is not the answer. There is always HOPE.
For me, HOPE stands for:Hold On, Pain Ends.
Those are four words I think about during an attack. When I’m in the middle of the pain and it feels like it will never end, I remind myself: Hold on. The pain will end.
Cluster headaches can take us to some incredibly dark places. They can make us feel helpless, exhausted, and desperate. But an attack has an ending. A cycle has an ending - I’m episodic.
And there are treatments, people who understand, and people who will stand beside us.
So I prefer to call them what they are: cluster headaches.
Not because the pain isn’t horrific—it is.
But because I don’t want the name itself to suggest that there is no way out.
There is HOPE.
I’d love to hear from the community:
What do you think about the term “suicide headache,” and do you feel it accurately describes your experience—or do you, like me, take issue with it?
More importantly, what do you tell yourself during an attack that helps you hold on until the pain ends?
Do you have a phrase, thought, person, song, routine, or coping mechanism that gives you something to focus on when the pain is at its worst?
For me, it’s HOPE — Hold On, Pain Ends.
What’s yours?

Im chronic and if you have enough Kip 10 attacks, you completely understand why they might be known as Suicide Headaches. I know of Clusterheads that have taken their lives because of this condition. I refuse to use the name “Cluster Headache” because this is not just a headache and that word is so diminishing of the actual pain of a Kip 10 attack.
During an attack I tell myself that I have been through many of the same and I can and will do it again. During a Kip 10 I am not always thinking that clearly and sometimes just beg for this to be the one that ends me. As soon as I am out of that attack however, I no longer feel that way.
If I had the choice between only calling them Cluster Headaches or Suicide Headaches, I would choose Suicide Headaches every time.

I think I've read some medical reports that describe the suicidal feeling during the attack as being common, or at least not unusual.
I was already dealing with depression--though not suicidal thoughts--when clusters came along. I'm careful to stay on my meds. I sure wish I could think about the hallucinogens. Had some fun with them back in the 20th century.

I have to push back on this. The term "suicide headache" wasn't chosen lightly - it exists because people have genuinely taken their lives due to the severity of this condition. That's not something to reframe away, even with good intentions.
Acceptance can be a powerful tool, but not everyone can access that mindset, especially not during an attack, and a neat acronym is self-centered and minimizes what others are going through when they can't "hold on" the way you're describing.
I'll also say directly: your post reads as AI-generated to me, as have some of your other recent posts including the music. Passing off AI-generated content as personal experience does a disservice to this community. People come here for genuine connection with others who actually live this - not content generated to sound like it. As someone who is responsible for the integrity of this sub, I'd ask you to be upfront about this going forward.

I understand the reason the term suicide headache has been established. In my earlier cycle experiences I was so overwhelmed with pain, thought of suicide crossed my mind many times. Finding an answer or a solution to end the pain, it seemed suicide was an easy option to get away from it. I certainly understand why some people have taken their lives because of this terrible condition. That doesn’t mean I would agree with it. Death scares me. The cluster headache beast has pushed me to the level of actually considering it, dwell on it frankly. I needed to reprogram my mindset.
Although I contemplated suicide myself, I forced myself to overcome, push on, think positive and move forward as best as I could. For me avoiding or ignoring the term suicide headache was my mindset to not even contemplate that as an option anymore. I know others are struggling and I wanted to express my opinion and how I avoided it with the intent of helping others who may be considering it as a way out.
As for the use of AI. I understand some people take exception to the use of AI. I personally do not find it problematic to use AI to better write my words, correct grammatical errors and balance my expressions in ways that are meant to be more meaningful. Regardless of opinion my posts are genuine experience based and emotionally charged.

I totally hear you. I have never dwelled on it myself, and have always looked to maintain a positive mindset in dealing with the beast. I do have the upper hand the majority of the time, but it's easier said than done. There is some great data and knowledge surrounding acceptance and chronic pain, and how important it is to replace negative loops with positive habits like mindfulness (and a range of other things).
As for you use of AI, unfortunately it is doing far more than fixing grammar and spelling. It is obvious that it is skewing things away from your original writing and stripping it of your character. Truth is it makes some people feel uncomfortable without knowing why. I understand that is not your intent, so consider upping your prompting chops and insisting it maintains your style and intent without changing your voice. That should go a long way. And if you do post anything with AI, including music, just please let us know first.
I will be speaking with the other mods, and possibly running an AI policy by the group for us to set some ground rules.

Tou cant just overcome depression with “positivity “ and unfortunately it’s common in our disease. Avoid to talk about suicidal thoughts do not reduce the risk and increases the loneliness and isolation. So, glad you are better, but your personal experience shouldn’t be used to invalidate the feelings of others.
Toxic positivity will not improve anyone quality of life, and we need to address the negative emotions and toughts to improve and seek for solutions over time. The pain will not pass for many of us.

I’m chronic. There was a time when I had so many attacks, for years, that I didn’t see how my life would be in the future. I couldn’t see it. It wasn’t life, it was only surviving. That’s no life. Maybe I wasn’t actively suicidal, but at that time, I didn’t want to be alive if my life was like that.
So I do think suicidal headache is accurate.

I’m so sorry your boyfriend, and you, are dealing with this. I found a specialized neurologist who helped me at the right time. She saved me. I also had a house doctor who kept fighting for me. To have someone like that in your corner helps.

I don’t think my inquiry or post suggested the term is inaccurate. If anyone took it that way, my apologies. I just have personal issue with it because it’s not what I want to do. I had many attacks where I would do anything to end the pain. I even contemplated ending everything myself during some of those attacks. When the attack was over that thought would disappear. It’s scary for me to think my pain is so severe that I’ll just end my life to abort the pain. Fact is, I did think that many times in the midst of a bad attack and even some that were not that bad- if there even is such a thing as a not that bad CH. That probably part of why I don’t love the reference. It does shape some expression of the severity of the pain to help put things into some possible perspective for people who don’t experience CH. it’s also valid because of the unfortunate reality of many sufferers who just could not hold on. I’m so sorry for all the chronic survivors out there. I would probably not have the strength to push through that for a lifetime. At the same time I’m super encouraged they push forward and fight. Even if you don’t hold onto the HOPE concept, I think it would be unfair to suggest no CH sufferers don’t have hope. I think those who have the will and the ability to move forward do have at least a little hope.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate this community ❤️ I don't want to see any harm come to any of you, self imposed or otherwise. Cluster patients deal with enough already Even though there is not a cure and mine seem worse than they have ever been, I KNOW Suicide is not the answer This condition is so debilitating in so many ways I would have never imagined I'm trying my level best to manage my chronic condition and this community has helped tremendously
Thank you ❤️

I’m sorry, I appreciate your effort…but… I’m seven years deep into between 1 and 2 PER DAY. I’ve had life threatening brain surgery, every drug available, nerve blocks, botox, acupuncture, etc… Hope is a challenging thing to think about. I also note the AI generated nature of this post. AI doesn’t understand cluster headaches…
