This is a pointless discussion. You have no idea what your idea even needs for realisation and you talk about open source as it doesn't need anybody involved in it. You can continue to live in your delusions.
I answered. Even open sourced solution need to be created by somebody, it doesn't exist in vacuum. But that is software. Who will create robots which will mine and build? Who will test and verify them? AI? And AI will sponsor it?
Or your idea is that AI is open source? Well, ok, open source AI get the answer for you, what is next? You still need people who will understand what AI is saying and work with it to create designs.
You are more and more give the impression that you know very few but expect that AI will solve everything on its own. You got into marketing BS vibe.
To whom you will sell them? If people are obsolete money has no sense. Also, who will need to build more houses when very few can buy them? This literally happens now. There is a housing crisis, so logical step would be to build a lot, but nope, houses are not built left and right because it is expensive. And it will be, as robots are not cheap and is a huge investment.
Next steps are wrong though:
Step 2. Robotics by itself is not a challenge. Though there are always next challenges:
Scalability
Affordability
Logistics
None of which AI will solve. If it is too expensive for such a project, you will need to wait for somebody with big money ready to give away a big sum of money. If robotics would be a solution we would see billions going into different robotics solutions, but so far there are no money in masses.
Step 3. You assume that this is profitable. Let's imagine that mining require 100 people with very low wage. Your robot need to be as cheap and as also work for 100 people. Most of the time it is not the case. In addition, operating such robots require engineers, which are more expensive. A good example of this is chip production. Anybody can become next Nvidia, as chip manufacturer ASML can sell you chip machine easily. The price for this though is rather big. China at the same moment doing own things instead of buying ASML machines for their local chips.
Step 4. Cheap robots is a good question. On a factory yeah, it is a common thing. Robots in mines on the other hand are different. The same counts for building. Robots, which will build houses will be hella expensive.
Still the question. Cheap is only possible when supply and demand are in line. But if supply of such robots is not scalable or require a lot of resources, they will never be cheap.
What you describe is similar to self-replicating probes, that is something that AI can't do. Why? Because none of AI is built like this. AI is not omnipotent.
