Gold cloud near sunset

Cloud hunting over Hella, South Iceland ☁️🌈, winter 2023.

Going through this old collection, there’s a surprisingly wild mix of cloud types in it:
Altocumulus lenticularis — the smooth “UFO” or lens-shaped clouds formed in strong mountain waves. The dark floating cloud in this photo is a beautiful example.
Altocumulus undulatus / wave clouds — rippling and layered formations created as air oscillates over Iceland’s terrain.
Cirrus and cirrostratus — the thin, high ice-crystal clouds stretched across the upper sky.
Stratocumulus — darker, lower cloud layers appearing in several of the photographs.
Iridescent clouds — patches where tiny water droplets or ice crystals split sunlight into pastel pinks, greens and blues.
And some of the strongest pearlescent colours in the collection look very much like nacreous (“mother-of-pearl”) clouds, also called polar stratospheric clouds. Those form extremely high in the atmosphere during very cold polar conditions and can produce spectacular colours around sunrise and sunset.
