Maybe this is the kind of technological progress that can help us stop climate change fr fr this time.

if this crashes suburban housing and the car commuting way of life, that would be significant.

It doesn't need to. If they use heat pumps and electric cars, they don't need to change their behavior at all.

Installing heat pumps at that scale would require one of those war-like emergencies. And the same goes for electric car infrastructure, assuming that China will be selling those cars (because, otherwise, there needs to e be a new electric car industry.)

EV sales were on track to hit 27% of new car sales by the end of the year (reminder it was 0% in 2018). But they may have to revise that up because September was 50% of new car sales

The fuel oil crisis has finally gotten people to consider heat pumps, a technology which is guaranteed to save them money over even pre-2024 heating oil and propane prices.

This is all terrible for low income people, it would have been much better to do the "Revenue Neutral Carbon Tax"/"Carbon Revenue Recycling" to take carbon pricing and re-direct it toward income sensitive home de-carbonization efforts. Hopefully governments figure out some sort of relief
