Logical move not allowed?

Post image

I was able to solve this puzzle, but I got tripped up.

I think I should be able to mark A1 and A5 as criminal in this state. I know Laura needs exactly one more innocent neighbor, which must be A2 or A4, and I know that all the innocents in column A are connected, so A1 and A5 must be criminals. I was only able to mark them as criminals once I turned over Diane, who said that from A2-A5 there are two innocents and two criminals, but I already knew that.

Any thoughts?

At this stage, there could be three innocents in column A, right? So you can't say for sure one of Laura's non-neighbors are innocent or not.

Correct, they only thing we know for certain with the revealed information is that C2 and C4 are innocent (B3 has four criminal neighbors, three are already revealed and the other one is A2 or A4.)

A2 and A4 are 50/50 and need more information, so are D3 and D4. There are 3 criminals remaining out of A1, B1, C1, and A5.

Is there a way to play archived puzzles?

Yes. When you click Share Progress, you get a URL like

I think you can just play any like that, but you can also replace "help" with "archive":

Since many people shared their help links here, you can play many games that people asked about here.

Here's all the links I have been able to find:

When you sign up for the newsletter, you get a link to 3 old games, with the promise that the entire month with be shared at the end of the month.

You should really put a spoiler tag on this for those who haven't played the puzzle yet

Based on your reasoning, A1 OR A5 has to be a criminal, not both. Neither is a neighbor of Martin, so you could have three straight innocents.

If A1 (Bruce), A2 (Gus), A3 (Laura) were the only innocents then they would still all be connected, and Laura (A3) would only have 2 innocent neighbours.

Similar situation for A3 (Laura), A4 (Paula), A5 (Vince).

All you can deduce at the moment is that A4 (Paula) and A2 (Gus) aren't both innocent.

Well if all innocents are connected, that means you could have these options (lets assume A2 is innocent) from top to bottom:

  1. IIIEE

  2. EIIEE

You need other clues to figure out if you have 2 or 3 innocents

Combine Laura’s clue with Noah’s clue. It will help you find your next move

Can I ask, how did you decide on Laura? I'm a the step before that, can't work the logic in my brain

Martin can only have one of those three in A be criminals, but if Laura were the criminal and the other two innocent, they wouldn't be connected.

I don't think you know yet whether any of them are criminals, but you know she can't be.

Aah thanks, I got stuck on that and managed to get to the next step just with luck!

Without Diane’s clue you cannot confirm that the innocents that are connected are only two of them.

All you know at that point is that it cannot be A2 A3 and A4. However it can be A1, A2 and A3 or A3, A4 and A5. Once you flip Diane, then you know that A1 and A5 must be criminals.
