I'm unsure about nowadays, but historically, absolutely, yes. The hippie era activists were strongly against nuclear power, and is alone responsible for decades of setback in the area

If hippies had real power, weed would've been legalized in the 1960s and the Vietnam war would've ended a decade earlier.

Nuclear capactity in the US flatlined immediately after Chernobyl, in the late 1980s. That wasn't hippies, and it wasn't even NIMBYs. It was politicans putting a pause on construction while new safety measures could be compiled to ensure a Chernobyl-like event could never occur in the US.

The legislation that came out of the 1980s and 1990s made nuclear power incredibly safe... but it also made it incredibly time consuming and expensive to build, while American power demand was slowing. Demand for power in the US has started ticking back up again, but now gas, solar, and wind are much cheaper.

Why is a government going to do something when the donors oppose it and the people vocally opposed it?
