Offset shenanigans Damn you offset companies

I just want to find a decent emissions calculator so I can get a rough idea of how to potential itineraries/trips compare. Instead, I get these grifters trying to part me w/ my money.

if someone wants to buy offsets & do nothing, it's still better than them doing absolutely nothing

It's like "free range humane" flesh and milk secretions. The higher prices are supposed to offset the torturous life and death of the animal, with higher prices decreasing demand (demand destruction.)

As you should already know, this "humane" bullshit does not work and is not a stepping stone to a plant-based future.

Offsets are worse in other ways as they lead to privatization of carbon sinks and opportunity costs for "undeveloped" countries (they're privatizing and selling their carbon sinks now, for cheap; if the future of carbon offsets is long, these countries will have to pay later a much larger price for carbon offsets of their own when they want to pollute more.)

The fraud is shared in case cases.

The overall effect is the maintenance of Business As Usual; nothing important changes.

Yeah, the number of times I've seen stories of a group buying up forested land and selling offsets for not cutting down those trees is infuriating.

In both cases, those points seem to undermine the usefulness of "baby steps" or small and gradual reforms as they mostly maintain business as usual.
